Week 5 Assignment

Making Research Decisions

2) Suppose you were preparing two-way tables of percentages for the following pairs of variables. How would you run the percentages?

a) Age and consumption of breakfast cereal.

Here I would use cross tabulation because there are two variables and start by listing age in the left most column. Each row would represent every age concerned, and then the following columns would be the amount or type of cereal consumed depending on what the question desired.

b) Family income and confidence about the family’s future.

Again I would use cross tabulation here, I would list in the left-most columns different income ranges and each row would be realistic of different family incomes. From there, each subsequent column would list a percentage relating whether those in that income bracket felt confident from a scale of 1 to 5.

c) Marital status and sports participation.

Here I would use cross tabulation to list two rows, married and unmarried. Then each column would represent a sport and a percentage of how many people participated in that sport. The last column would be marked as no sports for those that do not play sports at all.

d) Crime rate and unemployment rate.

I would use cross tabulation here and list a number of crime rates or crime rate ranges on the left. Each row would represent the crime rates of that percentage or the range. Then each column would represent a range of unemployment.

From Concept to Practice

7) Use the data in Exhibit 16-5 to construct a stem-and-leaf display.

5|13 15 17 19 21
10|9 11

15|5

20|7

a) Where do you find the main body of the distribution?

In the zero column or over 0 but less than 5

b) How many values reside outside the inner fence(s)?

3 values – 17,19 and 21

Discussion Questions

1) Build the management-research question hierarchy. First, Penton media identified the management dilemma – that ad advertising might not be generating as many leads as in the past. Next, they developed their management question – should they lower advertisement revenues if ads are not generating as much as before? They went on to develop their survey and research questions which included whether or not they made or planned to make purchase inquiries that year, what methods they would prefer to make the inquiries and whether or not they used the internet. Their investigative questions detailed whether or not they had phone, fax, or internet access and their measurement questions included whether the buyer made purchasing decisions based on their methods. This resulted in revealing that buyers were influenced by a greater demand on productivity, the fast pace of business and the cost of production. The management decision in the end concluded that the buyers behavior depended on how immediate their concern was and that the key was giving the buyer the information they wanted quickly.
2) What ethical issues are relevant to this study?
None that I know of – all information is requested not taken, everyone called has an equal chance to participate.
3) Describe the sampling plan. Analyze its strengths and weaknesses.
The sample was drawn from domestic subscribers, initially with a small sample, then a sample of 300 and finally with 4,000 Penton employees. Of them, 676 indicated that they were purchase decision makers of their organization. This sample size is large and has potential to be random, however because the pool is so large in the Penton employee category, much of the data may be skewed to however Penton employees may behave. It may not be relevant to worldwide. In addition, because they surveyed subscribers, they are only finding out information from people who already intend to respond and not from a larger sampling which might include people who do not want to respond to ads.
4) Describe the research design. Analyze its strengths and weaknesses.
The design included a number of survey questions with varying number of choices. Most of the questions required the surveyed person to decide on scales of 1-3 or 1-4. This will allow those taking the survey to find where they fit, but will not determine if certain parameters are a little above the middle or greatly above the middle like question 4a which states has increased or has decreased – we wont know by how much or how impressive it might be.
5) Critique the survey used for the study.
Because the survey allows for check all that apply, some data, when compared in the situations where the variable was a part of the “all that apply” question, may be confusing because information may be counted twice or more times.
6) Prepare the survey for analysis. Set up the code sheet for this study. How will this study be set up to be tabulated by a statistical analysis program like SPSS?
I would detail the data as a cross-tabulation with control and nested variables. On the left-most column I would list the various choices for question 1. Each row would represent that the user was a specifier, reccomender, purchaser or approver for the specific classification. Then in each column after, each question would list all of their sub questions and each of their choices, so the next column would be if they faxed for immediate product/service and their percentage and the column after that faxed for a nonimmediate product/service, followed by did not do in the past year and continue with the remaining questions.
7) Assume you are compiling your research report. How would you present the statistical information within this case to the IndustryWeek decision maker, the manager who must decide whether or not to continue to publish reader service cards?
I would use bar graphs to show the percentages of individuals who report calling specific numbers given by the reader service cards for an immediate need as opposed to those who do not in order to show that the service cards do or do not indeed make a difference.
8) Assume you are compiling your research report. What are the limitations of this study?
The limitations of this study are that only subscribers or employees were chosen as the sample, and we can only predict the choices those who are connected to the company in some way may act. We have no way of finding out those who are not suppliers or employees would act or if they would make different choices.
9) Assume you are the decision maker for IndustryWeek . Given the declining value of the reader response card to subscribers, originally designed as a value-enhancing service to IW readers and advertisers alike, what further research might be suggested by the findings of this study? Or do you have sufficient information to stop the use of reader response cards in IndustryWeek ?
It seems that most buyers prefer the convenience of an answer immediately, which the cards do not show. What would need to be researched is if those who did not have an immediate need and did use the card would choose to instead use the telephone to make their inquiry. If this were researched, we could then make our decision adequately. However, based on the current information I would probably go ahead and stop the use of reader response cards because most already use telephones or digital means of communication, so most of the rest may turn to that.

