The Paleolithic era was considered an era where women were strong and not judged on physical appearance. Back then the central thought dominating the society was the thought of survival and reproduction and the Paleolithic women played a very important part in that. If one has to look at a Venus de Willendorf Doll, the first thing that would be noticed is the size of the woman. The woman is robust and is without clothing or a face; this doll was made like this to show how little the importance of physical appearance was back then, when everyone was striving for survival. These dolls are not just pieces of art but they represent the history of women before our time, and they reveal to the modern society that the things which are important to us like appearance, fame, and fortune actually do not matter; but that the important thing is to protect one’s family and survive against all odds. Now- a-days it is the complete opposite. Instead of dolls that look like the Venus de Willendorf Doll, we have Barbie Dolls. The problem with this is the fact that Barbie Dolls have created a lot of problems for children. Barbie Dolls infused in young girls unrealistic expectations for life; it made girls think they had to look, live, and act in a certain way which is acceptable to the society.
Barbie Dolls were made to be teen fashion dolls but little did the manufacturers know that they would change the society forever. Barbie Dolls changed society in many ways. First of all, it infused in the minds of young girls unrealistic expectations about what they were supposed to look like further in life. Instead of modeling the dolls as representation of actual people the makers made them superficial. The reason Barbie Dolls instigated such unrealistic expectations regarding appearance is because; if they were to make a life size Barbie Doll she would have been then 5’9 and 110lbs, which is 35lbs below the standard weight. This is not a good message to send to young girls, because this is how eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia start to take over these girls’ lives. Another negative thing with Barbie dolls is the way the manufacturer keeps making different skin colors of the dolls without even trying to bring about any resemblance with the ethnicity they are actually trying to depict. They all look the same with just different skin tones, unlike the Venus de Willendorf Doll, which resembles the women of the concerned time period. Barbie Dolls that are supposed to be Hispanic or African American should look like them, so they should have curves and curly hair like that of a real African American or a Hispanic woman.
Another thing that Barbie Dolls do is undermining job value by making it look so easy to be anything you want. Of course young girls should know they can be whatever they want to be, but they must understand the importance of hard work which is needed to accomplish success and only just because you are beautiful does not mean you will get whatever you want.“Barbie’s first job was a fashion designer; she has since had over 100 different careers” (Cross, 2011). Such a career graph is unrealistic and nobody can have that many jobs in his/her life, and Barbie Dolls should not let young girls think that it is possible. Being professionals like doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc. is very difficult and it takes time to attain perfection and succeed in such professions, and the way to success should not be taken lightly. As adults we know these things are very important and should not be considered lightly; but as kids we are amazed with what Barbie can do. It may seem okay because kids will learn the difference between right and wrong as they grow up, on the other hand Barbie is influencing their decisions as we speak. That is why the Venus de Willendorf Doll is such a great role model, because it represents women whose occupations were surviving and giving birth. These may seem like simple things but they are not. Hunting and gathering while raising a family was a painstaking and important job. Of course times have changed since then and women do much more. However, a career is much more than something that somebody does. It has a meaning and should be focused on thoroughly, unlike the Barbie Doll’s bifurcating professions.
The way a young girl acts in the world is an important thing; it decides how society perceives her. Even though Barbie is just a doll she still has a personality. The Barbie Doll does whatever she wants without a caring for the other views, and her main concern is to have fun. She dresses inappropriately, by wearing her bikinis and short dresses and skirts; and is always out with her friends having parties. To young girls her life may seem great and much joyous, but that should not be the life of a responsible adult. The Barbie Doll may be perceived as sweet and not harmful, but that is simply not true. Society may see her as perfect, even parents may like to think she is perfect; but being perfect is unrealistic and wrong. Imperfection is what makes us human, so why doesn’t Barbie show young girls that it’s okay not to be perfect and it’s okay to make mistakes. The Venus de Willendorf Doll is a great example of responsible woman, and it symbolizes how people make sacrifices for family, and how we should embrace imperfection.
There are many difference between Barbie Dolls and Venus de Willendorf Dolls; one show unrealistic expectations and the other shows us history and the nature of a real woman. Barbie dolls were made to sell and make money and they even changed society, as we know it. And the Venus de Willendorf Dolls were simply made to show how women looked back then, and they are now looked at upon as treasured art. Both of these dolls send messages to society, but it does not mean the message is good and it also doesn’t mean the message is even heard by the society. Some may not think of the Barbie doll in a critical manner. But time has shown us that a lot of society does think of the Barbie Doll in this manner. And young girls need role models, and Barbie is just not good enough because she simply is not realistic.

