Blog - Wife of a Wounded Marine (Step by Step to Freedom) by Karie Fugett www.cinchouse.com I'm 23 years old and married to an amazing man. He is a Cpl. in the Marine Corps and was injured by an I.E.D. in April of 2006 losing his left lower leg. He is still going through recovery and we aren't sure when it will be over with. We are just taking it a day at a time, doing everything we can to not lose our minds, and refuse to lose hope. I am not perfect and sometimes stress gets the best of me(as you'll see) but I am human, and a young one at that, that is going through very serious things. I'm just doing the best that I can to juggle being my husbands backbone and still have time for myself. I write this blog to vent, to get away, and to share my story.

Blog - Wife of a Wounded Soldier by Cheryl Gansner www.cinchouse.com I am the wife of a severely injured War Wounded Soldier. The phone call on July 29th, 2006 describing the injuries that my husband incurred from an IED changed our lives. We never knew the challenges we would face in rehabilitation and dealing with the Army. We had ups and downs and our marriage has been put to the test. I started out writing a journal the day he was injured. I needed a way to record my thoughts and to process what we were going through. In reaching out to other spouses of injured service members, I decided to share my experience to normalize it; so they did not feel alone. Our story is of pain, sadness, love, triumph, and life changing experiences. Coalition Forces - Canada - Wounded Warriors Fund www.woundedwarriors.ca The fund is designed to deliver quality of life, financial, benevolent and moral assistance through five different streams of support.
1. Wounded Warrior Packs
When an injured soldier leaves the battlefield, they do so quickly and without warning. Sometimes, all they have with them are just the clothes on their back. It is now that they are at their most vulnerable. This program alleviates some of this inconvenience by contributing "quality of life" items to the soldier. Wounded Warrior Packs" contain a variety of items.
2. Padre's Contingency Fund
As part of this program a small Padre's Contingency Fund has been established in Landstuhle, Germany to aid in the morale of the soldiers. This fund was established in November 2006 and provides the care givers in Germany the ability to give immediate assistance for items like clothing, special meal requests (something other than hospital food). This fund is replenished as needed.
3. Fisher House Endowment:
The Fisher House is a unique program (similar to the renowned Ronald MacDonald House charity) that supports the families of those receiving critical medical care by providing free accommodation, near the hospital in Landstuhle Germany.
While the Fisher Houses were started to provide assistance to the families of wounded U.S. service people, they have opened their doors to Canadians. Fisher Houses rely on donations to subsist and the Wounded Warriors fund provides goods and services to the Fisher House in Germany in support of Canadian families. These donations will reoccur as the need and opportunity arises.
4. Awareness
The Wounded Warriors Fund assists on behalf of all wounded Canadian Forces (CF) service members (where required) in gaining entitled benefits from federal departments and works to assure life issues and matters are resolved.

Connection and Support - Find other warriors and families experiencing life after war (Not Alone) www.notalone.com Not Alone started in 2008 when a group of warriors and professionals discovered a significant gap in the government's capacity to help warriors and their families come home from war. Not Alone draws on a unique group of individuals with personal experience in the Iraq and Afghanistan war. We have been in your shoes. We have struggled to regain our lives and to find the new normal at home. Professionals, warriors and experts have been vital in helping to bring the Not Alone vision into reality. Entertainment (Recovery Recreation Opportunities) - Yellow Ribbon Fund* www.yellowribbonfund.org Long-term rehabilitation at any hospital is not easy. Family and community support helps a patient tremendously in their recovery. Most injured service members at Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval Hospital are away from their own communities, with only a few family members around and some with none. Many are amputees. These active duty service members' primary responsibility is to successfully accomplish their recovery mission. That mission still leaves many of them a substantial amount of free time.

Yellow Ribbon Fund volunteers arrange opportunities for the patient to enjoy our community, just as members of their local community would do if Walter Reed were there, instead of here. We take them to local sporting events, invite them to join us in hunting, fishing, and other sports. We take them and their families to a variety of other events in our community. When the Government does not cover the cost of a family visit, the Yellow Ribbon Fund arranges free hotel rooms and apartments. Family Support - Salute America's Heroes* www.saluteheroes.org Disabled American Veterans of the War on Terror must struggle every day to overcome life-changing sacrifices such as the loss of a limb, significant burns, and the reality of being in a wheel chair.

