Working Practices

Full-Time

This type of working practice means an employee will work a specified number of hours depending on their contract of employment. The standard hours for this are Monday to Friday 9-5 but this is very much dependant on the industry you are working in and full time work is usually determined by the total number of hours undertaken each week on a recurrent basis e.g. 35, 37, 39 hours would all be considered full time.

Advantages to Employer: the same person is doing the job all of the time and they will therefore be more likely to have a high level of skills and expertise in that job.

Advantages to Employee: ability to earn more benefits relating to job. Regular working pattern which can help with things such as child care. Forward planning for holidays etc.

Disadvantages to Employer: Lack of flexibility in working hours.

Disadvantages to Employee: Also lack of flexibility in terms of needing time of at short notice etc. Less time to spend with family and friend if you are working full time.

Part-Time

Employees will work an agreed number of hours per week; this could mean a reduced number of hours per day or a reduced number of days per week. This will again be dependent on the environment they are working in.

Advantages to Employer: increased flexibility, overheads can be reduced, shared workload amongst staff.

Advantages to Employee: increased work/life balance (see additional notes – Work/Life balance), less likely to become stressed, increased motivation/morale, less likely to lose focus and become bored.

Disadvantages to Employer: may be more costly to employ a number of part-time staff, they are entitled to same benefits to full-time employee on a pro-rate basis.

Disadvantages to Employee: due to demands of work they may end up working more than their actual hours, can be left out of meetings/decisions due to working

This survey was motivated by the desire to understand how working capital is managed by smaller firms in Canada.This includes the management of current assets and current liability accounts, as well as the working capital of the firm in aggregate. Research Methodology: They used a survey instrument that was used in three earlier comprehensive surveys (U.S. 1978, U.S. 1988, Australia 1989) of working capital practices. We ended up with 18 questons that are comparable across four surveys spanning two decades and three countries, wihich enables us to see how working capital practices have varied over time and across international bodies. ...Venepuncture The one skill which I felt I needed more practice with was venepuncture. In university I felt that this skill was learnt too late throughout the course. We only learnt this skill in our management placement at the end of our final year. We practiced for one session in the skills lab with a dummy arm and then had to spend the day with the practice nurse, who signed you off as competent at the skill after 10 venepunctures. I felt this was not enough. As this skill is widely used in primary care it is essential that you get the desired amount of practice. The anatomy and physiology side of venepuncture was not explained for any more than 5 minutes and I believe that people are failing venepuncture at times because they do not have the correct understanding of the veins. When I started my internship at Shotts, I spent a morning with the phlebotomist to get my skills up to date as it had been a while since I had taken blood. I was a little nervous as I remember as a student I pulled the needle too far back and blood came out onto the patients arm and I panicked.
