Many individuals believe that proposal essays are written to convince readers that certain problems exist. Others feel that they are written to allow the reader to view a particular problem in an alternative way. However, proposals are created to address problems and try to provide solutions, while creating emotional responses within the reader. In Why Not a Football Degree?, written by William F. Shugart II, there are many solutions to the specific problem, such as, specific degree programs, lengthening deadlines, and offering other ways to earn payment. It is known that college athletes are paid, however the amount is highly speculated. Many individuals believe that these athletes are paid tremendous amounts, however, “the compensation payable to a college athlete is limited by the NCAA to a scholarship that includes tuition, books, room and board, and a nominal expense allowance” (460). Athletes generate a large sum of money for their universities since they provide entertainment and attract large crowds. Therefore, college athletes are incredibly underpaid. If the competitive marketplace system was applied, less money would go to the colleges and universities, while more money went to the actual athlete. This would be a more reasonable way to distribute sport-generated money. In the literary piece, Why Not a Football Degree?, Shugart exposes many problems within college athletics and offers solutions to them, such as: offering sport majors, extending the scholarship length, and providing alternative ways to distribute compensation. The author clearly explains his points by providing ample detail and using a commonly known problem. In proposal essays, issues are clarified, sometimes analyzed, and many solutions are given in an attempt to efficiently fix the problems.