The Coalition to Salute America's Heroes was created to provide a way for individuals, corporations and others to support our troops by helping severely wounded and disabled Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans and their families rebuild their lives.

The mission of The Coalition to Salute America's Heroes is to help the people who have given so much on our behalf overcome these obstacles and resume a productive and fulfilling life through programs targeted to their specific needs.

We are helping these brave men and women and their families rebuild their lives in many ways. For some, it’s paying bills because the financial strains of the adjustment are so overwhelming. For others, it’s a computer so they can continue their education. And for some it’s as simple as getting out and going to a concert to break to monotony of rehabilitation. There are five key programs targeted to the specific needs of returning heroes:

Emergency Financial Aid - Direct financial aid to disabled American veterans and their families in crisis.
Family Support Network – Including concerts, sporting events, special outings to help reunite families; and therapeutic day camp for children of wounded soldiers.
Wounded Hero Career Network - Programs that assist wounded Vets (and their spouses) in transitioning from their career in the military to exploring options in the civilian workplace.
Homes for Wounded Heroes - Disability-adapted homes that are nearly cost-free for wheelchair-bound and blind veterans.
Road to Recovery Conference - An all-expense paid educational and service event for wounded heroes and their families

The Coalition to Salute America's Heroes is supporting our troops and meeting the needs of hundreds of wounded and disabled American veterans of the War on Terror, one hero at a time.

New Directions is a licensed, long-term drug and alcohol treatment program founded by three formerly homeless veterans. It has provided food, shelter, and rehabilitation since 1992 and provides services to more than 800 homeless veterans a year through four locations.

Military Installation - Warrior Transition Battalion
Website - various installations have their own specific websites
Warrior Transition Battalion(WTB) is a unit specializes in taking care of wounded, injured and ill Soldiers of the United States Army. We call them Warriors in Transition (WT). This is a special unit through which WTs receive necessary healing and time to heal. This unit ultimately ensures WTs’ smooth transition either back into the military or into the civilian life. In order to achieve this goal, WTB provides three layers of assistance. Squad leaders assist WTs with command and control issues. Nurse Case Managers manage and regulate WTs’ medicine and medical appointments issues. Physical Care Managers (doctors) monitor WTs’ healing process closely and provide prompt diagnoses. In addition to the “TRIAD” assistance, WTs also receive emotional support from the social workers assigned to each company and spiritual guidance and healing from unit chaplains. WTB works very hard to ensure smooth transition via holistic approach to their healing.

Military Installation - Wounded Warrior Barracks - SemperMax website Here you will see motivating Warriors who are Always Doing their Best. Tim A Maxwell, a LtCol in the USMC, was wounded in Iraq in 2004, when a mortar round exploded and inserted shrapnel into my brain. He writes:

I have learned a lot. I have learned that medicine is very complicated, confusing, and addicting.
I have learned that paperwork, such as PEB, VA, and Social Security, is brutal. But most of all, I have learned that being alone is the worst. Those who stay in their service, regardless of their frustration, are better than those who live alone.

So, I have come up with this web site. Even though we cannot all be together physically, we can be together mentally.
If you are doing great, share your story. Give others some hope!
If things are not going well, read and learn how others have dealt with the same type of situation. You can also send me an email, and I will try to put you in contact with the right person.

The bottom line....we all need to stay in the fight TOGETHER!

Phone Cards - Homefront Hugs* website Phone cards are needed everyday, especially for our wounded. Our wounded troops need to talk to loved ones while so far away in rehab! Stuff a calling card into a card....and send a nice wish to our longterm wounded

Since the program began, the Veterans of Foreign Wars has provided deployed servicemembers and hospitalized veterans with millions of minutes of free phone time. The unique program is part of VFW National Military Services, which includes other initiatives that boost morale, aid struggling military families and encourage troop support.

