In the text “David’s Interview,” David speaks about his experience during his first year at Syracuse University. When David is asked “how has he changed as a person, since completing Freshman Year” he first responds by saying he “he was known as the guy who had no chill, cause he would literally speak his mind on whatever he thought was going on” (Gilstrap, David, personal interview, November 18, 2015). Also, he continues his response by stating that he “learned how to say conservative on the things he says” (Gilstrap, David, personal interview, November 18, 2015). David states that he “had so many good memories with the track team” and that this “was like almost every weekend second semester, so there was plenty of bonding done” (Gilstrap, David, personal interview, November 18, 2015). Also, he distinguishes that is favorite memory was “when he placed eighth at ACC’s overall as a freshmen” and that this success “was unexpected” (Gilstrap, David, personal interview, November 18, 2015). Additionally, Gilstrap states that his worst memory is when his teammate “Sabrina past away, unexpectedly” (Gilstrap, David, personal interview, November 18, 2015). David states that Freshman Year “showed him that there is a certain path that he must take to get where he wants to be” (Gilstrap, David, personal interview, November 18, 2015). Also, he states that “he must not participate in the stupid stuff that other people do” because they “will hinder him from getting to that path or getting to that final goal” (Gilstrap, David, personal interview, November 18, 2015). Additionally, he states that, at times, “the curriculum is difficult and the athletics are rigorous,” but it “kept him training, kept him studying all the time” which are “the healthy habits that would set him up for a great college career” (Gilstrap, David, personal interview, November 18, 2015). From this information, one may infer that Gilstrap envisions himself with a successful future and will not stop grinding until this vision becomes his present. This is because he has been used to success and cannot see himself living a life where he experiences failure. He has become cautious to avoid the distractions and to focus all his energy toward his grind in order for him to truly reach his future aspirations. This suggests that he will have no issue sacrificing friendships or habits in order to success at the next
