...today’s social order the term stereotype has transposed into something based less on ethnicity and race, but more towards face values, in other words an individual’s personal image or identity. Stereotypes allow human beings to typecast an incalculable amount of people into categories almost as if defining the world in order to see it. Stereotypes save society the trouble of unmasking what the world is truly like by giving it its familiarized look. On the subject of stereotypes there was a situation in the Delta Zeta sorority at DePauw University that raised some questions on the matter. It was scrutinized to see if stereotyping might have played a role when 23...

...installation took place in the Lawson Center, the same facility where the FAMU Board of Trustees interviewed Mangum and selected her to be the university's permanent president. The ceremony also served as a moment of closure for James Ammons, FAMU's 10th president. He resigned in July 2012 in the aftermath of the hazing death of a marching band drum major, but he was on the stage with Mangum Friday and presented her with the university's presidential medal. “Its weight is a reminder of the heavy responsibilities that must be willingly carried by all who occupy positions of leadership," Ammons, now a political science professor at FAMU, said. "It was indeed an honor to drape you with this medallion.”Mary Breaux Wright, international president of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority – Mangum's sorority – gave one of the liveliest talks. She likened a strong woman leader to a tea bag, telling an appreciate audience that you don't know strong it is until you dip it in hot water."Madam President and FAMU, there will be many storms in your life, and there has already been," Wright said. "Let me tell you what I have learned: Don't tell God how big your storm is; tell your storm how big your God is." "Yes, after nearly...

...really don’t know that many people and there are a ton of new faces. Through out my life I’ve always had to move a lot with my dad being in the military, I hated it at the time but now I am grateful for it because it made me who I am today. Always having to make new friends made me outgoing and not afraid to walk up to someone new and start talking to them. It made me not afraid to try new things and made me learn how to adapt to new places and new schools. Coming to college is such an exciting experience because it’s a place for you to make all new friends and meet all different types of people from all over. One of the things I really wanted to do coming to college was join a sorority. I ended up joining one of the best sororities here Zeta Tau Alpha and I absolutely love it. I also plan on being involved here at Carolina and taking advantage of every opportunity given to me. The main reason you come to...

...Zeta 2 Reticuli, a dim binary system of Sun-like stars only 39.5 light years away in the little constellation of Reticulum is strangely well-known. This system was once identified as the home of the little grey-faced and black-eyed humanoids who allegedly abducted Barney and Betty Hill and ever since has appeared in popular culture as the quintessential location of extraterrestrial mystery. It is 39 light-years away and is thought to be 8 billion years old, older than the Sun. On September 20, 1996 an extrasolar planet was announced orbiting the star. The planet would have a short orbit (0.14 AU) and mass of about 27% that of Jupiter. However, the discovery was quickly retracted as the signal was shown to be caused by pulsations of the star. Zeta 2 Reticuli system has gained significant popularity because...

...Uzair Sumra Robert Guffey English 100 30 November 2015 What Is The American Dreams? Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a book written by Hunter S. Thompson published in the year 1971. The book is a reflection of American politics during Thompson’s time. It is written with the author (Thompson) as the main character, but he uses a fictional name to avoid repercussions and allow for more artistic license. The book takes place in the early 1970s and the main character, Raoul Duke, is sent to Las Vegas to write an article on the 4th annual “Mint Race 400” buggy race. Under the advice of his lawyer (Dr. Gonzo) both drive out to Las Vegas on a nonstop LSD and mescaline trip. Unfortunately, Duke and Gonzo engage themselves in an adventure of the lifetime. Somehow things go berserk and both of them end up abandoning work and engaging in an experience that involves disparaging everyone around them. The obvious theme of the book is The American Dream. Thompson wrote a lot about the American Dream and just like most people, he believed in the American Dream. Hunter S. Thompson portrays the American Dream as illusionary, as there are some places where he says that the American Dream is about money. The American Dream is a phrase which is heard, at some point, by most people today and the meaning has been understood since the founding of America. The definition of the American Dream appears to be different for most people, depending on their views. Probably the most accepted explanation...

