Why Pursue A Career in Accounting?

As working as (Management Assistance) in Finance department; of ----- opened my eyes widely; to the importance of the Accountant’s Job; its privileges and its obstacles from so many levels.
Like any powerful and specialized job such as Accounting; it has its own shares of gains and losses; from both personal and professional aspects.
Although the Accountants after graduation; they don’t struggle a lot for job interviews or bothering themselves where to go! All they need to do actually; is to combine their goal & career’s ambition and match it; with any of the highly powerful corporation; located in the Abu Dhabi; like Deloitte; Ernest &Young; KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Otherwise there are the investment and retail banks; also the companies in all different fields of business recruit Accountants; to supervise their expenses and profits, and calculating earnings and costs.

Even after finding Accounting jobs recently or earlier ; my colleges at work can improve their careers greatly by obtaining more qualifications; for example the Chartered Accountant qualification (CA), and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Consequently; as I observe around the Finance department; their plans seems fixed as their numbers! They had it all planned from the moment they graduate. So what the Accountant exactly does?

In simple words the Accountant; is some who manages the Accounting tasks; for the individuals or to the whole firm. The Accountant takes many tasks according to the company’s size and the Accountant's specialization; which mostly including the tasks of generating Finance Reports; Taxes and all Company’s Payrolls.
The tasks itself can be different in small or large firms; in a small firm, an Accountant is mostly responsible for keeping all financial records. These records include; Payroll information; Accounts payable; Accounts receivable; Retail Sales Information; regarding investments held by the company.
While; in a large corporation, the Accountants will be dealing directly with internal audits, to confirm that; the financial records are perfect; and not bias to anyone.

The essential requirements to work as an Accountant; will be a certification from a certified & accredited agency; or a college degree in Accounting and Finance.
Accounting or Finance Department considered as a basic pillar in any company; which allow the Accountant to work for public and private sectors.

The highlights of Accountant’s job can be very straightforward. One reason; because of the accessing of interesting careers; as both of my survey candidates (The Accountant & Senior Budgeting & Reporting Specialist) admits that; they didn’t find it difficult to have job offers; which considered as a relief for any fresh Accounting or finance graduates; who can effectively start translating their career’s dreams into reality as soon as they can; while others will struggle all over again; to find at least job interview not a job offers; like the Accountants.
Another reason is; the Accountant has the attentiveness and perception of avoiding expenses and saving money for the future; as the (Senior Budgeting & Reporting Specialist) said she is perfectly able to calculate her own expenses.
However; Professional Corporation is easily accessible for Accountants; in case if their own company has financial crisis; they can easily transfer to another settled company; as (the Accountant) said thorough my interview with her. She transfer from her previous job where; she worked as a developee; due to budget & financial crisis in her old company; she transfer ------; and found a greater job offer as Accountant. This kind of issue is strictly confidential to the rest of the company’s employee expect the Accountants. The other Corporation with no financial crisis records can offer; other outstanding careers. All I can say how lucky she is!
Another privilege aspect; as both of survey applicants (The Accountant & Senior Budgeting & Reporting Specialist) confirmed that; the best social benefit is ;gaining people’s respect in the business industry, for so many reasons; one because people always seek their advice and valued their answers. Because, they are responsible for critical tasks; such as Keeping Accurate Financial Records; Paying Taxes on Time; which encourage people to ask for their guidance & help towards their personal financial matters.
Yet; (The Senior Budgeting & Reporting Specialist) mentioned that; leading Company’s meetings; is strong impact in her job; because it gives her control over the firm’s Finances. A firms’ future may depend on her approval of their Accounting records.

Nevertheless; there are serious drawbacks can affect; the Accountant’s professional & Personal drastically.
Such as the working hours; can be overwhelming and time consuming. Around 60 hour work a weeks; not all Accountants can bear with it; as one of the survey applicants (The Accountant); can’t find the right balance nor the time to pick up her kids from schools or even have lunch with them; she said for her career’s progress she must scarifies her family time.
Another financial concern is the; Deadlines of Accounting tasks are strict & rigid. For example; the Month -end and the year-end deadlines; are the most pressured times of the whole year. Both of the survey candidates (The Accountant & Senior Budgeting & Reporting Specialist) agree strongly these tasks are time uncontrollable & nerve racking; which always lacks the time to finalize it.
Besides; Accounting and finance jobs are mostly demanding; because every company always asks; for following their outcomes and expenses. Which allow the Accountants to identify the company’s problems straightway; and transfer to more profitable companies; to find Accounting jobs. This point can be a privilege to Accountants; to avoid any losses from their troubled firm; and in the same time this incident; might shows the Accountant’s lack of loyalty to the company; because they choose not to stay longer to support the company. Both of (The Accountant & Senior Budgeting & Reporting Specialist) can’t decide whether this step can be a privilege or a weak point; because they have their own financial obligation; due to their children school’ fees; and can’t risk their own career with problematic company; so that’s why sometimes they need to transfer into more settled & secure jobs.
Moreover; Accounting department; has a lower esteem image. Because the department itself; focus in checking and calculating the costs and outcomes; not on generating profits. While other department such as; sales or other revenue generating departments; this can be frustrating & disappointing to some Accountants.

Briefly; working as Accountants can be a ticket for a settled profession; with a big fat salary at the end of the month. All that sounds beneficial and profitable! But sometimes it’s not that stunning career; especially for married women; they make constant sacrifices to approve themselves in their jobs; which means less time with their family and friends; she will hold back her social life; if she wants to climb higher in her career; while she will descend much lower in her family life.

