When characterizing the evolution of China in the eyes of the key political figures, my perception was the leaders often wanted things done routinely or traditionally. Political leaders often wanted stuff done their way and didn’t really care what other preferences there were. The Chinese represented themselves as hard working and people who were not going to be stepped on. Mao eventually founded the People's Republic of China, solidifying his control through land reform campaigns against landlords, and observed enemies of the state he termed as "counter-revolutionaries."

The events happening during this time period was World War II and also the signing of the Treaty of Alliance between the Soviet Union and Chinese as well as the start of what was later known as the Civil War. The "Dixie Mission" of US forces in Yan'an (1944-45) was also an event happening during this time period. The main goal of the mission was to investigate the Communist Party, both politically and militarily, then determine if the U.S would benefit from establishing contact. The reasoning for telling the story was to give the audience a different point of view on how they depict the Chinese as a whole. In this primary source Mao’s story illustrates how hard working the Chinese are, they don’t back down when the odds are against them when the story states, “When I die, my sons will carry on; when they die, there will be my grandsons, and then their sons and grandsons, and so on to infinity” (Mao 103). Even though it seemed to be an impossible task to accomplish, but the Old Man was determined to dig up the mountains. I believe the folk tale was created for the purpose for the Chinese to not to get discouraged whenever they felt defeated. The old man was rewarded for his hard work from God, when God sent angels to remove the mountains from the area.
