...Introduction In a world of ever-increasing dependence on technology and the vast amount of information that is available, it is important to look at how this dependence will shape war in the future. P.W. Singer and August Cole present how this might look in the book Ghost Fleet: A Novel of the Next World War. Set in the near future the novel sets a hypothetical scenario that puts the United States at war with China and Russia. The initial conflict is a dramatic loss for America and an eye opener of the over reliance on digital systems, which begs the question, what do we do when the very systems we rely on are used against us? In my reading of the novel, I observed several key takeaways that I believe have great value in successfully fighting future wars and on growth as leaders. This review will discuss three main ideas that were present throughout the book and how to apply them to the present, as well as, mitigate them in the future. Part One will discuss how the authors build a view of technological dependence and how it impacts the conflict within the book. In this part, I will...

...Gordon Low poses with some of the nation's first Girl Scouts. For nearly a century, Girl Scouts of the USA has served as a vital movement in America's history. Come explore the story of the Girl Scouts—and America—through the decades. 1912-1919: Girl Scouts team up to preserve fruits and vegetables to prevent food shortages. Jeannette Rankin, from Montana, was elected to Congress even before women were given the right to vote. Minimum wage laws were being passed and industrial safety codes enacted. The fox trot and tango were the hottest dance steps of the time. But the progressive energy of the country was changed in April 1917, when Germany sank three U.S. ships, and America entered World War I. • On June 10, 1915 the organization was incorporated as Girl Scouts, Inc. under the laws of the District of Columbia • During World War I, girls learned about food production and conservation, sold war bonds, worked in hospitals, and collected peach pits for use in gas mask filters. • After the war came The Golden Eaglet, a feature film about Girl Scouting shown in theaters across the country, and The Rally (later called The American Girl), a monthly magazine for girls published by Girl Scouts. • A troop for physically challenged Girl Scouts was established. • Girls could earn more than 25 badges, including Child Nurse. • The Executive Board inaugurated a fund raising plan to relieve the burden on Juliette Gordon Low, who had been financing operations on her own (she sold her...

...commemorations dedicated to the victims of the September 11 attacks. In the end of a television broadcast, Billy Collins— who was appointed United States Laureate for the years 2001-2003 in June 2001— narrated his poem: “The Names.” “The Names” was presented to the public at the first anniversary of the incident. This poem is about the people whom we lost, and the horrid day which we experienced. The first thing we notice in this poem is the names mentioned within the poem. The final count of the September 11 attacks was 2,749. It is impossible for the author to incorporate all of the names in one poem. He uses all 26 letters to symbolize the names of all the victims; he chooses one name to represent each letter. Here is an example: “I started with A, with Ackerman, as it happened, then Baxter and Calabro, Davis and Eberling, names falling into place as droplets fell through the dark.” Among all the victims, some people were unaccounted for. The author assigns the letter X to represent those missing people: “Let X stand, if it can, for the ones unfound.” During the September 11 attacks, posters and signs were made to show whom the families were looking for. The missing people were announced on TV and radio broadcasts. On each anniversary of the September 11 attacks, we still can see or hear these names on TV, radio, and other occasions. We are again surrounded by these victims, even though they are long gone. The author creates a vivid image in the poem to illustrate...

During the Crimean War, she dramatically reduced the death rates in hospitals by getting rid of the filth and establishing order("Cassandra"). Florence Nightingale inspired others to become the caregiver of the sick and injured resulting in modern day...

... Forexample you imagin a lot of people gathering in a city throwing tomatos at each other just for fun. Have you ever participated in an unusual festival? -Yes: great this is such an interesting experience I'm sure you never fogot that day. -No: no problem I will give you a lot of information about it. I think you might be in charshanbesori. It is held In the last Wednesday of the year. Just as the rest of the world moves forward into the online digital world, there are still various classical traditions from past centuries that retains their popularity with the new younger generation of people. Even as some of these traditions are strange and unusual, they have been held until now. Another example is Halloween. On October 31, in many countries children and adults dress up in unusual costumes. Some become witches or ghosts; others dress up as trees, goats, and in other very unusual costumes. This festival started in Europe and has spread to all parts of the world. However, not all celebrations spread around the world. Every country has its own singular festivals. The first example that I prepared is Festival of Snakes Many people are afraid of snake.. In some parts of the world, snakes are regarded as evil or, at least, dangerous. But, there is one small village in Italy where the people seem to worship snakes. They show their respect and love for snakes with a festival. This festival is held each year in the tiny village of Cocullo, which is surrounded...