Week 4 Annotated Bibliography
For some, Barbie Dolls are considered a fun little doll children play with. But parents do not realize the effects Barbie dolls have on your children. Considering Barbie a role model as a perfect figure, young girls are in a perception to imply the same on themselves. Girls are adapting unusual eating habits in order to imitate or replicate Barbie doll. The attire of the doll is neither realistic nor healthy. The authors explain how there is a lot of controversy when it comes to the new Barbie dolls because they have different ethnicities now. But the reason there is controversy is because they look exactly like the normal Barbie doll but just different colors; this brings up a lot of arguments because each ethnicity has a special trait and Barbie refuses to show it because then the doll might not look perfect. But if Barbie really wants to make a statement they should start making dolls that look like real women instead of the unrealistic dolls, this will not only put parents’ mind at ease, but it will show girls what healthy women look like.

You think you know someone? KARI CROSS. (2011, July 07). Retrieved from http://countoncross.wordpress.com/tag/barbie-through-the-years

Kari Cross explains how you may think you know a lot about Barbie dolls, but you really do not know much about the history of it all. She explains the story of the life the actually Barbie doll had, she talks about how she had one brother and four sisters, she had was in love with Ken, she had many hobbies and basically how this doll became like this. But the way Barbie was actually named was by the creator’s Ruth ad Eliot. They had a daughter named Barbra and a son named Ken, which made them come up with Barbie and Ken. Throughout the years, the Barbie doll has changed dramatically. It is because they changed it to match each era and every new style that came out back then. They still do this with Barbie dolls today. Such as the original Barbie doll had brown hair and high arched eyebrows which was the style back then, in the 60’s she had a lot of different hairstyles, in the 70’s they completely changed her face structure, in the 80’s they began to have African American and Hispanic Barbie’s, and etc. So Barbie has made changes to make it look better, but not because they want little girls to look like that just because they would like little girls to want them more.
The Venus of Willendorf. Witcombe, C. L. C. E. (n.d.). Retrieved from ttp://72.52.202.216/~fenderse/Venus.htm Christopher L. C. E. Witcombe explains how the Venus Doll came to be. He explains many things such as she was the first image of a women and how if was founded in 1908, but it was made somewhere between 30,000-25,000 BCE. The Venus doll is not just prehistoric art that was found, but it also gave society an image of how women looked like in those times, and with all of that THE VENUS OF WILLENDORF became known as “The First Woman.” He explains how the name Venus came to be. The doll was originally named la poire - "the pear , because of the shape of the body the doll had; but was changed to describe the ivory on the figure and then it just stuck. The name change was so much more; it made her look more mundane rather than a goddess of some sort. The society was a matriarchal society and women had a very important role to play in shaping the society and hence the role of women in the society was not only influential but also very prominent.

...HUMN303 - DeVry University- April 21, 2013 Venus de Willendorf vs. Barbie With Time, Brings Change HUMN303 - DeVry University- April 21, 2013 Venus de Willendorf vs. Barbie With Time, Brings Change Introduction Venus de Willendorf is a statuette that first appeared during the Upper Paleolithic period. The exaggerated carvings of the body parts were how the artists of that time viewed women, fat and fertile. History often takes from the past to reinvent the future. Today’s society has the Barbie doll. Ruth Handler created it in 1959. Its long legs and slim figure has been worship by so many, that real women have undergone intense cosmetic surgeries to resemble the doll. Both figurines have gained notoriety based on the representation of women of their era, displayed their own meaning of beauty and cultures’ perception of it. Venus de Willendorf Venus de Willendorf, also known as the Woman of Willendorf, is a type of art statuette that was discovered sum 25,000 years ago. It was discovered in 1908 by the banks of the Danube River near the town of Willendorf in Austria during diggings led by Josef Szombathy. The statuette was carved from a rare oolitic (stone eggs) limestone using a flint tool. This particular type of stone was not available in the area it was located in, thus concluding the statuette was not created locally. Standing 4 3/8 inches (11.1 centimeters) tall, the figurine is noticeably rounded. It displays obese and voluptuous women’s body parts. It...

