...The response for the poem “Barbie Doll” The poem “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy seems to be a strange poem. When I first read it, I thought that is a poem for children, but the ending of the poem is weird. Then I read it again many times. I remembered that one time, when I was in my art class. We were talking about the image of the Barbie Doll and the American culture. The body shape of the Barbie Doll was changing over time to meet the standard which depends on the culture and society at the specific time. This poem is about a little girl, who is perfectly normal about physical. As many other little girls, she plays with doll, and household toys. She is healthy and intelligent. But people don’t think she’s beautiful when they look at her. Everyone only see that she has a great big nose and fat legs. She is advised to be on diet and exercise. But then she is exhausted and dies. She cuts of her nose, her legs and offers them. Lying in the casket with the fake putty nose, the nightie, and pain, people now start seeing her as a beautiful girl. The little girl is a normal girl just like the others. The “doll that did pee-pee,” the “GE stoves and irons” are common toys for little girls (Line 2-3). The toys show them how should they expect their body to be and the role of them in the society. The “wee lipsticks” is a toy which is faked from the domestic accessory of adult (4). The idea of the “wee lipsticks” seems to be guiding the little girl to pay attention to their outside...

...Abuse is a major dilemma in our civilization today. There are four key forms abuse: emotional/mental abuse, neglect, physical abuse and sexual abuse. Abuse is any ill-treatment to a person that hurts a person in any way, shape or form. This essay is going to focus at the emotional and mental aspect of abuse as I have been dealing with it for the past 23 years. Mental abuse will cause somebody to have disregard of themselves as well as physical and mental problems. But what is happening to us today? What are doctors, nurses or any heath care provider doing to help the ill? If conquered, these weaknesses will make you a stronger, more knowledgeable person that can help you live each day as they come. Living through abuse will guide you to live for what life brings you and not to let anything or anyone hold you back. A good friend once told me that you cannot believe in what you see or hear, believe in the truth. Listen and absorb, there is more being said to you then the person is telling you. Emotional abuse is any type of abuse that affects you mentally rather than physically in life. It can comprise of anything from verbal abuse and regular criticism to more clever strategies, such as bullying, exploitation, and denial to ever be pleased. Emotional abuse can take many faces. Three common examples of abusive behavior include initiating a fight, denial, and making a small something big. Even though there is no conventional description for emotional abuse, emotional abuse...

...Chris Crutcher uses figurative language in the book “Whale Talk” to make the theme of the story noticeable. The theme of the book is pretty simple. Abuse can affect people, inside and outside. First and foremost, abuse can affect you inside and out based on a few characters in the book. The first character has been abused physically and mentally. The character is named Andy Mott. He was abused physically because he had effects of being hurt. On page 165 in the book, “Man, if you want to pass up purgatory and go straight to hell… Soon as my mom would take off to work, he’d tie up my leg to the pipe under the kitchen sink, give me a big ol’ aluminium bowl to pee in, and take off with his buddies…” That means that he had been abused to the...

...world as cutting weight. Weight classes in wrestling were implemented in order to insure the optimal amount of fairness for each wrestler before they step out onto the mat. I believe that weight classes are positive to the sport but also negative. Positive in the fact that you don’t have a kid who weighs 103 wrestling someone who is 185, that just wouldn’t make sense. It makes it so everyone that goes out there are roughly the same weight so size doesn’t play a roll. But, this causes many issues as well. I know from experience the side effects of cutting weight. You feel weak, tired, and hungry; you get cotton mouth, and extremely aggravated over little things, everything pisses you off, it’s just an awful mood to be in. Cutting weight often is misconstrued and everyone believes that you just starve yourself to make weight. In some occasions this is true, but that is the wrong way to do it. There is a right way to cut weight and a wrong way. The wrong way is what everyone thinks every wrestler does. The wrong way to cut weight is starving yourself for days, not drinking anything, and working out with a rubber suit. Many wrestlers including myself have resorted to these methods as a way to easily lose mass amounts of weight in a short period of time. I’ve been wrestling my whole life; I started when I was...

