A postman's walk for injustice!

A white man trying to end slavery is something that people don't hear everyday, especially when slavery was a big deal in the year 1963. William Lewis Moore was a Baltimore Mailman that was going to end slavery. He was set on making a letter that would change peoples minds on blacks. He was going to reach a place that would help him with his campaign on ending slavery. Soon he would begin walking, then reaching the highest points, and then the final hour. For William Lewis Moore this was going to be a delivery he would never forget. In the Year 1963 William lewis Moore set out on delivering what he called “the biggest delivery of his life.” William started walking on the afternoon the day after Martin Luther King Jr. Day. William decided to walk along highway 11. History.com states that William was part of the Congress of Racial Equality, which means he would do anthing to end racial activity anywhere he could. He started in Chattanooga Tenn. and realized that he wanted to go to Jackson Mississippi. He had rumpled clothes and coiffed hair with a big gap tooth grin. He began walking with the letters that he had …show more content…
He got some unfriendly comments from bystanders, shop owners, and vehicles that drove by.. According to npr.org some poeple gave him death threats and others mental abuse. Most said he could “never end slavery no matter where he was at in the world.” At about halfway through his journey a rumor was being spread from Tennessee, to Mississippi. A strange man is walking to hand over a letter to the governor for ending slavery. William was a hero to all blacks, now just 300 miles from Jackson Mississippi, WIlliam was feeling a little nervous. With a nervous feeling in his gut William walked two more miles. Then something happened that would be remembered for all

...“DON'T BUY WHERE YOU CAN'T WORK” MOVEMENT Senior Division Historical Research Paper "Don't Buy Where You Can't Work" was a movement also known as the "Buy Where You Can Work" It emerged in many major northern cities of the United States during the years of the Great Depression. It was put together in order to protest black unemployment rates that were often double or even triple the national average rates. In the year 1929, the Whip, a Chicago newspaper, under Editor Joseph Bibb, sponsored a campaign to boycott Chicago stores that refused to hire black individuals. The program was supported by the Reverend J. C. Austin of the Pilgrim Baptist Church. It resulted in the hiring of more than two thousand blacks, mostly as department stores clerks. The New Negro Alliance was formed in 1933 by three young men, writer and activist John Aubrey Davis, lawyer Belford V. Lawson, Jr., and college graduate M. Franklin Thorne. They were all outraged that white-run businesses in the middle of black neighborhoods refused to hire black workers. The Alliance instituted then-radical “Don't Buy Where You Can't Work” campaigns, organizing boycotts and pickets of white-owned businesses, or threatening to do so. In the 1930s, the campaigns sprang up in Northern urban areas and protested discriminatory hiring practices. Protesters would judge white-owned establishments that refused to hire blacks. Their main goal was to increase awareness about the community's collective economic power and...

Why does Lewis Carroll introduce us to such oddities as a blue caterpillar who smokes a hookah, a cat whose grin remains after its head has faded away, and a White Queen who lives backward and remembers forward? Is it all just nonsense? Was Carroll under the influence? This book probes the deeper underlying meaning in the Alice books and reveals a world rich with philosophical life lessons. Tapping into some of the greatest philosophical minds that ever lived— Aristotle, Hume, Hobbes, and Nietzsche—Alice in Wonderland and Philosophy explores life’s ultimate questions through the eyes of perhaps the most endearing heroine in all of literature. Accounting

...Centre-Ville, Montréal (Québec), H3C 3P8 - Canada Abstract Accounts manipulation has been the subject of research, discussion and even controversy in several countries including the USA, Canada, the U.K., Australia, Finland and France. The objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of the literature and propose a conceptual framework for accounts manipulation. This framework is based on the possibility of wealth transfer between the different stakeholders, and in practice, the target of the manipulation appears generally to be the earnings per share and the debt/equity ratio. The paper also describes the different actors involved and their potential gains and losses. We review the literature on the various techniques of accounts manipulation: earnings management, income smoothing, big bath accounting, creative accounting, and window-dressing. The various definitions of all these, the main motivations behind their application and the research methodologies used are all examined. This study reveals that all the above techniques have common elements, but there are also important differences between them. I. Introduction Finns have been manipulating accounts for a long time, and this practice, well known in the literature, has been given various names: earnings management, income smoothing, big bath accounting, creative accounting, and window dressing. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the literature and propose a conceptual framework for accounts...

