When it comes to year round schooling, many people have debated on whether or not it is the right decision for the students. There is two sides to the argument. One is that summer vacations hurt the children’s learning experience because every year when they come back, they have to re-learn what they have forgotten over the summer. Another side to the argument is that having a summer vacation is essential to growing up. School systems and communities have come up with many different options, and by the end of this paper you can decided which would best suit you. Through research we have found that since back in the 1800’s they have handled schooling in many different ways. Back then schools lacked a long summer vacation we are used to today. Their schooling was handled by them going to school from December to March, have a break, and then return mid-May to August. Other schools in this era had children from working families attend an eleven month school year, it served as a safe and inexpensive place for them to be. Since the 1900’s school districts around the country have offered a longer school year, involving shorter spread out vacations. As opposed to our system now, schooling around the world differs from ours here in America. They are not used to a short school year followed by a long vacation. Instead, children in countries such as Europe, Asia, and South America go to school more days per year, as well as more hours per day. On one side of the debate there is the families and communities that would like year-round schooling. Communities believe that it would save on costs for buildings that go unused during the summer vacations, they believe since fewer students would be attending at any one time they would save money on textbooks and equipment, and since they believe there will be fewer students it would also affect the amount of teachers. Some research suggests that year-round schooling is better for the students. It showed positive effects for those students who are struggling academically, or those children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many teachers, parents, principles, and children believe the long summer vacations hurt them academically, wastes parts of their education, and ultimately wastes tax money. A big topic of conversation is that students get bored over summer break, causing less activity and motivation. Parents find it less stressful to have year-round schooling because they will not have to worry about what their kids are doing over the summer while they are at work. It gets harder to find safe activities they can be a part of for summer, winter, and spring vacations, as well as other random holidays throughout the year that most parents do not get off from work. The other side of the argument is that long summers are vital for kids to grow up. It is something students look forward to the entire year. Some people believe that if schools stay open all year, in the long run it will end up costing almost ten percent more per year due to maintenance. It could also have a bad effect on summer programs that are already struggling financially such as the art programs, sports, and many other state funded programs. They say that the younger the student, who may not be psychologically developed, will not see the benefit of being in school all year which in turn can cause aggression and behavioral problems in the classroom. Another bad effect of year round schooling is that, students need a break. If students do not get the time they are used to relax and spend time with friends and family, they could come to resent school and have bad attitudes about learning and ultimately their own education. They have come up with alternatives for schooling, where the students still get plenty of vacation time but I is spread out over the year instead of a three consecutive month period. The system that seems to work best when dealing with this conflict would be known as the “45-15” type. This alternative is set up with students going in nine-week terms with alternating three week vacations through-out the year. They also start the students in what they call “waves”, rather than all at the same time. S when vacations hit not all of the students are out at one time. This causes schools to be less crowded during the school day, but is still attending to the same amount of students. This choice can seem very complicated, but it has been proven to work successfully if done right. A less popular choice is when schools break up their three month summer vacation and give it to students sporadically through the year.
This has turned out to be a topic that people have been discussing and deciding upon for many, many years. There seems to be no one solution, because not very parent agrees on what is best for their children. Although both sides have valid arguments, all the options seem like they could work if the student, community, and school system do the best of their ability to make it work. Change is never easy, but for some people it is necessary to experience a better life, so if there are some students who benefit from year round schooling then that is the option they should go for, but I could also say the same about the opposite side. There is no right or wrong choice, it all just depends upon what is best for the student in the end.

Year Round School

...Is year-round school a good fit for students? Before making a decision, the pros and cons of this educational system need to be reviewed. Students who go to a year-round school go to class the same number of days as kids on a conventional school plan. What’s the difference? A year-round school timetable is spread out more evenly throughout the year. “The traditional calendar is divided into nine months of instruction and three of vacation during the summer. Year-round calendars break these long instructional/ vacation blocks into a pattern of sixty days of instruction followed by twenty days of vacation.” (CA Dept of Education). Students who receive more frequent breaks don't receive a customary ten to twelve-week summer break. Removing any kind of long break from school can enhance a child’s educational accomplishment. Long summers are known for "summer slide," or the decay of cerebral abilities and loss of information throughout the longer break. Summer-slide is different across grade levels, subject matter and family income, according to the National Summer Learning Association. However, it still affects all children in some way. If a student does not have a long break, it helps prevent summer learning loss. Summer learning loss is a significant issue for children. All children – rich or poor - experience a slide in math over the summer. The slide is different for everyone. Despite the fact that it may appear fun, an extended summer break can frequently prompt weariness...

Year-Round To School

Try to conjure an clear image of what a student who goes year-round to school might look like: grotesque. Not only are students already tired and sleep deprived, they are yearning for snow-days and summer break. Thus, changing the school system to year around would certainly discourage, tire, and be an inconvenience for many attendees. Many educators and parents could certainly agree that students are overloaded and at the point of implosion, or explosion. For example, in curriculum students are increasingly...

All Year Round School Vs School Year Essay

...What would happen if school was going all year? Some people think it would be better if school went all year long and it is up for debate. School going all year long is better than going for parts of the year because students wouldn’t “lose” their knowledge,it would be better on the teacher, and there would be more breaks. Everyone has felt the feeling of summer ending and going back to school. The first day of school a student might feel like they forgot all the knowledge they got from the previous school year. If there was year round school then they wouldn’t have that feeling. They will be more likely to remember what they learned from a past school year and use the information to their advantage. The students will do better on the tests because they know the information. The students need the first few weeks of school to even begin to take in knowledge. They went from playing in the sun to sitting at a desk for hours. Those first few weeks of school would have been wasted because they are not as focused. That is wasted time for both student and teacher. Teachers put a lot of work into each lesson they prepare for their students. Some students...

Hypothetical Scenarios: School Year-Round School

...Hypothetical Scenario: Your school is considering going to school year round. If school was to go year round there could be multiple of stuff that could make it displeasing for the students and teachers. First is problem in this scenario is summer break, then there is the problem of kids skipping half days because the electives aren’t as important as core classes and also the problem of students having a great breaks from learning math, english, science, and history during the school year. To me in my life taking summer break will be a bad thing, not only for me but also for my dad because he relies on me for the three months of no school to increase the amount of work/money he gets which affects my family a lot. I know many teens who do the same with their family, three weeks off after every nine weeks of school would be pretty cool I’d admit but it wouldn’t be enough to help family businesses like construction like what I do. After all it doesn’t take three weeks or four weeks to finish a big apartment building that my family works on every summer break, or doing field work. The amount of time off is not great enough for all those who do hard labor, in a city it would be more fitting of this school schedule but in a place in montana where...

First, year-round schooling is a waste of money. In the summer it is very hot and to not be sweating a bunch in class to stay concentrated, you would need to have air conditioning. To have air conditioning running the whole summer it would cost a lot of money to do that. But, when you have a school year that gets summer off, you only have to pay a little bit for heating. Second, when you go to year-round schools you can't go do summer activities. When school conflicts with summer you can't do summer activities such as camping, paddle boarding, and other fun activities you need no...

Year round school is in the best interest of communities because it saves money, increases learning, and is a comfortable schedule for students. First, we need to establish why the nine month schedule was established in the first place? The nine month schedule was made when the U.S. had mostly agriculture in the communities and the schedule let the kids be able to help their parents on the farms over the summer when they were needed. Now that most communities aren’t rural anymore this schedule is no longer needed. Next, the year round schedule saves money. How is this possible? This is possible because with the year round schedule there could be what...
