The managers of the company can either retain cash with the company for further investment of distribute to owners of the company – the shareholders. Concepts Reinforced Profit maximization, social welfare and growth are the three principal competitors to the wealth maximization role. Profit maximization requires managers to keep all expenses low. Businessmen are supposed to be socially responsible. They did not live in an ethical vacuum. Moral standards may change as society evolves. Shareholder wealth maximization rule is based on the assumption that other investor groups in the company are unaffected by the latter’s decision. Potential conflict of interest exists between shareholders and bondholders, managers and shareholders, majority and minority shareholders. ...Working Capital Structure and Financing Pattern of Mauritian SMEs Kesseven Padachi*; C. Howorth[1]; M. S. Narasimhan[2] and R. Durbarry3 *School of Business, Management and Finance University of Technology, Mauritius La Tour Koenig, Pointe – aux – Sables, Mauritius kpadachi@utm.intnet.mu ABSTRACT The competitive nature of the business environment requires firms to adjust their strategies and adopt good financial policies to survive and sustain growth. Most firms have an important amount of cash invested in current assets, as well as substantial amounts of current liabilities as a source of financing. This paper therefore analyses the working capital structure and financing pattern of small to medium-sized Mauritian manufacturing firms, using primarily secondary data. Structural differences in working capital and the financing pattern of the sample firms are analysed and the results showed significant structural changes over the study period. The research finding revealed disproportionate increase in current asset investment in relation to sales resulting in sharp decline in working capital turnover. The analysis also revealed an increasing trend in the short-term component of working capital financing; in particular trade credit and other payables have financed the major part of working capital. This over-concentration on short-term funds is a reality of the SMEs as they often faced difficulties in raising finance and they are viewed to be informationally opaque....

...CHAPTER-I INTRODUCTION 1.1 MEANING OF WORKING CAPITAL “Working Capital is the Life-Blood and Controlling Nerve Center of a business” Working capital (abbreviated WC) is a financial metric which represents operating liquidity available to a business, organization or other entity, including governmental entity. Along with fixed assets such as plant and equipment, working capital is considered a part of operating capital. Net working capital is calculated as current assets minus current liabilities. It is a derivation of working capital that is commonly used in valuation techniques such as DCFs (Discounted cash flows). If current assets are less than current liabilities, an entity has a working capital deficiency, also called a working capital deficit. A company can be endowed with assets and profitability but short of liquidity if its assets cannot readily be converted into cash. Positive working capital is required to ensure that a firm is able to continue its operations and that it has sufficient funds to satisfy both maturing short-term debt and upcoming operational expenses. The management of working capital involves managing inventories, accounts receivable and payable, and cash. Current assets and current liabilities include three accounts which are of special importance. These accounts represent the areas of the business where managers have the most direct impact: Accounts receivable (current asset) Inventory (current assets), Accounts payable (current liability) ...

...Assignment #2: Business Financing and the Capital Structure Marquis C. Saddler Professor Jason Powers FIN100 December 1, 2013 Business Financing and the Capital Structure Explain the process of financial planning used to estimate asset investment requirements for a corporation. Explain the concept of working capital management. Identify and briefly describe several financial instruments that are used as marketable securities to park excess cash. A corporation having a financial plan in place to estimate its assets investment requirement is important. It’s important because their assets can be used as an advantage for securing loans and can be used to calculate their ability to repay debts. A corporation’s sales are a key compelling force of future asset requirements. As sales steadily increase it creates a need for increase in assets. In other words, asset needs have a propensity to stem from sales increases. For example, if you were to estimate that sales for a corporation will be $40million for a given year, and it is know that in that specific industry that assets have a propensity to be about 40% of sales, then you could estimate that the corporation’s asset requirement will be $16million (40% x $40,000,000). Another good way to estimate asset requirements is to use the percentage-of-sales technique, which is a technique use for forecasting financial data. “Working capital refers to that part of the firm’s capital, which is required for financing short-term or current...

...Recommend a capital structure approach that maximizes shareholder return In order for a company to acquire the necessary resources for its operation, it must have the right composition of capital structure financing. A capital structure is made of up of two types of financing, namely debt and equity. Debt comes in various forms such as bond and long term notes payable and equity can be either common stocks or preferred stock. Both methods of financing have their advantages and disadvantages. It is the responsibility of management to ensure that they choose the right mix of debt and or equity so that there is a balance between the risks and reward. In finding the perfect capital structure in terms of risk/rewards management has to take into consideration interest payment, the company’s cash flows, dividends payment, the expected return on investment and so on. ("Capital structure decision," 2010) Competition Bikes Inc. has several alternatives for its capital structure mix in financing the Canadian expansion. Below is the data for the capital structure mix. Based on the capital structure analysis we see that Competition Bikes Inc has five different alternatives namely: 1. ...1. Discuss the working capital management? Working capital management Working capital management refers to the administration of current assets and current liabilities. Liquidity management involves the planned acquisition and use of liquid resources over time to meet cash obligations as they become due. The firm’s liquidity is measured by liquidity ratio such as current ratio, quick ratio, cash ratio. Financing current asset Current Assets require financing by use of either current funds or long term funds. There are three major approaches to financing current assets. These are: a) Matching Approach Under this approach, the firm adopts a financial plan which involves the matching of the expected life of assets with the expected life of the source of funds raised to finance assets. The firm, therefore, uses long term funds to finance permanent assets and short-term funds to finance temporary assets. Permanent assets refer to fixed assets and permanent current assets. b) Conservative Approach A firm that follows the conservative approach depends more on long-term funds for financing needs. The firm, therefore, finances its permanent assets and a part of its temporary assets with long-term funds. Short-term funds are cheaper than long-term funds. However, short-term funds must be repaid within the year and therefore they are highly risky. C) Aggressive Approach This is a high risky strategy of working capital financing wherein short term finances are utilized...
