The workplace is an environment that needs to be molded and maintained by company policies and employee professionalism. A good work environment based on professional staff attitudes can help encourage strong teamwork, could be a catalyst to improve productivity and inspire employee behaviors.
There are many false belief about professionalism. Perhaps the most common misconceptions is that one needs to look “professional” to be professional. This is an absurd and outdated idea. Wearing a suit is what politicians, lawyers, used car dealers, corporate criminals, mobsters, and other unethical people do to make you think they are credible, trustworthy, professional, etc. Professionalism is not how you look, it is how you behave. It’s about saying what you mean, doing what you say and getting the job done. Therefore, you cannot tell someone is professional by looking at them and how you dress is not what makes you professional.
It is a common practice for managers and leaders to label things they don’t want to deal with as unprofessional. Examples include swearing, using adult language or occasional arguments. Since employees are human beings, we could expect them to do these things. Dealing with these issues, and many other similar ones, is management’s job, so calling them “unprofessional” in an effort to avoid dealing with potentially unpleasant aspects of the job is unprofessional.
Being professional is about doing the right thing, even if it takes more time or costs more in terms of money or effort. Below is a list of few of the most common unprofessional behavior in production activities and some constructive corrections for each.

Work, employment and society Macquarie University ABSTRACT Australians work comparatively long hours and, in recent years, most of the growth in per capita working hours has come from workers already employed full time. Yet, despite the problems long working hours can cause, this trend has not attracted political attention. Increasingly, the Australian working time regime is a weak regulator of working hours and promotes only limited equality between the working hours of men and women. This article uses responses from the Australian Survey of Social Attitudes 2003 to investigate whether workers’ preferences are in accord with regime institutions. We find that people who work long hours are no less inclined than those who work standard hours or part time to see working hours as a choice and they do this despite more often reporting that their work interferes with family life and that employers expect long hours from them. We contend that seeing long working hours as a choice may be the product of the ‘liberal’ working time regime itself.