Recognition (Memorial Wall) - The American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial www.avdlm.org For the first time in our nation’s history, we will build a monument to honor and pay tribute to some of America’s most courageous heroes. The American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial will celebrate those men and women who may be broken in body—but never in spirit.

As these veterans face a life for which no one can prepare, so must their families and friends. The American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial will also honor veterans’ loved ones and caregivers—individuals whose heroic devotion is a source of strength for those striving to heal.

Recognition (Pedestal) - Blue Star Riders* website The eagle pedestal is given to our wounded Warriors who sacrificed their mobility and or those that choose one instead of a cane (Eastern Oklahoma Woodcarvers Association). Blue Star Riders wants to make sure every soldier we meet is honored.

Recognition (Presentation Cane) - Eastern Oklahoma Woodcarvers Association website The Eagle Cane is a project that originated by the Eastern Oklahoma Woodcarvers Association to supply post-9/11 veterans, who have sustained combat related injury, with a presentation cane. Disclaimer: The presentation cane while not fully functional as a mobility aid is an expression of respect, honor and appreciation of a patriotic duty preformed by the recipient. Each cane is unique in design.

The pilot project was launched with the help of philanthropist Ronald A. Katz, a well-known inventor and UCLA Medical Center board member, who recognized that providing excellent care to injured soldiers need not be limited to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Armed Services. Rehabilitation - Therapy Trainer (Interactive physical therapy equipment for Wounded Warriors) www.therapytrainer.com Our company believes, we must do everything in our power to help the injured Veteran. We know the bikes cannot change the circumstances these Veteran’s find themselves in, but we have a mission to help in anyway we can. Our research and development team is working daily to develop new products to accommodate the changing needs of the Wounded Hero’s. We welcome calls and e-mails from anyone who has a need or a specific request for a modification that would better suit a particular need.

The TherapyTrainer will not only be a significant tool in their physical recovery, it also has the ability to keep the lines of communication open between the doctors, physical therapists, and patients. So many of our returning soldiers are located hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles away from the hospital at which they received their treatment. Returning to the doctor/physical therapist when a problem arises is difficult. With the logging software, the doctor/physical therapist has the capability to view details of their home physical therapy routine and make suggested changes. When a trip back to the hospital is necessary, the detail the medical staff is able to see by viewing the logs of at home physical therapy can make the visit more productive, achieving better results in less time.

Many military men and women are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with injuries that require extended hospitalization. The struggles they endure to leave the hospital and return to their family, have been well documented. During physical therapy in the hospital settings, the patients are able to encourage and motivate each other. The bonds they create are irreplaceable! Once they reach their physical goals, they go home to their families and they no longer have physical contact with the ones who were invaluable to their recovery. Many of these veterans suffer depression and setbacks that require them to return to the hospital.

The lines of communication do not end with the medical professionals. Helping these Veterans get access to the TherapyTrainer’s, would enable them to maintain the relationships developed in therapy. They can meet online everyday and workout together just as they did in the hospital. This feature allows them to keep the healing bonds intact that helped them become mentally and physically stable enough to leave the hospital.

This machine is for all who suffer from physical injures, but can help the family at home to heal as well. Our TherapyCycle PC will allow them to get on-line and cycle and interact with the patient. They can walk and talk together in reality worlds or just play games together. In this way they are both staying active and staying, giving loved ones a way to actively participate in their recovery. Call for a military discount.

And while art is a recognized tool for helping people deal with trauma, we want our kit recipients to also use our kits and think about their futures. Somewhere, sometime, someone will look over the shoulder of one our artists and ask, "Wow, you really drew that?" Imagine how encouraging that will be.

Caregiver Support Organizations |
Family Caregiver Alliance www.caregiver.org/caregiver FCA is a public voice for caregivers. Our pioneering programs--information, education, services, research and advocacy--support and sustain the important work of families nationwide caring for loved ones with chronic, disabling health conditions.