...A Guide to Writing the Literary Analysis Essay I. INTRODUCTION: the first paragraph in your essay. It begins creatively in order to catch your reader’s interest, provides essential background about the literary work, and prepares the reader for your major thesis. The introduction must include the author and title of the work as well as an explanation of the theme to be discussed. Other essential background may include setting, an introduction of main characters, etc. The major thesis goes in this paragraph usually at the end. Because the major thesis sometimes sounds tacked on, make special attempts to link it to the sentence that precedes it by building on a key word or idea. A) Creative Opening/Hook: the beginning sentences of the introduction that catch the reader’s interest. Ways of beginning creatively include the following: 1) A startling fact or bit of information Example: Nearly two hundred citizens were arrested as witches during the Salem witch scare of 1692. Eventually nineteen were hanged, and another was pressed to death (Marks 65). 2) A snatch of dialogue between two characters Example: “It is another thing. You [Frederic Henry] cannot know about it unless you have it.” “ Well,” I said. “If I ever get it I will tell you [priest].” (Hemingway 72). With these words, the priest in Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms sends the hero, Frederic, in search of the ambiguous “it” in his life. 3) A meaningful quotation (from the book you are analyzing...

...never ending search for a marital partner only slightly above your level, at least in income, but certainly not prestige. Rumors of war tainting everything. There was that one bright perfect day. In a week you would be back at the Academy. In a week, I'd be heading for Nizhny Novgorod to romance the Count's daughter, the insufferable thing. But on that day, the last good weather before May, we were brothers again. We drank, we danced, we fenced, we talked deep philosophy and shallow gossip, but we were brothers. Brothers again after so long apart, and so soon to be parted. Who could have known that a year later to the day, a fresh-faced Lieutenant of Horse, newly commissioned, and commanding 65 fellows, would lead a charge to silence a platoon of English cannon, those same cannon smashing the Lieutenant and his men to bits instantly, and mothers across Velikaya Rus smashed for the rest of their lives. I sit now at your cenotaph, as I have every year for the last nineteen, which is longer than you lived. I write you this letter while I drink the bottle of Starka I brought you, first my portion, then, when you don't object, yours as well. I remember you, brother, and think of what might have been. ...The term subculture refers to a group of people with their own style and perspectives used to separate them from the larger culture to which they belong. There are and have been different subcultures in history, some were also rivals, with members of different subcultures becoming enemies automatically. The more interesting aspects of subcultures are the philosophical views, fashion style and music they created and how people adopted that lifestyle to fit in and be part of a big group. Gelder proposed several principal characteristics that subcultures portrayed in general: negative relations to work and class, association with their own territory, living in non-domestic habitats, profligate sense of stylistic exaggeration, and stubborn refusal of massification. Hebdige emphasised that the opposition by subcultures to conform to standard societal values has been slated as a negative trait, where in fact the misunderstood groups are only attempting to find their own identity and meaning. The divergence away from social normalcy has unsurprisingly proliferated new ideas and styles, and this can be distinctly observed through the existence of fashion diversity. Ethnicity, race, class and gender can be physical distinctions of subcultures. Furthermore, qualities which determine a subculture may be aesthetic, linguistic, sexual, political, religious, or a mixture of these factors. The expansion of youth styles from subcultures into the fashion market is a real network or infrastructure...

...Many of us take it for granted that we have water available to us at every corner. However, the convenience of bottled water is not worth the destructive outcome on the environment or our wallet When I was a little girl I never worried about where the water I drank came from. We lived out in the woods and we had a fantastic well. Neighbors down the road used to come over to our home and fill up containers of our water. I thought to myself how strange it is that they don’t like the taste of their water. It wasn’t until I got married and moved to Southern California that I realized how lucky I was to grow up with such great tasting pure water. I hated the taste of the water so much that I turned to sugary sodas and juices instead of water. I would go down and buy water but it was inconvenient to have large jugs of water all over the house. Every restaurant I ate at I would ask if they had bottled water or tap. I only lived in California for a year before I moved back to Oregon. However, during that time I became very aware of the taste of water and with all the water-borne diseases talked about in the news, I developed a fear of tap water. Peter H Gleick (2010) explains that the United States (US) has worked hard to provide the best public water system in the world. Not only is it managed and tested regularly, they have very strict federal and state regulations. The public are provided test results on our tap water yearly. The...

...his statement is ambiguous and is open to different thoughts and interpretation. Accordingly, a Government could be problematic due to a lack of justice and democracy within the system; which in turn creates a fascist and totalitarian-type rule whose fundamental belief surrounds the idea of ‘control’. This form of Government is evident within the novel ‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins and the comic ‘V for Vendetta’ by Alan Moore. ‘The Hunger Games’ exposes the detriment of a corrupted, twisted, totalitarian Government controlling a deteriorated society. It is set in post-America with the ominous, terrifying Capitol reigning from the center, ruling 12 districts around it. Similarly ‘V for Vendetta’ is set in London in a world altered by the damages of war, famine and disease hence birthing a fascist, tyrannical Government inspiring fear and control over its citizens by any means possible. It is arguable that both ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘V for Vendetta’ serve as exposé’s of their respective fascist and totalitarian Governments exerting different aspects of control over their societies. Within the ‘Hunger Games’, the all-powerful Capitol rules the society. They possess a large majority of the country’s wealth hence leading to the control over the citizens of Panem. The first type of control is the separation of the districts and enforcement of security within each district in order to maintain the ambiance of domination upon the citizens. Each district is enclosed with high voltage...