...Image: Cultures Idolizing the Female Form A Comparison and Contrast of the Barbie Doll and Venus de Willendorf Image: Cultures Idolizing the Female Form A Comparison and Contrast of the Barbie Doll and Venus de Willendorf The fact that cultures have idolized the female form in our modern era is not a new concept. Beauty in modern times has been held to the highest standard, but where and why did we get our ideal of beauty? Culture plays a large in role in how beauty is defined, and this is very clear when it pertains to the culture behind both the Venus de Willendorf and the more modern Barbie doll. Clearly, idolizing the female form is an ideal that has existed since the very first centuries that humans walked the earth. Taking a look at the two different cultures that idolize the female form may give us a little bit of insight into the similarities and differences there were between two different society’s composed of very similar beings. The statuette Venus de Willendorf was first discovered in Austria in 1908 by the archaeologist Josef Szombathy. This is the earliest image of a human being known to exist, thought to have been created during the Paleolithic era some 25,000 years ago (Witcombe)! The climate in the region that the statuette was discovered was probably an ice covered land, and therefore, her voluptuous image probably portrays a desire for food and to survive. Humans will always have one thing in common: survival. Whether it is a work of art portraying...

Hero Builders

...technology can be used to custom manufacture dolls. Shortly after September 11, 2001, Vicale Corporation, BBC’s parent company, purchased an e-commerce toy company. Vicale’s first action figure was made to honor the heroes who emerged from that event. Using RPT, he crafted a doll with the head of George W. Bush and the body of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Other figures followed. This case is about a design firm that used exploratory research to define a niche in the action-figure business. www.herobuilders.com >The Scenario Used with permission of Pamela S. Schindler ©2004. Emil Vicale, president of HeroBuilders.com Corporation, thinks entrepreneurial. His industrial design company, BBC Design Group, has been operating for more than 20 years. One cornerstone of his design business is an innovative technology called rapid prototyping (RPT). RPT allows a designer to go from 3-D computer model to 3-D plastic or wax prototype in a matter of hours rather than the days, weeks, or months that prototypes using subtraction technology (carving) from wood, metal, or clay might take. As part of a growth strategy implemented shortly after September 11, 2001, Vicale finalized the purchase of an e-commerce toy company, ToyBuilders.com. This was his first venture into the manufacture of toys, although his design firm had done developmental work for toy companies in the past. Vicale made his first doll to honor an admired hero of 9/11. “The Our Hero doll (resembling George Bush) turned out great,...

New Heritage Doll

...New Heritage Doll Company Capital Budgeting Analysis The New Heritage Doll Company is a company that makes dolls for children between the ages 3 – 12 years. The company has revenues of 245 million USD and an operating profit of 24 million USD. The company has three major divisions – The Retailing division, the Licensing division and the Production division. The head of the production division has to choose between two capital intensive projects that have been presented to her - the “Make My Doll Clothing Extension” (MMDCE henceforth) and the “Design Your Own Doll” (DYOD henceforth). This paper will try and analyze some of the issues that may need to be taken into account by the division head before she chooses a project for final approval. Issue 1: Product Line Growth Rate vs Industry Growth Rate The doll segment in the US is slated to grow at 3% in 2013 and lasting franchise value for branded lines of dolls is considered rare – most doll lines lose their popularity within a few years of launch. Given this reality, the underlying assumption of the two brand managers for the two projects is, in my opinion, quite optimistic. The MMDCE line is expected to grow at 8% while the DYOD line is expected to grow at 6% - which is much higher than the expected rate of growth in the dolls segment. The production head must, in my opinion, do due diligence and consider if the growth rates for these product lines can exceed the average industry growth rate by such a large extent. Issue 2: Possibility...