Find other warriors and families experiencing life after war (Not Alone) www.notalone.com Not Alone started in 2008 when a group of warriors and professionals discovered a significant gap in the government's capacity to help warriors and their families come home from war. There needed to be a confidential online community where those warriors could congregate to help each other. Our personal experiences with war trauma led us to reach out to those that need help.

Not Alone has formed partnerships with various organizations to create new ways across the nation to help those returning from war.

We've been through the experience of war and returning home from war and hope that our persistence, experience and passion can help others in their journey as well. We understand. We get it.

To accomplish our mission, we have designed special programs that allow and encourage community involvement. We welcome you to read through our website to learn more about how we help and how you can too.

Immediate Needs Grants - Hope For The Warriors™ is prepared to help provide financial assistance once a notice of very severe injury is made. A Warrior's Wish - It is with great pleasure that Hope For The Warriors™ grants wishes to severely injured service members in an effort to restore hope in the eye of a hero. While disabilities are not a barrier in life, they can create some monumental hurdles. Priorities change and sometimes the small important wishes for life must be set aside. Beyond meeting immediate physical and emotional needs, a Warrior's Wish fulfills a desire for quality of life beyond recovery and a quest for life gratifying endeavors. Whether realizing a dream to go hunting, ride a bike again or own a home adapted to their specialized needs, it is the mission of Hope For The Warriors™ to see that Wounded Warriors and their families are actively engaged.

Warrior House - Recognizing that wounded warriors with spouses and their families also benefit from the camaraderie and shared experiences of others, Hope For The Warriors™ has founded the Warrior House™ program. The University of Toledo welcomes you to join the “Star Spangled Banner” songfest event held on March 28th at the Savage Arena at 5pm. Songfest is a grand philanthropic tradition that can be described as a song and dance performance. This year, proceeds raised from the event will go toward the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization whose mission is to honor and empower Wounded Warriors. The Wounded Warrior Project has helped thousands of family and service members with medical, housing, along with numerous other types of support. This year’s event is split into three different competitions: Men’s Women’s, and Co-ed groups, which are composed of many Greek, Academic, Religious, and other UT organizations. The University of Toledo takes much pride in these events, raising awareness and donations toward a worthy cause. Current sponsors of Songfest include Blue Key National Honor Fraternity and Mortar Board National Honor Society, both of which hold their recognition and tapping ceremonies during the event. Each organization participating in Songfest was challenged to come up with a fundraising goal to go above and beyond what they raised last year supporting children diagnosed with terminal cancer, which was a grand total of $25,000. This non-profit organization was founded in 2003 by John Melia. It all got started when Melia started putting together backpacks with food, games, books, and other items to give to the wounded veterans in former Bethesda Naval Hospital. For all of the hard work that Wounded Warrior Project does, I want to try and help them gain more money so they can help more veterans. This Organization helps the wounded veterans by giving them a place to stay and food and water. There are many veterans out in the world today who need help and who are struggling to survive. Wounded Warriors Project Analysis

...The wounded warriors project is an awesome organization that has made a huge impact on helping wounded warriors live a full healthy life all around america. Wounded warriors organization was found by Steven Nardizzi and John Melia in Jacksonville, FL 2003. They started WWP because they wanted to make other people aware of the vertarines and how they wanted to restore the wounded warriors to their former self and help them so they can walk and use the parts they lost with artificial body parts. The wounded warriors project help people who were in the Army, Navy and those types of programs but they help the ones who have been injured in a war and are pretty much crippled. For example Deron Santiny was tossed by a improvised explosive device and it gave him several injuries such as a concussion, whiplash, ringing in his ears, and he had a spine injury and so the wounded warriors project helped him get back on his feet and he is now inspired by vietnam veterans that have paved the way for soldiers like himself....

