Working from Home
Working from the home has become a popular option for many people especially women. With the advance in computer technology, it is possible to do work at home and still keep contact with the business world. Most people find this way of working more comfortable. Despite this some argue that a homely working cannot fully replace priorities of working in an office. So now, I would like to talk about the both sides of working from home. One of the obvious advantage is that one is released from the hassles of traveling to work. You do not have to struggle with traffic jams in morning and evening going to and from work. You can clock in at 9 a.m. and clock out at 5 p.m. just like your ex-colleagues but within the comforts of your home. Most people claim that they waste much time on commuting to work. For instance, in a big cities people every day at least twice face with this problem and often get stuck in traffic almost one-two or even more hours. It has emerged that in a city with a traffic density working from home is preferable. Secondly, while working at home, we can take care of the family’s needs. You are your own master and so you are allowed to plan a schedule with a structure breaks. Get into a routine and you can give yourself a pat on the back of efficiency. Some mothers prefer to work from home because they can look after their children at the same time. Therefore, you can spend more time with your family together in order to strengthen the familial bonds. On the other hand, when you working at home, there is the temptation of taking more breaks than you would in the office. The bedroom is just a staircase away and the television is just a click away. The house looks slightly messy and you decide to do a bit of clearing up here and there. Soon, you have spent two hours on doing housework rather than the work at hand. As a consequence, it will dramatically cost you some productivity. In a nutshell, in spite of the facts remotely working avoids you from traffic challenges and gives you freedom, many people find it difficult to manage time between work and home. Personally, I believe that if you set the proper boundaries, working at home is a breeze and you will wonder why you did not do it earlier. You have your work and friends and your home is in your good hands.

...Working from home: the disadvantage Tina DiNunzio HRP7110 – Human Resources Management Jodi Smith October 23, 2014 Working from home can sound like a dream come true. However, like any job situation there are many disadvantages to home employment that may become apparent over time. For some, this can mean making a few adjustments to make the situation more tolerable. For others, the disadvantages can be so powerful that they can put an end to the home office (Provenzano). As technology, apps and costs bring people to conclude that working from home would be the best situation, it’s very important to consider the disadvantages of working from home, as these are often forgotten. These negative aspects can actually add to work/life pressure and lead to a major increase of job dissatisfaction (Dill-Shackleford). The four major factors to weigh out when considering working from home are: isolation, lack of promotion opportunities, household distractions and self discipline. Anyone who has worked in an office, school or any other workplace becomes accustomed to chatting with coworkers, discussing work projects and other social aspects of the workplace. All of that social interaction is lacking when working alone from home (Park). Many people come to dislike the isolation factor and crave the social interactions they once had. For some, this can be replaced by chatting online with other at-home workers. For others, the isolation can result...

Sunjit isn't alone: in Britain, there are 2.1 million people who work from home at present. In addition, about eight million people spend some time working in the home rather than in an office. This is almost twice as many as ten years ago. This rapidly-growing trend towards working from home is the same in many countries. But what are the reasons for it? The main reason is technological: easy access to broadband and the availability of phone and vidco-conferencing. These enable people to use their home as an office in an efficient and cost-effective way. Other reasons for homeworking are the benefits to both employers and employees: office space is costly, so if an organisation can reduce its workstations, it may be able to move to a smaller site. Employees often work better at home: travelling to work can be very time-consuming and tiring. Many homeworkers save a lot of time if they don't commute and they can start the day fresher and therefore work more efficiently; parents with young children appreciate the flexibility that homeworking allows and are more relaxed. ...Case Study #2 WORKING FROM HOME – IT’S IN THE DETAILS (An article review) 1. Identify and discuss the main problems or concerns mentioned in this case study regarding telecommuting. In your opinion, do most of these problems originate with the company or the employee? • I noticed lots of problems in this article regarding telecommuting. One of these problems is Communication breakdown. Employees under this kind of job begin to feel isolated although it is part of the job, because they are lack of interaction between their managers and colleagues. Even if there were many ways to communicate with them like internet, phones, instant messaging or social medias still much better to communicate with physical appearance. It has a big bearing in the behavior of people inside the organization. It is also hard for the managers to keep in track their people. As everybody say that people in the company is the most important asset, it is important that the managers will assure that they have build a good collaborative environments with them. Another concern is fear no longer part of the organizational ladder, some employees feel that they might be not part of the trends of the company, because they didn’t report or go in the office regularly, compared with the employees in a traditional office setting. Some believe that they need to be in the company to be more productive and learn. We, as part of our organization where we employed, we feel happy everytime that our company...