...allocating overhead as a percentage of direct labor cost, the margins of 9% and 34% in the Geoffrey doll and the specialty branded doll #106 respectively, do not reflect the true cost of manufacturing. When using the ABC system, we see that a tremendous misallocation in “Receiving and Production Control” and in “Packaging and Shipping” occurred using the previous system. These skewed allocations of costs also distorted the margins as shown below. Comparison of Alternative Costing Approaches | | | | | | Unit Overhead Cost | | Geoffrey Doll | | Specialty #106 | Volume-based | | $11.19 | | $13.99 | Activity-based | | 7.22 | | 25.01 | Difference | | $3.97 | | $11.02 | Unit Margin | | | | | Volume-based | | 1.81 | | $12.26 | Activity-based | | 5.78 | | 1.24 | Difference | | $3.97 | | $11.02 | Return on Sales | | | | | Volume-based | | 8.62% | | 34.06% | Activity-based | | 27.51% | | 3.43% | Difference | | 18.89% | | 30.62% | If G.G. can reduce the number of shipments and increase the size of the production runs of the #106 doll, the margin will increase dramatically. It may be a good idea to instate minimum orders. In the Springfield plant, the ABC system is unnecessary because all costs are allocated to the production of a single product. The Eyes That Follow

...Essay The Eyes That Follow Jon Torres Porcelain dolls. Staring at me with unblinking eyes, surrounding me, and I can’t get away. My older sister, standing there laughing at me, a horror movie about killer dolls playing in the background. Me, 5 years old and strapped down to a chair. I still have the fear of dolls that I experienced that day, although it is not quite as severe. My older sister was a firm believer in tough love, and she was always picking on my brothers and me. It isn’t until I sit here, 17 years later, that I realize that it wasn’t just a prank, but her way of trying to toughen me up. I remember that day as one of horror and hurt, but it wasn’t as bad as a 5 year old mind can make it out to be. I woke up expecting the normal life of a kid, playing with toys and watching Tom and Jerry as I waited for my mom to take over with As the World Turns. Little did I know that my older sister was home as well, “sick” with one of those 24 hour stomach bugs. She decided it would be the perfect opportunity to teach her passive-aggressive younger brother to be tough and not cry. Boy did that backfire. She called me into the living room, and the first thing I noticed was the spinning desk chair in the middle of the room. I didn’t see my sister, so I sat down and looked at the television, expecting to see some commercial about a new cleaner or a toy that I would want. Instead, there is an inflated face of a porcelain doll, a movie that had been paused. In the blink of an...

Case Study Ggtoys

...G.G. Toys: Case study #2 G.G. Toys was a toy manufacturer facing problems with productivity and profitability. The company found a profitable product in their Geoffrey doll and Specialty branded doll #106. Retailers could customize to the specifications and buying habits of their customer base. On average, the Geoffrey Doll cost $19.19 to produce, and the #106 doll $23.74. To access in a study of their overhead cost for both of their plants, research showed that: 1. A setup was performed in the Chicago facility each time a modification to the dolls was made. Additionally, each time a specialty-branded doll was produced, a separate setup was required to process the raw materials to the required specifications. 2. Workers in the Chicago facility often operated several machines simultaneously once they were set up. Thus, machine-related expenses might relate more to the machine hours of a product than to its production-run labor hours. Because each retailer required slight alterations to the Geoffrey doll's overall appearance, a new setup and production run was required for each design change. Retailers were found to be conservative in their ordering patterns, ordering fewer units more frequently. Thus increasing the number of setups required, causing increased labor and material cost. The research done by the external group did show an area of opportunity. Because setup is time consuming, labor intensive, and costly, it would be within reason (at least with...

This is a sequence of adapting to the culture roles according to your sex, this starts at birth and will continue throughout life. Toys are very gender specific, because they teach and reinforce stereotypical gender roles for children. When we are first born children make an image of themselves as a boy or girl. We do this so we can fit in with society so we can interact with parents and teachers. Children pay close attention to the gender appropriateness of toys only after they get a firm grasp on the concept of gender constancy. Gender constancy alludes to a child's understanding that gender remains the same for the rest of his or her life. Children become aware of the fact that they will always be male or female...
