Never judge a book by it’s cover. In “The Possibility of Evil” , by Shirley Jackson, Miss Strangeworth is just a little old woman who lives alone in her town on Pleasant street. She tends to her mother’s roses daily, to make sure they look their best. Miss Strangeworth’s character can be analyzed by considering what she does, what the narrator says about her, and how others interact with her.
Miss Strangeworth’s character can be analyzed by considering what she does. She is loving. She’s just a little old lady, who as far as we know , tends to her roses in her tiny old house. For example, the story states; “My grandmother planted these roses, and my mother tended to them just as i do now.” She cares for her roses dearly. She wants to keep things nice. Additionally, when the new minister came to town, “She sent over a basket of Gladioli to the church.” She’s polite in her greetings with the people in her town. She is selfish. The narrator explains to us in the book, also will, “not share her roses with anyone”. She wants them all to herself. Miss Strangeworth used to be close with the grocer, Mr. Lewis. In other words she, “now lives alone in the Strangeworth house on Pleasant street.” Mr. Lewis forgot to remind miss Strangeworth to get her tea. “It was Tuesday,” she said. The day she always purchased her tea, and he forgot to remind her. She put up quite a fuss about him forgetting. She became a bit sarcastic when it came to the ending of their conversation. Mr. Lewis works at a grocery store, he is very busy with everyone's orders and cannot remember everything, all the time. Therefore, she only seems to care about things getting done her way.