...appear to finally be getting some respect from their in-office peers, new research finds. While there has long been a perception that employees who work from home don't work as hard as those in an office, perceptions are shifting, according to a study from Dell and Intel. More than half of employees globally now believe that their peers who work from home are just as productive, or more productive, than those in the office. Remote employees also feel like they get more done from the comfort of their own home. Of those who spend any time working from home, half believe they are more productive there than in the office, while 36 percent think they are equally as productive in both locations. Just 14 percent of those surveyed believe they get less done when working from home. Bob O'Donnell, founder and chief analyst at TECHnalysis Research, told the study's authors that many employees today have better equipment and faster Internet connections in their homes than they do in their place of work. "So, we're seeing experiments where more people are working at home more often than they had before," O’Donnell said in the research. At-home employees cite a number of benefits to working outside the office. The study revealed that 30 percent sleep more, 40 percent drive less and 46 percent feel less stressed. [10 Big Companies That Will Let You Work From Home ] However, working from home does have some downsides. Working vs Stay at Home Mothers

...Running  Header:  Working  vs.  Stay  Home  Mothers     1     Research Paper Working vs. Stay Home Mothers Joseph Ochoa Com/172 September 18, 2012 Brenda Caine    WORKING  VS.  STAY  HOME  MOTHERS   2   Children have such an amazing connection with their mothers, it is usually the first word they learn and the name they scream when they are hurt. Working mothers have stormed into the business world at full force in the last 20 years. This has had an impact on the children today, although mothers who stay home have more one on one time with their kids. According to Youngberg, “One significant, reoccurring issue specifically related to a mother’s decision of whether to be active in the workforce or be a stay-at-home mother involves the cognitive effects such a decision might have on children” (2011). While Children get as much attention at daycare as they would at home, stay at home mothers have a bigger impact than working moms. Mothers who work and mothers who stay home have the same busy lifestyle. Mothers need to get groceries, get the kids to baseball practice and better have a husband who is splitting the responsibilities to help take off the pressure. Mothers who work start taking their children to daycare at the young age of six to eight weeks. Heidi Brennan said on the Dr. Phil show “Children do not do well with large separations at a time” (Stay-At-Home Moms Vs. Working Moms, 2012). Because of...

Home Office

...to the cities because that is where a person could find work. The days of the small farmer who grew food for his own family were gone. Big corporations moved in and people were hired in by the hundreds, usually to perform meaningless, dreary, work. Modern society is seeing a new kind of Industrial Revolution where people are no longer stuck in semi-enclosed cubicles or monotonous, robotic-like work. Society is experiencing a different work era where people do not have to drive miles from home on stress- filled highways, only to arrive at work to put in 8 or 9 hour days performing unfulfilling tasks. A job today can mean waking up to fresh coffee, logging onto the computer, stopping in the middle of something to help their child with lunch, and returning to work right in their own homes. A job today can mean flexibility, freedom, creativity, and increased production. Introduction Working from home is not a new concept. People used to conduct their work from home because their property and home was their work. Farmers farmed their land, and the women helped with the housework and tending of the animals. This changed with the Industrial Revolution when work became systematic and concentrated in large cities. According to Joseph Montagna (2008), “the era known as the Industrial Revolution was a period in which fundamental changes occurred in agriculture, textile and metal manufacture, transportation, economic policies and the social...

As Sociology

...sociologist in particular who would tend to agree with the generalisation that working-class underachievement in education is the result of home circumstances and family background. Douglas feels that this educational underachievement is maintained due to what he classifies as ‘poor’ parental attitudes and encouragement towards the education system and its functions. He use’s evidence of poor parental interest with regards to lack of attendance at parent teacher meetings and other functions held by the school which would be in the best interests of the children if their parents attended. He highlights the fact that parents of working-class students have poor rates of attendance at these meetings and thus it comes across as if they are less interested in their child’s educational experiences and opportunities compared to a middle-class child’s parents who do attend. However some would say that Douglas’ view is rather controversial in that he fails to recognise that many of these parents could be at work when these meetings are scheduled or perhaps they are looking after children and are unable to find or afford someone to look after them. So can we really say that working class underachievement is a result of home circumstances and family background as sociologists such as Douglas suggest? Newson and Newson would also agree with the statement that working-class underachievement in education is the result of home circumstances and family background. Through their study of child-rearing...