...A night at the University by, Noor Ashiqin bt Jusoff Albar Qurratu’aini bt Noorzam Khoo Chui Choo Effarizan Hassan Prologue: The sudden sounds of breaking twigs on the ground made the three friends shiver in fear. It has never crossed their minds that they would end up getting stuck alone in their University at that time of hour. Ironically, they used to stay in the abandoned hostel not far away from where they are and be roaming the grounds as though they lived the land for generations long. “Of all days” Muffy puffed “your car just HAD to break down today.” The loudest of the group complained. The chatterbox felt a jolt to her heart when she saw a moving figure walking straight down their direction. A human like figure, darkened by the night, walked slowly and swayed step by step closer to them. “Muffy…,” Ezan trembled in the small voice, tugging Muffy’s shirt signalling her to be cautious. “Guys, maybe we should turn back,” Que said alarmingly at the sight of the silhouette. The three friends stopped in their steps, allowing the cold damp night air to sweep across their cheeks. Their hearts pounded like the stomping of horse hooves during a race. Their fingers cold as ice and faces white as sheet making neither of them bolder than the other. “ARE YOU ALSO LOST?!” Muffy exclaimed. Que and Ezan jumped at the sound of her shout. “Muffy! Are you insane?” Que said alarmed. “You can’t just say anything to it!” Ezan said terrified. “You will...

...I Was a Warehouse Wage Slave Read the story that was nominated for a 2013 National Magazine Award. By Mac McClelland | Mon Feb. 27, 2012 7:00 AM EST "Don't take anything that happens to you there personally," the woman at the local chamber of commerce says when I tell her that tomorrow I start working at "Amalgamated Product Giant Shipping Worldwide Inc." She winks at me. I stare at her for a second. "What?" I ask. "Why, is somebody going to be mean to me [1] or something?" She smiles. "Oh, yeah." This town somewhere west of the Mississippi is not big; everyone knows someone or is someone who's worked for Amalgamated. "But look at it from their perspective. They need you to work as fast as possible to push out as much as they can as fast as they can. So they're gonna give you goals, and then you know what? If you make those goals, they're gonna increase the goals. But they'll be yelling at you all the time. It's like the military. They have to break you down so they can turn you into what they want you to be. So they're going to tell you, 'You're not good enough, you're not good enough, you're not good enough,' to make you work harder. Don't say, 'This is the best I can do.' Say, 'I'll try,' even if you know you can't do it. Because if you say, 'This is the best I can do,' they'll let you go. They hire and fire constantly, every day. You'll see people dropping all around you. But don't take it personally and break down or start crying when they yell at you." Several months prior...

...When America was first discovered, it was very much an unsettled land. There was no centralized government, no real established culture, and no official identity. Thus, it became the perfect place for people who were looking to start over. Many of the early settlers were younger brothers who hoped to claim the land that they could not inherit, religious pilgrims who hoped to be able to practice their beliefs, and floundering businessmen who hoped to create a fortune in a new land. What they all had in common was the idea that they could become something better, that in this empty land they could carve their lives into some fantastic image in their minds. Eventually, the ability to do big things in this country warped into the expectation to do something big with one’s opportunity in America. (And by “do something big”, it is meant that it is something big on societal terms.) This is the ideal that eventually became an important part of American culture. It resulted in entire generations growing up learning to measure their lives as the distance from where they were to some far off point in the horizon where they felt they should be. The late twentieth century showed the consequences of this kind of thinking. Due to a period of rapid technological and social change, America underwent a massive transformation in lifestyle. Thus, much of what had been built became obsolete, and the generation that spent their lives trying to become something suddenly found their entire life’s...

