Wood -Works Carvings creates custom wood cabinets, furniture and carvings, that range in scale from miniature to full sized. In order to create such custom works it requires the company to lease out warehouse space for the milling process. Custom wood carvings have to be created by those that already haves the necessary skills and are familiar with how to operate the mill equipment. Wood-Work Carvings is a small company that will employ around forty people that will be employed in three broad departments, which range in areas of responsibilities from human resources, logistics management, and mill workers. Those that work in the human resources department will be critical in ensuring that the company brings in the right people with the right skill sets to move the company forward. Wood Work Evaluation

...requirements of the design brief. For my year 12 electronics major assignment I was set the task to design and make a low voltage regulator, the constraints of the task was that it needed to fit into a commercial manufactured housing that is 120mm x 65mm x 40 mm, Soldering must be used , Soldering iron will be used, Must work reliably and must be to a High quality soldering standard. I felt I had completed all these task to a high standard and had meet all the requirements needed of that of the design brief. I was set out to achieve a working low volatge regulator that would notify the vehicle driver if the battery is discharging and becoming flat. I felt that I have completed the requirements to a high standard. The evidence that I have to support my claims are that I had taken pictures regularly and also when testing the regulator the lights would turn on once the multimeter read 12 volts. The final product didnt come easy as I had some trouble when making the low voltage regulator when I first tried to test my regulator to see if it worked none of the lights were going on, this led to do some fault finding task to see where the problem is and try to fix it. Once I had found the problem it was an easy fix and when I tired testing it again it worked perfectly. If I were to make this low voltage regulator differently I would take more time tinning the solder on the PCB board making it smooth and shinny and take more care bending the components legs for a better fit...

Wood Extension Project

...Wood is one of the most widely used materials in the world. For a wood extension project, I decided to extend my plank of wood physically and conceptually. I decided to create a phone from a plank of wood and turn it into a persuasive poster in order to raise awareness of being present, being mindful of everything that the "now" moment contains. Wood is clearly a natural resource. At the spiritual level, trees help people become more aware of the connections with something larger than themselves. In mythology, trees are sometimes portrayed as the abodes of nature spirits. Trees call people to a state of “mindfulness,” where they become better in tune with and more compassionate toward the surroundings. I came across the idea of extending my...

Bamboo Sequestration Idea

...order to preserve our forests, we need to find new ways to reduce our dependency on wood. Since bamboo is one of the fastest growing grasses, a significant converter of CO2 and potentially as strong as wood – this project will test the strength of wood against bamboo. If bamboo can support even close to the same weight as wood, we can imagine a day when bamboo can be used as a replacement. In an effort to make this experiment practical, within my appendix, I will also propose a way that we can grow bamboo in the Bay Area utilizing marginal/unused land. These areas will create revolutionary new carbon-offset zones, provide additional revenue to local governments, reduce significant amounts of CO2, develop new businesses in an emerging industry, and promote, by example, green living. Purpose: Is bamboo stronger than wood, and if so, can it help us stop global warming? Research: Hypothesis: The wood will break under the same conditions and weight before the bamboo. Materials: 9 sticks of bamboo sized per test 9 pieces of solid wood sized per test 2 large plastic buckets 2 “S” hooks Chain to attach the hooks to the wood Sand and bricks Two cement platforms to put the wood on Procedures: Lay the wood on the platforms and attach the “S” hook. Attach a bucket to the “S” hook and fill with sand/bricks until the wood breaks. Weight the bucket. Take the “S” hooks of the wood and place them on the bamboo. Attach the bucket to the “S” hooks and...