Change in the Workplace Enviroment

...last 40 years, the nature of employment has changed. The percentage of women in the working area has doubled and working hours are now flexible. Gone are the days when men were the sole bread winner of the family. Shorter Oxford dictionary defined change as a ‘substitution or succession ranging from one thing in place of another to alteration in the state or quality of anything. Change can be large or small, evolutionary or revolutionary, sought after or resisted’ (cited in Hayes 2007 p.3). When change occurs in any environment, it makes us do the unexpected so Institute of Industrial Engineers explained change as ‘something that presses us out of our comfort zone. It is destiny-filtered, heart grown, faith built. Change is inequitable; not a respecter of person’ (IIE, 2010). Also change is often said to be the only thing that is constant in life (Armstrong 2009 p.424). The nature of work can be explained as the way people feel about work and work is the ‘exertion of effort and the application of knowledge and skills to achieve a purpose’ (Armstrong 2009 p.252). Knowing what change and the nature of work is all about; we can now understand what it means to have change in the work environment. This essay will be looking at three various types of changes that occurred in the working environment such as flexibility in the work system, working from home and an increase in women population in the working environment. It will also look at why these changes occurred and the effects of these...

Virtual Work

...Definition: Our textbook defines virtual work as, “employees use information technology to perform their jobs away from the traditional physical workplace. The most common form of virtual work, called telecommuting or teleworking, involves working at home rather than commuting to the office” (McShane & Von Glinow, 2010, p. 22). Summary: In his article, “Unilever Moves Employee Telecommuting to a New Level,” Gary M. Stern writes about how most employers today offer telecommuting and some go beyond that. Unilever is a consumer goods company that in 2010 launched a program titled “Agile Working” that allows its employees to telecommute anytime anywhere. With a 30% participation rate, employees are encouraged to work as long as they are making results. Stern alludes to various advantages of telecommuting such as avoiding commuting, flexible scheduling, and changing work environments. Advantages for the company include cutting global travel costs, office overhead, and achieving a higher level of talent in its employees. “Agile Working” is a flexible virtual work program that offers its employees flexibility, mobility, and challenges them in return (Stern 2012). Discussion: Virtual work is helping employees essentially blur the line between work and home. By letting employees use information technology and do their jobs away from the workplace they can be connected at home, on the road, or in a coffee shop. Research shows advantages of telecommuting include potentially reducing stress...

...helps solve three agriculture issues in China: dated agrarian methods, an overpopulation of rural areas, and an excess of supply of farm labor. But a large population and fast economic development may impede the process. The proportion of rural labor is large and the labor force participation rate is high, while education levels are low. Further, the elasticity of employment is low, while economic growth is much faster than rural labor employment growth. Based on questionnaire data investigating rural labor markets, and utilizing the Markov Chain Method, a forecast is made of when the rural labor shift will stabilize, along with the three employment states' probabilities: (1) working and residing on the home farm, (2) leaving home but working near their hometown, and (3) leaving home and working far from their hometowns. It is projected that the rural labor shift will stabilize in 24 years. The probabilities of the three employment states mentioned above will be 5.9%, 45.4%, and 51.2%, respectively. These findings may contribute to policy decisions regarding city growth patterns, industrial development, and population migration. Book Report

...During the turn of the 19th century, Toronto became part of the industrialization and urbanization phase. With that came the migration of single women to the city, women who left their small towns in order to find paid jobs in the city of Toronto. These were young single women who broke free from the unpaid working women of the past, although their freedom to work came with a price. While these young working girls were trying to make into the world, many discouraged such notions of working in the city factories and shops due to the idea that these women would jepordize their shift into a housewife or motherhood. This idea was known as the girl problem, a delimma that needed to be dealt with because of the cross between exploiting women for cheap labor or creating women who would be healthy, respectable mothers someday. While these women worked to stay alive, they were given low wages, while men who worked were paid much higher. Their freedom as working women who spent their time working during the day and shopping and entertaining themselves was looked upon as suspicious. Due to suspicions of women working, the police developed a way of monitoring what women did in the public sphere. Also an oganizaiton known as YWCA became over-seerers of women, they began to deecide wh was a retspectable women or who was a deviant in society. Many of these women just wanted to have the same freedoms that a single man might have, they face discrimintation in the workplace and were serverly...