Fine Arts: Marble Statue of a Wounded Warrior

...Fine Arts The Marble Statue of a Wounded Warrior is a Roman statue from A.D. 138-181; it is a copy of a Greek statue that was cast around 460-450 B.C. The subject matter of this statue is a warrior in the midst of battle and as the name indicates the warrior is wounded despite the subject not appearing wounded at first glance. The ancient Greek statue depicts a Greek war hero in a contrapposto position caught in a stance of action – the way he is immortalized in the statue directly correlates with Ancient Greek art of its time period and the belief that human body features should be idealized. By evaluating several elements we will be able to see how the Ancient Greek’s act of idolizing the warrior’s physical features is further illustrated in our modern day portrayal of the statue. We will review such things as the statue itself, the history of which it originates from, and the modern day depiction of the statue as viewed from the analysis of the museum’s placement and description of the work of art. As one walks into the corridor where the Wounded Warrior stands, his presence is immediately felt. The frame of reference for us as the viewers is pre-determined. The statue seems to be on a downward slope, his body is at a slight angle where his left foot stands in front of a bent right foot with his head looking down. As we grow closer to the statue, our position in correlation to him is inferior – we are meant to be looking up at him and, as the original probably would have...

Prjoect Plan

...Project Plan This project, Rock ‘n’ Reggae, is an outdoor concert event that will benefit a great cause. This concert will have artists such as Black Eyed Peas, Rhianna, and Wyclef Jean and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Wounded Warrior Foundation, to help the veterans of war that may be in a financial or medical hardship. Rock ‘n’ Reggae is designed to be an outlet for all citizens across the nation to see and enjoy a great show. The concert will be held at the Marley Memorial Field, a high school, located in the center of the city of Lakeland, Florida. The location was chosen because the younger generations do not have the opportunity to see a concert event. Also, it is a great location because it is centered between the larger cities of Tampa and Orlando, and it also in central Florida, making it easier for those all over the state to attend. The stadium can hold up to 8000 people as well as more in front of the stage, but this will be reserved for those contest winners, online as well as radio contest winners. The area will also be for the media, news cameras, and radio station representatives. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |...

Wounded Warrior Project: The Existentialist Theory Of Ethics

...The existentialist theory of ethics believes that everyone is responsible for making themselves who they are, as explained by the famous philosopher Sartre – “’being precedes essence’: each human being makes himself what he is, creating, and recreating continually, himself and his world” (Rapport and Overing, 2003). Existentialism believes that the only issue is if you are in bad faith – the perception you give others is not who you truly are, your “being for self” and “being for others” are not similar. Being for self is the judgements which can be placed on you due to your previous behaviour, and being for others is the impression you leave behind to others based on your actions. In the case of the Wounded Warrior Project, the directors were...

What stays with you latest and deepest? of curious panics, Of hard-fought engagements or sieges tremendous what deepest remains? 2 O maidens and young men I love and that love me, What you ask of my days those the strangest and sudden your talking recalls, Soldier alert I arrive after a long march cover’d with sweat and dust, In the nick of time I come, plunge in the fight, loudly shout in the rush of successful charge, Enter the captur’d works—yet lo, like a swift running river they fade, Pass and are gone they fade—I dwell not on soldiers’ perils or soldiers’ joys, (Both I remember well—many of the hardships, few the joys, yet I was content.) But in silence, in dreams’ projections, While the world of gain and appearance and mirth goes on, So soon what is over forgotten, and waves wash the imprints off the sand, With hinged knees returning I enter the doors, (while for you up there, Whoever you are, follow without noise and be of strong heart.) Stolpestad

...Analysis and interpretation of “Stolpestad” By Jeppe Bender Lassen In "Stolpestad" from 2008 the author, William Lychack, deals with life in the postmodern society through his main character Stolpestad. A middle-aged police officer not able to settle in the chaotic and confusing postmodern world. What starts out as a routine task of putting down a wounded dog ends up becoming a journey for spiritual awakening, as Stolpestad comes to some life-changing realizations. The story is set in a dull and gloomy town in which Stolpestad grew up and has inhabited ever since. The narrator provides several signs that the town is a place almost completely desolated from excitement. This is for example evident in lines 3-4: “…like a clock ticking all these bored little pent-up streets and mills and tenements away.” Life of the town is decaying. Nothing seems to be done to prevent this from happening. As goes for the case of Stolpestad’s life. Stolpestad leads a quiet and trivial life as a police officer – a job in which the main constituents of a daily schedule are insignificant routine tasks. To fill out the remaining parts of his life he hangs out at bars finding comfort for the lack of substance in his life at the bottom of endless pints of beer. One might almost describe Stolpestad’s trivial life as a never-ending déjà vu, where the days are just passing by indifferently. When Stolpestad is called out to the boy with the injured dog however, he suddenly gets an opportunity of moving...