Experiencing the Arts

...today. Art is included in everything that we own whether it is a table or a painting. It is something that somebody thought of and shaped it into something of beauty for the owner to relate to. Or if you cannot own the type of art that you are witnessing it is something to feel and perceive in your way. I recently made a bookcase for my granddaughter. I wanted her to appreciate the craft of woodworking and all of the thought process that went into crafting this item for her. Besides the history of it coming from family, it also has all the perceptions of a well-crafted piece of furniture. First I had to decide what type of wood that I wanted to work with. I chose elderberry because of all the variations of the wood pattern and wood grain that it shows when it is varnished. I handpicked the lumber so I could get the right contour and the right flow of the wood grain in the pieces, so they complemented each other in the finished product. I hand- crafted all of the pieces without using nails or screws or power tools. I added a hand carved rose to the top of the bookcase to add to the simplicity of it. I used a basic 18th-century plan so that it would add...

The Craftsmanship of Jamaican Woodwork

...be to criticize the minor imperfections of these pieces – the uneven pattern created by carving by hand, the lack of perfect symmetry in the manmade spindle form. This cynical view has some validity – if; the priority of making the object is the actualization of perfection. Social commentators like Richard Sennett believe this kind of priority misses the true point of Craftsmanship – the desire to do something well for its own sake. I agree. The actualization of Craftsmanship is not about the making a perfect object. It is about the intrinsic need to do a job well for its own sake. There is not much published documentation about the history of professional woodwork in Jamaica. Inferences can be drawn through history, that making items from wood has been a longstanding part of Jamaican culture, beginning with the crafts made by the Tainos. These indigenous people crafted their homes, boats and even gods...

Tour A: International Paper, Androscoggin Mill’s central ordering department receives all orders and places them in open slots in their weekly production cycles. The manager of operations control must take into consideration how many machines are available, which ones run what process, and how long each process runs. The production schedule is very detailed but remains flexible to allow for changes. Demand for paper products is cyclical in nature and fluctuates with the economy. A linear program ran each quarter to optimize the schedule. Similar size orders were grouped together to eliminate as much waste as possible. Trucks and railcars also had to be scheduled for shipments. . Tour B: Norcen Industries key production considerations would be scheduling. Small jobs were given preference to expedite billing. As drops in demand created...

David Nash Art

...remained both his studio and home ever since. Wales was ideal for Nash, because he was surrounded by abundant resources and plenty of time to further develop his wood works. 2. The most interesting thing I discovered about David Nash was that he uses a chainsaw and axe as his primary tools as well as using a blowtorch in many of his works.David Nash uses wood as a medium for all his works. His interest in working with wood began as a child, when Nash helped clear and replant a forest his father owned. He also worked for the Commercial Forestry Group, where he learned about many kinds of wood. He is known for doing land art involving wood that remains in nature, as well as displaying his wood sculpture in studios. He carves wood from fallen trees as well as creates sculptures from growing plants. 3. Nash first decided to move to Wales after graduating from Brighton College due to the extremely low cost of living. In these years he experimented with making tower like sculptures and some very abstract works. He used paint to give more detail to these sculptures as well, which was unique to this period for Nash. He continued experimenting with this tower theme when he returned to Chelsea School of Art in 1969-1970. 4. Upon graduating from Chelsea, Nash decided to experiment with some smaller more natural lengths of wood rather than pre-cut joists. He found ways of using nature to hold his projects together rather than carpentry. Three Dandy Scuttlers was actually inspired by...

They have a good reputation on the product that they build, because they have taken the time figure out how to make quality work and use quality material. There is a process in place in order to manufacture and assemble the piano. First of all they just don’t use any wood, they use Eastern rock maple wood to be precise. They start with raw boards to create a rim with specific measurement. Next, a total of 18 separate slat, 14 layers of maple and 4 layers of woods are glued and stacked together to form a book. Then comes the process of bending rim into the shape of a piano. This process could not be done, without a crew, but not just any crew. A crew of six skilled specialized employees that have just 20 minutes to complete the book and they use block and tackle and wooden levers and mallets into a rim bending press. This process is the same process that Steinway & Sons have used for more than a century and is all done by hand and all at one time. With all this hard work, their job does not end there. The company also need other departments, such as a marketing department in order to market their product. The financial department takes care of all the accounting issues.