...Drug Testing – An Introduction Despite recent and strong empirical evidence proving employment-based drug screenings do not increase productivity – and in many cases may even adversely affect productivity – more and more employers continue to require a clean drug screening for consideration of employment. If you are applying for a job, the chances are good that you will need to take a drug test. While a few industries are still considered “safe” from drug testing (namely, restaurant and hospitality), this is by no means an industry standard. Larger offices are particularly diligent in their drug testing efforts. If your prospective employer has around 100 employees or has government or private financial backing, you can bet your bottom dollar that you will be tested; if not for pre-employment, then at some point during your tenure with that company. To simplify things, your prospective employer is only testing for illegal drugs during a drug screening. They cannot, by law, test for pregnancy or medical conditions during a drug test. Thankfully, prospective employers cannot run your urine, hair, saliva or blood and see what substances or activities in which you have engaged over the last ten years. Such actions are not only illegal – they are currently impossible. In this Guide, you will learn how long the chemical traces, or metabolites, stay in your system (for example, marijuana can stay in your blood stream for as long as two months!). The Department of Defense requires...

...answer. You can breathe easy on that one. It’s just not like that. This is English and we leave those kinds of ‘right answers’ to the mathematicians and scientists. An English essay is not an ‘answer’ in that way at all, rather, it’s an informed opinion; but, like all opinions, it’ll require explanation, argument and support. It requires you to argue your case. What’s the first thing you do when you set about starting an essay? Many people start by searching through the text on which their essay is based in the hope of finding suitable quotations to help ‘answer’ the essay question. Well, there’s no getting away from this basic process, but there are ways to make it altogether more efficient, useful and most importantly, more likely to earn a higher grade. More on this later. The Argument Essay The secret of a good essay? Write it as an argument for what you believe! What is there to argue about? Plenty! You’ll be arguing to support your point of view on the essay question - one that you’ve boldly stated in the opening lines of the essay! “This is what I believe and I’m going to show you why I believe it..!” This is a view you’ll have developed after careful reflection and consideration on what the essay question or title asks or states. The trick is to be able to condense this view down into a brief and succinct statement. This becomes what is called your thesis statement....

The cold breeze can be felt almost instantly in this blur night, Rachel sign and her breath can be visibly seen, and she shivers and hugs herself. She looks up at the 70 feet building. It all started when they all agreed to spend their vacation in Las Vegas, the place for relaxation, Entertainment and Gambling, and all of it happened when they luckily won 10 tickets at some lottery. It was just by luck that Puck clumsily tripped and disturbed, its’ momentum and got the jackpot, Kurt and Rachel squeal with all their might leaving everyone around them deaf. Each one of them went and packed their things and saying their goodbyes to their parents and went off. The ride to the airport was Hell, Santana always wanted to stop at every store they come into, Brittany occasionally wants to go at detours, Sam won’t stop talking about X-Men and the Avengers ,Finn is snoring really loudly and Jesse was disturbingly looking at the mirror, like his worshiping his face and was like trying to propose to himself the only normal there was Rachel, sitting quietly with Ear buds in her ear, Blaine and Kurt talking to each other, Tina doing something on her computer and lastly Puck who was trying to ignore his Friends weird antics, when they arrive...

...Millan Engl-1302 VF1-Composition 2 - Rhetoric 9 December 2014 The Big HIT in the NFL: Head injuries are changing the way the game is played I firmly believe that the future of the NFL and all of its players is in jeopardy of being lost as the American sport as we know it simply due to the fact that too many injuries are occurring in the NFL today than what was happening in the past. Sure past players got hurt, but players now hit ten times harder, play ten times tougher, it’s obvious they are due for a serious injury, it’s just a matter of time and when, surely they make millions each year, but is all that money worth the risk of losing your life or possibly harming it? Imagine this, you’re at your sons final football game as he’s a senior about to graduate, he’s got the crowd rooting for him, he’s the one who snaps the ball, yes the quarterback of the team. The defense is running full force, showing blitz when suddenly “ WHAM!” he takes a huge hit from a defensive player and stays laid out on the floor , suddenly coaches and staff from the team rush to the field while he remains still, the crowd silent , awaiting the outcome . Slowly he gets up with the help of the staff and coaches, he’s then carted to the locker room by team staff where they tell the parents that they are checking him for a concussion because it’s UIL protocol when it comes to hard extensive hits taken by a defenseless player. Not one person who loves football can deny that the big hits and huge plays are...
