Trapping myself in my own cage, A cage that they created that soon becomes my home, And then she came uninvited, The moment our eyes met, I saw my own reverie. Right then I realize, I was not the only one who’s suffering from pain, That idea made me bitterly laugh, We’re both pitiful in some ways Then it just happened, Us needing each other. ...HIST101-1304B-10 Modern American History 1950 to the 21st Century The Space Race The Space Race began on October 4, 1957 when the Soviet Union launched a satellite into space named Sputnik. This satellite began its journey attached to a Soviet intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). Sputnik was the first piece of man made equipment ever sent into orbit around the Earth. The launch of Sputnik showed the United States that they were behind the power curve when it came to exploring space. The other thing that the Sputnik launched showed the United States was the power and range of the Soviet’s R-7 ICBM. It seemed that the Soviet Union was capable of delivering nuclear warheads to U.S. soil. This encouraged the U.S. military to take a particularly hard look into the weapon advancements that the Soviets were making. By 1958 the United States launched its own satellite into space, known as Explorer I. It was designed by the U.S. Army and over watched by a rocket scientist, Wernher von Braun. In 1958 President Eisenhower created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, or more commonly known as NASA. In addition to signing the public order which created NASA, President Eisenhower also signed two more orders that would ensure the United States would not fall behind in gathering intelligence via space again. The first was used by the U.S. Air Force, which focused on using space for military operations. The second named Corona was a collaboration with the CIA, U.S...

...Introduction into the history of Communications Technology Much of technology today started firstly as military mechanisms. Wars put a colossal demand upon a nation’s resources. These resources include everything from materials to military personnel. As soldiers are deployed off to battle, the people left behind must keep the nation’s infrastructure from collapsing. This puts engineers and scientist under tremendous pressure to develop the systems necessary to combat the opposition effectively in warfare. Examples of such are Alan Turing and Wernher von Braun. Alan Turing was the first to suggest of using a computer to do things that were too hard for a person to do. During World War II Alan Turing worked on breaking German ciphers. This was achieved by using cryptanalysis to break the Enigma code which was later used to decipher all German signals. Wernher von Braun He was one of the developers of the V-2 rocket, these where the first rockets to penetrate space. He also developed the Saturn V rocket which took Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the moon in 1969. In a way wars tend to have beneficial effects on economic and technological development. In general, wars tend to accelerate technological development to adapt tools necessary to solve specific military needs. Later, these military tools may evolve into non-military devices. Examples of such mechanisms are: The Radar The radar was initially designed my Sir Robert...

...out of space was because they were in competition with Russia. We wanted to get to the moon first to prove we were more worthy than the Russians, who'd scared everybody with Sputnik I, the first artificial satellite, and Yury Gagarin, the first human in orbit. Russia was achieving things out of space that the United States weren’t. President John F. Kennedy refused to keep coming in second so he helped fund extra money to NASA and insisted that they try to land a man on the moon before the decade was over. NASA didn’t want the President looking crazy making promises that he couldn’t keep to the Country so they tried their hardest to come up with the best spaceship and the best plan to get us on the moon. On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to fly in space, even though he didn’t quite actually make it to the actual moon that was more than the NASA had ever traveled. On July 21st, 1969 achieved their goal of landing Americans on the moon. At 2:56 UTC, Neil Armstrong became the first astronaut ever to walk on the face of the moon. Additional flight objectives included scientific exploration by the lunar module, or LM, crew; deployment of a television camera to transmit signals to Earth; and deployment of a solar wind composition experiment, seismic experiment package and a Laser Ranging Retro reflector. During the exploration, the two astronauts were to gather samples of lunar-surface materials for return to Earth. They also were to extensively...

...survive space travel. To have the Russians making all the “first” in space missions did not sit well with Americans and began to push the government into overtime to do the same. On January 1958 the U.S. launched their very own satellite called Explorer 1, designed by the US Army under the direction of rocket scientist Wernher von Braun. In the same year President Dwight Eisenhower signed a public order to form the NASA program for space exploration. This program also brought two security programs to protect NASA, the CIA and the second was the Air Force’s program to put military in space. In 1959, the Soviet space program took another step forward and sent a probe to the moon. Backing the first probe to the moon, they put the first man, Yuri Gagarin, into orbit Earth. ...Darrell C. Johnson Jr. History 101 08/02/2015 Unit 1- Individual Project The Space Race In the middle of the 20th century the world’s two super power, United States and the Soviet Union were in a competition known as the space race. The two super countries clashed for superiority of technology, military firepower, and its politics. The superiority was seen as necessary for national security and ideological superiority. By the mid-1950s, the United States and Soviet Cold War had taken its effects on both countries, because of this competition and the threat of nuclear weapons, espionage and counter-espionage between the two countries, the Korean War and a war of words and philosophy’s carried out in the media. All of these tensions continued throughout the space race, tensions heated up even more with events like the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961, the Cuban missile crisis of 1962 and a war in Southeast Asia. On October 4, 1957, Sputnik, a Soviet R-7 intercontinental ballistic missile launched. Sputnik was the world’s first artificial satellite and first man-made object to be placed in orbit. The launch came as a surprise, but wasn’t pleasant to Americans. Space was seen as the next frontier, in the United States. This demonstration of the power of the R-7 missile seemed capable of delivering a nuclear warhead into U.S. air space. Which made gathering intelligence about Soviet military activities particularly urgent. The U.S. launched its own satellite...

... Patrick Henry, Thomas Paine and Ronald Reagan all share fairly similar styles in their writing, especially through the speeches they gave. While giving their speeches and other pieces of writing they published, they were very successful in persuading their audience to accommodate for the change that needed to be made during the time. Despite them sharing all successful forms of persuasion, they most commonly adapted to the emotional aspect, also known as pathos. In Patrick Henry’s speech most commonly known as “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death,” he expresses a lot of emotion when trying to persuade the president to agree with his purpose. Henry’s purpose was to gain independence in the colonies by going to war with Great Britain, who had control of them at the time. In the quote, “For my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery; and in proportion to the magnitude of the subject ought to be the freedom of the debate…” Patrick Henry is explaining the importance of the colonies freedom. Henry eventually states that if the colonies don’t push for freedom as he wishes for them to, the colonies will slowly demise in to the arms of Great Britain. Henry ends his speech by saying “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death.” That quote hit the people of the colonies extremely hard because they knew if Henry saw the cause worth dying for, it must have had a high level of importance. Patrick Henry used a lot of emotion while giving his speech which ultimately...

Early sports scientist could only theorize how and what made the body perform mechanical tasks, such as speed and endurance running. It was not until the 20th century that advancements in sports science have revolutionized the fitness and sporting industry. Professor Yuri Verkhoshansky and Dr Fred C. Hatfield have contributed to the majority of advancements in sports physiology, fitness, and athletic performance that coaches, athletes, and fitness enthusiast enjoy today.