Warriors Darkest Hour

...Preface: The Warrior Series: Sad to say, I have read a few of them when I was deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq. That’s because it’s what they would send me in care packages along with other goodies I liked. But that was another time and story in my life I care to put behind me. So, it has been expressed to me in the past that the ending to the first series was a little weak and I agree. The whole Tigerstar getting batted aside by some little wiener cat from Twolegplace rather than getting his ASS handed to him by Firestar was kind of lame in their eyes. Neither one liked it when a new “Bad Guy” shows up right at the last second and tries to take the place of a long standing relationship with a hated arch enemy, like you’re supposed to be afraid of this guy all of the sudden. Nope. The original Warriors series, released from 2003 to 2004, consists of six books, Into the Fire: Fire and Ice: Forest of Secrets: Rising Storm: A Dangerous Path and The Darkest Hour. Since The Darkest Hour is the last book I read in Iraq, I had to go to the library on Camp Pendleton to look over the book one more time before I started this. The top section in Italic is straight from the final battle in the 6th book, The Darkest Hour, which is my starting point for what you will read below. Anyway, not a great bit of writing on my part, especially the abrupt ending, but according to both my daughter’s, they thought it was a good attempt & agreed that if the story ended the way I put...

The Voices Told Me so

...The Voices Told Me So It had been yet another long day. It was about 11pm, so I started playing the new computer game which I’d downloaded about a week ago, I was so addicted. In fact the last 6 days of my life had practically revolved around this game. There was something about the game that drew me in. It was set in a dark forest next to a river; the game had quite an eerie feel and was quite gruesome as you had to kill everyone that stood in your way in order to get to the next level.    It was 3:25 in the morning, my mum had told me to get off the computer hours ago but I don’t tend to listen to her much now anyway, she as well as everyone else was so calm even though there were disappearances around our town. I kept telling my mum to be careful, especially when walking to the shop but she just looked at me as if I was crazy. I wouldn’t leave my room though. Oh no. I mean, nothing can happen to me whilst I’m stored away in my room, right? I hadn’t had slept properly for a couple days but as tired as I was, I was too afraid to sleep, I would just toss and turn in my bed all night just so I didn’t have to endure what would happen when I closed my eyes. You see, I’d been having the same dream over and over for the past week now. In this dream I’d see a road, a long dark road that seemed to never end. And it was like I was an untouchable spirit floating above the image of myself walking along this road until I came to a stop. And suddenly my spirit would race like a lightning...

Thankyou

...Diary of Signaller Ellis Silas – diary extract : May 1915 1 MAY ENLARGE ‘At the Water hole’, from Silas' book Crusading at Anzac We are relieved from the firing line – the battle still raging; every nerve strained. Australians have done splendidly, holding a very difficult position; have been much troubled with snipers. Am glad I have done my duty. First wash for a week – go down to the Water Hole, which is always covered by Turkish snipers – it was safer in the trenches than here – all around this spot are dead and wounded who have been hit when dodging round this corner; however, one must drink, even if the price be Death. Make dug-outs in our rest camps, but men are continually caught by the snipers. Many are commencing to suffer from dysentery, though the spirit of the men is splendid, always ready for a joke. Signaller Walker just hit in the mouth – we considered we were out of range in our dug-out but the snipers are everywhere. Sergeant of the machine gun is writing a very amusing diary, full of humour; I wish I had his spirit. In the dug-out just above me a poor chap is lying very ill but has asked me to say nothing to the medical officer as he does not want to get sent away in the middle of the fun, as he calls it. Of such stuff are soldiers made – I think if I were in his place I’d be glad of an excuse to get out of this Hell, though I don’t think I should ever have forgiven myself if I had not come. I hear that to-morrow we are going to make a charge – the Turks...
