...Gockeln University of Twente P.O. Box 217, 7500AE Enschede The Netherlands ABSTRACT The fashion industry is a dynamic and volatile place, continuously exposed to macro-environmental factors that trigger fashion business models to change. The fast fashion model is currently at the forefront of the apparel market casting questions on whether its underlying philosophy is about to change as well. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify external drivers that might lead to such dynamic changes in the fast fashion model. Moreover, it will be investigated whether these may allude to a possible convergence to the newly emerged slow fashion model which is currently trying to penetrate the fashion market. The international retailer Zara has served as fast fashion representative for this analysis and has been examined for business model adjustments, which might have been triggered by macroenvironmental factors. It was found that especially social, environmental and technological factors have influenced developments in the fast fashion model and that it has indeed adopted slow fashion principles in some of its building blocks to respond to such emerging trends. The future of the fashion industry appears to be tailored by such externalities, continuously reshaping the fast fashion model to eventually arrive at a version that brings a long-lasting competitive edge. However, only time can indicate whether this version will eventually be the result of a conflation of the...

...Introduction Japanese clothing brand, Uniqlo, specialises in stylish casual-wear which is both high quality and affordable. It is the predominant brand of the Japanese company Fast Retailing Company Limited and accounts for 90 per cent of company's total sales (UNIQLO UK). The first Uniqlo store opened its doors in Japan in 1984 and there are now over 760 stores across the country. Now a global brand, Uniqlo began international expansion with the opening of the first UK store in 2001, and it is Uniqlo UK which will be the focus of this report. After introducing itself to the UK, it was not long before Uniqlo had 23 stores across England. However, the brand's simple designs did not prove popular and within two years 18 stores were closed (Marketing, 2007). Since its relaunch in 2007, Uniqlo UK has been gaining momentum, but it still has a long way to go towards becoming a leading fashion retailer in Britain. Consequently, this report aims to further this momentum through the development of a new integrated marketing communications campaign which would be implemented in 2010. Summary Context Analysis Customer Context Segment Characteristics Uniqlo currently targets a very wide audience, describing its key demographics as: Male and female; Fashion-conscious; Cost-aware; and aged between 16 and 96! (UNIQLO UK) Calgary Avansino, Executive Fashion Editor of Vogue magazine, has personally experienced the wide appeal of the Japanese brand. She said, “the store is for...

...production-oriented strategy lead M&S to gain immense market share and strong brand loyalty however, this could only take them so far. In a market place where retailers were moving to a more consumer-oriented strategy, M&S struggled. Unable to provide fashion conscious clothing that the younger consumers desired, it lost significant market share and became known only for its good underwear and clothing targeted at older conservative women (Flynn, 1998). Today the company is trying to vigorously recapture their market by being more consumer-oriented and aware of their competition. They are taking measures to understand and listen to what their customers want and also to realize that the customer has evolved from when they started out in the industry. They have put in place several new strategies to appeal to the new consumer. From campaigns with noted celebrities, to striving to be the world’s first GREEN retailer, supplying fair trade products and being the conscious Corporate Social Responsible Company (Corporate.Marks and Spencer, 2011). M&S was recently ranked 5th in the top 10 UK retailers for 2010-2011 (Retail week, 2011) and acknowledged as a “top family brand” for 2011 by ad agency Isobel and Yougov (Baker & Costa, 2011). This is an exciting time for the M&S marketing team as they strive to appeal to new segments while ensuring that they do not alienate their current base of loyal customers. As this report will show, the current core M&S consumers are affluent...