...reputational mechanisms, the possibility of provision by private not-for-profit firms, as well as political patronage and corruption, are brought into play. 1 What kinds of goods and services should be provided by government employees as opposed to private firms? Should government workers make steel and cars in government-owned factories? Should teachers and doctors be publicly employed or should they work for private schools and practices? Should garbage be picked up by civil servants or employees of private garbage haulers? Should the whole economy be "socialized"? Although these are age-old questions in economics, the answers economists give to them, as well as the reasons for arriving at these answers, have been changing. In this paper, I describe some recent ways of thinking about government ownership. Half a century ago, economists were quick to favor government ownership of firms as soon as any market inequities or imperfections, such as monopoly power or...

Us Steel

...when the shareholders of USX spun off the oil & gas business of Marathon Oil and the steel business of U. S. Steel to shareholders. In 2001 it was still the largest domestically owned integrated steel producer in the United States, although it produced only slightly more steel than it did in 1902, after significant downsizing in the 1980s. U.S. Steel is a former Dow Jones Industrial Average component, listed from April 1, 1901 to May 3, 1991. It was removed under its USX Corporation name with Navistar International and Primerica. Formation J. P. Morgan and the attorney Elbert H. Gary founded U.S. Steel in 1901 (incorporated on February 25) by combining Andrew Carnegie's Carnegie Steel Company with Gary's Federal Steel Company and William Henry "Judge" Moore's National Steel Company for $492 million ($13.58 billion today). It was capitalized at $1.4 billion ($38.63 billion today), making it the world's first billion-dollar corporation. At one time, U.S. Steel was the largest steel producer and largest corporation in the world. In 1907 it bought its largest competitor, the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company, which was headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama. This led to Tennessee Coal's being replaced in the Dow Jones Industrial Average by the General Electric Company. The federal government attempted to use federal antitrust laws to break up U.S. Steel in 1911, but that effort ultimately failed. Time and competitors have, however, accomplished nearly the same thing. In...

The Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, 56(1), 22-34. Abstract This article explores ways to utilize students’ interest in fantasy literature to support critical literacy. Focusing on Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games series (2008, 2009, 2010), the author addresses how elements of the trilogy relate to violent acts in our world, helping student understand that violence and brutality toward children is not fiction, but very real, and that they can play a role in its abolishment, just like Katniss, through social action projects. Issues such as hunger, forced labor, child soldiers, and the sex trade that appear in both the fictional series and our world are discussed, encouraging students to assess their world and advocate for change. Examples of social action projects that utilize multiple literacies are suggested as a way to inspire students take action in the community and to stand up to injustice and brutality in hopes of creating a better world and a better human race. Using popular literature to pique student interest, this article explores how to incorporate the books in the Hunger Games series into the ELA classroom to support literacy and critical goals. Information and Communication Technologies in Tourism 2014

...better access, collaboration in a generation of information and technological convergence, have all contributed to the design of a new scientific paradigm. Thanks to our passion for research and to the continuous advancements in the technological ecosystem as well as the possibility of better understanding human activity and behavior we are on the threshold of a new era of the social science of tourism. This new social and technological paradigm affects tourism and human mobility in a way that gives the research process unheard-of possibilities. The current level of technological development allows for the construction of objects that are smaller, more intelligent and embedded in the environment and even wearable. These objects, which record and learn our habits are connected to the Internet and they have computing capabilities. They can also be interconnected and generate large quantities of information to benefit the environment in which they are located as well as the travellers that possess them. This gives rise to a new world of interconnected personal machines. This new world involves a convergence among what is physical, what is social and what is digital. Within this context, research assumes the principal role to guide evolution, transferring knowledge to the industry. Relevant academic research is more necessary than ever before in order to explore how ICT in tourism can...