...Fear and Loathing Postmodernism Postmodernism is a philosophical term that describes an era or movement in American culture marked by attitudes of skepticism which challenges many of the ideals of Modernism. As an opposition towards the modern era, Postmodernism can be identified in art through its related terms such as fragmentation, hyper-realism, deconstruction, pastiche and ambiguity. Specifically, postmodernism refutes such concepts as reality, the ability to reach perfection, absolute truth, the structures of capitalism, ideals represented within popular culture, political values and other core concepts related to the structures of American culture. The concept is often criticized as a truism for its ambiguity in its very definition. Ironically, ambiguity in relation to truth is as much a description of the term as it is a concept practiced within the cultural movement. For this reason, the term is perhaps most simplistically exemplified and defined through media texts which encode its ideologies. One such media text includes Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, a film adapted from Hunter Thompson’s 1972 novel. In the following essay, I will define the concept of postmodernism through Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The media text uses humor to challenge modernistic ideas of one’s ability to achieve the Utopian “American dream,” which is often defined as the realization of ultimate happiness and success. Specifically, Fear and Loathing’s satirical refute of the existence...

... Figure 6.2: Schematics of Dynamic Light Scattering 6.1.2 Zeta Potential 54, 55 Zeta ions present in solution, by ionization of its surface groups or due to difference in dielectric constant between particle and dispersing medium. Depending on the surface charge, there will be two layers: a stern layer comprising of tightly bound ions surrounding the charged particles and a diffuse layer containing less firmly associated ions. These two layers form an electric double layer and the potential difference between the double layer and the electro-neutral region of solution is called the zeta potential. The double layer acts as the true surface of the moving particle dictating its stability. Principle: ELS measures the electrophoretic mobility of particles moving in a liquid medium under the effect of electric field. Charged particles move towards anode or cathode with a mobility proportional to their zeta potential. When these particles in motion are illuminated by laser light, they cause light scattering. The mobility of particles can be measured from the shift in frequency of the incident laser beam caused by moving particles. Zeta potential can be calculated from the particle mobility using Smoluchowski equation (Equation 1.2) μ = ζ ε / η ……….. (Equation 1.2) Where μ is the electrophoretic mobility of particles, ζ is the zeta potential, ε is the electric permittivity and η is the viscosity of the solution. Instrumentation:...

...solution, have been widely used to manipulate and transport ions, fluids and particles in micro/nanofluidic devices. Field effect transistor (FET) offers flexible and rapid control of the surface charge property, which in turn provides a more sophisticated control of the electrokinetics-based micro/nanofluidics. Tuning the surface charge property by a floating gate field effect transistor (FGFET) rather than the conventional FET is proposed and analyzed for the first time. In contrast to the conventional FET having a control gate fabricated on the outer surface of the dielectric channel wall, the FGFET has an additional floating gate electrode embedded inside the dielectric channel wall. A mathematical model has been developed to analyze the zeta potential of a planar dielectric surface regulated by the conventional FET and the FGFET techniques. Results show that the FGFET is superior to the conventional FET to tune the surface charge property of a dielectric material in contact with an aqueous solution. The FGFET has great potential to control ions, fluids, and particle electrokinetic transport in electrokinetics-based micro/nanofluidic devices. ...Abstract Globalization has changed the way that goods are exchanged throughout the world. Currently between the U.S. and Mexico there is a huge problem with the illegal exchange of weapons. International crime organizations, such as Los Zetas, are becoming more powerful and this is putting the future of Mexico and all of Latin America in jeopardy. As these organizations become more powerful, federal and local governments are losing control. These weapons that are making there way into Mexico are making it easier for the drug cartels to move drugs up and down North and South America. Also weapons are durable goods, which means that these weapons making there way to Mexico can be sold to other crime organizations and used again and again. This paper will look at two cases in particular, in which weapons are crossing U.S. borders and making there way into the hands of Los Zetas and the consequences that have resulted. What Lay’s Ahead For Mexico Globalization is something that is changing the way that we live. No matter where you go in the world you almost always see influences from other countries in one form or another. It has both positive and negative affects within society. For example, poor countries that are rich in natural resources can distribute them to other countries to benefit their own economy. However, globalization can have negative affects as well. International crime organizations across the world are gaining more access to high-power weapons because...