In addition, the history of how the Circuit courts were formed. In addition, How the Government runs and how it was intended to operate. The First page is about how the Government works and how it was intended to work. It too should be a valuable secondary resource as it traces the evolution of the U.S. Constitution from the British constitution. The historical background material should be very useful in setting the stage for future discussion of the British constitution. All of the goals are specified as equally simple pursue, the agencies go towards the ones that are simpler to put in. “OSHA was commissioned by the labor companies, which hazards are present at workplace that are going to be the bigger problem over safety.” All bills involved in the appropriation of federal money, originates in congress, it comes from the House of Representatives. However, for many years the practice was always the opposite of the intended plan. The Presidents have collected budget request and estimates from all the different departments and agencies of the executive branch, and assembles them and submits the proposal to Congress. ...Lesson Plans Creating a lesson plan for a group of Kindergarten students can be very difficult. The activities you choose need to be fun, educational, and engaging as most 5 year olds tend to lose focus easily. Most children love music and dancing, so for this lesson plan I have chosen a dance titled Father Abraham. As you may have noticed I will be developing this lesson for a class of kindergarten student’s. At this stage of development children should be able to make conscious decisions regarding music, art, dance and theater, and respond to them with some form of emotion. They should also be able to notice different sounds, pictures, and movements, as well as notice their similarities. They may even be able to create their own music and dance moves. Lastly they should have fairly good body control, and can work independently (NAEYC, 2004). This class has a total of 10 students and here is a look at the lesson plan: Grade Level: Kindergarten Class Size: 10 Students Student Learning Objective: As result of this lesson, students will . . . • Distinguish left and right • Follow commands on which arm, leg or head to move • March in place • Stay within their personal space State Standard: The North Carolina State Standards we will cover in this activity are, apply competent motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities, understand concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics that apply to the learning and performance...

Wk 5 Assignment Mastering a Skill

...With America’s society being so different from that of other countries, more specifically when it comes to modes of transportation, we have made the need to drive vehicles to go wherever we need to go. From the daily commute to work or school, to trips to the doctor’s office, grocery store and church, a skill that would benefit everyone to have would be vehicle repair. There are many people do not know much about the vehicles they drive, so they allow the opportunity to get scammed by bringing their vehicles to less than reputable mechanics. As much as I hate to admit this, it seems too, that woman are among one of the more frequently targeted groups of people to suffer from paying for repairs that are unnecessary or in some cases, never done to their vehicles in the first place. I also regret to share that I was one of these women. A repair shop in my current home town brought me to the conclusion that knowing how to fix problems in my vehicle is extremely important. I brought my car in to have the brake system serviced. I had just bought the car, and the brakes were disclosed to need replacement. From what the seller informed me of, I knew I was facing at worst, four new brake pads and new front rotors. The man at the front desk seemed to be very friendly, and assured it would not take him long to take a look at what was needed, then call me to let me know before he removed and replaced a single part. This made it easier to trust him, so I agreed. I left him my keys...