From my own point of view; I can say the price to success in Accounting; is very precious and costly in the same time. To achieve secures accounting career and happy family life; there are three main keys; which are; managing stress and time; completing tasks before deadline and stay focused towards tasks &responsibilities.

The Underrepresentation of Blacks in the Accounting Profession

...underrepresentation of blacks in the accounting profession in light of the increasing demand for Certified Public Accountants (CPA). The paper ex- plores the various reasons why blacks are underrepresented in the accounting profession. Furthermore, the paper examines these reasons through the lens of race and ethnicity. The paper also synthesizes multiple sources regarding blacks’ underrepresentation in account- ing. Blacks are underrepresented in accounting because of internal and external factors linked to their ethnic identity. Many blacks feel that they do not belong to the accounting profession, and as a result, they rarely choose accounting as a career. Many CPA firms think that blacks are not capable of doing the job and delivering the superior results that clients expect. While the demand for new and diverse accounting talents is increasing in light of recent white-collar crimes committed by Bernie Madoff, Enron and WorldCom, blacks’ representation in the ac- counting field still remains low. Research has shown that blacks are under- represented in most American Certified Public Accountant (CPA) firms. There is much speculation as to why this is so. One reason might be that blacks have some personal qualities that cause them to enter the account- ing profession at a low rate. Some people might even wonder if society is still oppressive towards blacks years after the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s. The reasons why blacks are underrepresented in the accounting profession include the...

It took me 26 years to decide to go back to school to pursue my AA in Accounting, despite all the pressures, and pushing that I had received from my parents and my family members. So in 2006 I decided that it was time, I looked around to a variety of different colleges and decided that I wanted to attend University of Phoenix Online because I did not want to deal with going to classes, instead I preferred to stay home and be comfortable. After my associates in accounting I decided that because I could still not find a permanent job, I would go ahead and pursue my bachelors of arts in accounting as well. When I was in my last class of my bachelor’s degree, I was toying around with going after my master’s in business administration, and then what will I specialize in. I had been looking for jobs for quite some times on the Internet and in the papers for quite some time and have been sending out hundreds of resumes and have received no responses. I figured that if I went for a master’s degree it would open many more doors in the future. It was a tough decision on whether I wanted to pursue that master’s in business, after all I had been going to school now for the past four years, or if I should just stop at my bachelor’s degree and look for a job. It turned out that finding a job was not working out...

Pursuing an MBA will make it possible to live a better economic life and to have a good job with security and top pay. I have chosen this route even with the current economic situation, knowing that new jobs may not be available by the time I finish with my MBA. An MBA would benefit me greatly in a variety of ways. Pursuing an MBA will aid in the development of the skills I need in the finance and accounting areas. Of course the increase in pay from possessing an MBA does not hurt either. When researching jobs online I am finding that by having a master’s degree, the pay is substantially higher than those with a bachelor’s degree. Other than career and financial reasons, I do have a personal goal to achieve more than my siblings. Out of four sisters only two of us have a bachelor’s degree. I would love nothing more than to become the other sibling to obtain a masters degree. Plain and simple, I want to do better than all of my sisters. In this economy, having a good paying job with security is vital. “In nearly every sector of the globe, the prospect of making more money and living a better economic life draws thousands of students to MBA programs” (Euders.com, 2009)...

Uni Life

...Part A In future, I want to be a chartered accountant in a well- known company or accounting firm. There are a few graduate attributes which will help me in succeeding in my career. The first graduate attribute is effective communication skill. Good communication skills help us to present our points and messages in the most convincing way. Firstly, we have to speak proficiently together with gestures, good posture, movement, and good control of our voice because it would help us to convince people easily. Speaking without moving our body or in a monotonous voice will result in a boring presentation and thus, people will find it hard to focus on what we are saying. Effective communication skills also gives clarity which will prevent misunderstandings that lead to arguments. With this skill, our messages will be simple, direct and easy to be uunderstood. Next, accountants have to present to the company’s owners and shareholders every now and then, regarding the company’s financial performance. With effective communication skills, they will feel confident with my work. If I cannot communicate effectively, I will find it difficult to present about the company’s performance and I will also be unable to answer their questions regarding the company’s financial matters. Besides, information technology skills are indeed important in this modern world. We have to learn how to make full use of information technology such as power point slides, e-mails, internet, mobile applications...

Personal Statement for Grad School

...My future career in pharmacy was well thought-out before college until the very moment I was questioned about how I felt about my life. I was assisting a patient in the pharmacy and she merely asked me, “How’s life?” My response of simply being content prompted an unexpected response from not only her but myself as well. She responded, shocked, that I couldn’t have used a better depiction and how satisfying it was to hear that I was content. Her stunned reaction made me question not just about how rare it was for others to provide a similar response but ultimately, whether or not I meant what I had said. Was I really content? That was when it truly hit me, I was not satisfied with my life. I did not want to become a pharmacist. For me, it was something that lacked exhilaration, something that I just had absolute no desire for. All because of this patient's comment, I made the drastic change to drop pharmacy and switch career paths. I no longer wanted to make the same mistake and choose something I did not enjoy, like pharmacy. I wanted to explore something I have always been passionate about, which is numbers! While I found out the hard way about what I wanted to pursue in life, it was better for me to derive to this decision sooner than later. Later that year, I decided to get my feet wet by first taking an introduction to accounting course. It was so minimal and to explore even more, I took the subsequent course as well.