Sci 162 Wk-5 Assignment

...I chose cognitive decline for my assessment. “Cognitive” means the ability to think; so cognitive decline means a decrease in one’s ability to think. This includes all mental functions, including memory, calculation, verbal ability, abstraction and judgment. As people age, increasing numbers suffer from this. Cognitive decline is more common with older individuals over the age of seventy. This particular illness, by itself doesn’t cause death, however; it can most certainly have great impact on ones quality of life, and to some extent become a burden to loved ones. Why? it has to do with mental health, stability. It has been referenced and categorized through the public, not doctors-with dementia, and often with Alzheimer’s, but it is not- cognitive decline indicates a decrease in the ability to think. Dementia and Alzheimer’s is much more of a decline- in fact with these two it is more like a down fall in and of mental capacity, not thinking alone like the cognitive decline- which is gradual. Although Alzheimer’s is present in about half of these cases, however; there seem to be few real differences in the risk factors compared to those not associated with Alzheimer’s. The main risk factors associated with cognitive decline include: hypertension, diabetes, cigarette smoking, lack of exercise- both mental and physical, and many other dietary and laboratory factors. Overall, up to 90% of the causes of cognitive decline are under our control. And, of course there are...

Revision Practice Com 156 Wk. 5 Assignment

...Revision Practice COM 156 Wk. 5 Assignment There are several changes that can be made to this paper. The first change that can be made is in the first paragraph where it reads “and was thought to be a contender to earn an academy award nomination. Ultimately that honor was not bestowed on the film, “it could have read “with possibilities of an academy award nomination, but ultimately it did not receive this honor”. Another possible change could be where it reads “but it’s popularity and ability to elevate the comic book film, which is rarely associated with quality storytelling, remain” could read “It is a rare quality of storytelling that has the ability to elevate the comic book film’s popularity the way this film did.” Moving onto the second paragraph, the main change needed is to eliminate the run-on sentence that takes up over half of the paragraph. This sentence should read “Specifically the films writer and director, Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Heath Ledger earned an academy award for his role as the Joker in this movie; sadly it wasn’t till after he had passed away. The Joker was one of Heath’s last roles and an excellent performance it was.” In the third paragraph instead of again listing the actors, the writer could have written; “While in most comic book movies the actors are not given any moments to showcase their acting abilities, this particular list of actors, while impressive, where able to showcase while excelling in their roles as well.” The...

Wk 5 Team Assignment -Contemporary Issues in Western Relligions

...Contemporary Issues in Western Religions University of Phoenix World Religious Traditions II REL /134 January 24, 2011 Contemporary Issues in Western Religions This paper will describe the historical connections and theological similarities with Pentecostal versus Roman Catholicism including what ways the two religions are the same, how the two religions differ from its ‘parent’ faith, describe the leadership structure, discuss its identity (practices, clothing, dietary, etc.), how the members view themselves, how outsiders view the group, and identify any contemporary struggles within the Pentecostal religion. The historical connections and theological similarities of Pentecostal and Roman Catholicism have ancient roots. Although the Pentecostal movement emphasizes the fullest extent of emotional Christian worship, Roman Catholicism emphasizes traditional teachings and practices (Molloy, 2010). Other similarities include the belief in the Holy Trinity, the authority of the Holy Bible, the Importance of good works, the value of tradition, guided interpretation of the Bible, Hierarchical authority, and sacraments (Molloy, 2010). Other examples of the similarities between Roman Catholicism and Pentecostal are that Jesus is the only begotten son of God and died for the sins of the entire world; the Trinity consists of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit; by faith in Jesus Christ, believers are given eternal life. The Pentecostal movement believes...

Fin 200 Wk 8 Day 5 Individual Assignment

...• Write a 200- to 300-word description of the four time value of money concepts: present value, present value of an annuity, future value, and future value of annuity. Describe the characteristics of each concept and provide an example of when each would be used. The future value, we measure the value of an amount that is allowed to grow at a given interest rate over a period of time. Assume an investor has $1,000 and wishes to know its worth after four years if it grows at 10 percent per year. At the end of the first year, the investor will have $1,000 _ 1.10, or $1,100. By the end of year two, the $1,100 will have grown to $1,210 ($1,100 _ 1.10). The present value is the exact opposite of the future value. For example, earlier we determined that the future value of $1,000 for four periods at 10 percent was $1,464.We could reverse the process to state that $1,464 received four years into the future, with a 10 percent interest or discount rate, is worth only $1,000 today—its present value. The future value for the annuity in is a four period annuity, the first $1,000 comes at the end of the first period and has but three periods to run, the second $1,000 at the end of the second period, with two periods remaining—and so on down to the last $1,000 at the end of the fourth period. The present value of an annuity, the process is reversed. In theory each individual payment is discounted back to the present and then all of the discounted payments are added up, yielding...
