Notes on Assessment: All assignments are expected to be completed independently. Plagiarism results in a FAIL grade being recorded. Laboratory assignments will involve developing code and will be assessed on meeting the requirements of the laboratory, correctness, style and presentation. The ability to modify and answer questions about the submitted code may be tested. The lab assistants will mark each student’s work during the nominated lab. Lab assignments will only be marked during lab times. The detailed rules for the marking of laboratory exercises and their due dates will be covered in the first lecture. In brief, a laboratory assignment has three levels of completion: advanced (up to 6 marks), standard (up to 5 marks) and core (3.75 marks). An assignment will only be marked for completion to advanced level on its due date. An assignment will only be marked for completion to standard level (at up to 5 marks) on its due date. An assignment may be marked for completion to standard level (at up to 4.5 marks) one week after its due date. An assignment may be marked for completion to core level (at 3.75 marks) on or after its due date. A student may submit at most one assignment for marking each laboratory session. A student must not submit assignment N for marking unless they have already completed assignment N – 1 to core level. Assignments are marked during a time period to be announced by the subject coordinator (expected to be the second hour of each lab). Lab assignments will only be marked during the announced lab time periods. Electronic Submission of Assessment Items: Unless otherwise notified by the subject coordinator, all written assignments must be submitted electronically. Assessment General: Submission of assessment items via email will not be accepted. Other Procedures for the submission of assessment items: All assignments will be marked in the lab. Technical Fail

To be eligible for a Pass in this subject a student must achieve a mark of at least 40% in the final exam. Students who fail to achieve this minimum mark & would have otherwise passed may be given a TF (Technical Fail) for this subject. Supplementary Exams 1. A student whose overall performance results in a TF will only be granted a supplementary assessment task (e.g. a supplementary exam or a supplementary assignment) if approved by the school assessment committee. 2. A student who achieves a mark of 48-49% will normally be eligible for a grade of WS and a supplementary exam organised by the University. In this case, the maximum grade attainable is PS (Pass Supplementary) and a mark of 50%. 3. A student who has successfully applied for academic consideration will receive either: a. A WD - Withheld Deferred Exam - and be allowed to sit only a supplementary exam, which will be supervised by the University or b. A WH – Withheld – and be allowed to sit a supplementary exam not supervised by the University or complete some other supplementary task 4. If a student is being investigated for misconduct and the investigation cannot be completed before the grades are released the student will receive a grade of WH until a mark is declared. Procedure for the return of assessment items: Marks for assessments will be given in the final part of each assessable laboratory. Penalties for late submission of assessment items: Penalties apply to all late work, except if student academic consideration has been granted. Late submissions will attract a penalty of 100% of the assessment mark. Tutorial/Lab Closure Policy If for any reason, the number of students in a tutorial or lab falls below a sustainable enrolment level, as determined by the Head of School, tutorials/labs offered for that subject may be collapsed or deleted. You will have to attend the new tutorials/lab if this closure affects the one you are attending. We will endeavour to make this decision no later than Week 4 of session. Exams Exams will be run in accordance with UOW Exam rules, please refer to changes to exams and grades at: http://www.uow.edu.au/student/exams/UOW115867.html Supplementary Exams The School does not offer a supplementary exam to a student who has sat a scheduled exam. Supplementary Exams will be dealt with in accordance with student academic consideration policy

( http://www.uow.edu.au/about/policy/UOW060110.html ) 9.2 Timing of Supplementary Exams. While the School normally grants supplementary exams when the student does not sit the standard exam for an acceptable reason, each case will be assessed on its own merit and there is no guarantee a supplementary exam will be granted. If a supplementary exam is granted, you will normally be notified via SOLS Mail the time and date of this supplementary exam. You must follow the instructions given in the email message. Please note that if this is your last session and you are granted a supplementary exam, be aware that your results will not be processed in time to meet the graduation deadline. Student Academic Consideration Policy The School recognises that it has a responsibility to ensure equity and consistency across its subjects for all students. Sometimes, in exceptional circumstances, students need to apply for student academic consideration in order to complete all assessable work. The University applies strict criteria to the granting of student academic consideration. Before applying for student academic consideration, students should carefully read the University’s policy which can be found at: http://www.uow.edu.au/about/policy/UOW058721.html Plagiarism When you submit an assessment task, you are declaring the following 1. It is your own work and you did not collaborate with or copy from others. 2. You have read and understand your responsibilities under the University of Wollongong's policy on plagiarism. 3. You have not plagiarised from published work (including the internet). Where you have used the work from others, you have referenced it in the text and provided a reference list at the end to the assignment. Students must remember that: Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Students are responsible for submitting original work for assessment, without plagiarising or cheating, abiding by the University’s Academic Integrity and Plagiarism Policy as set out in the University Handbook, the University's online Policy Directory and in Faculty handbooks and subject guides. Re-using any of your own work (either in part or in full) which you have submitted previously for assessment is not permitted without appropriate acknowledgement - Plagiarism has led to the expulsion from the University. Student Academic Grievance Policy The School aims to provide a fair, equitable and productive learning environment for all its students. The Student Academic Grievance Policy seeks to support the achievement of this goal by providing a transparent and consistent process for resolving student academic grievances. Any student who has a grievance over a result should obtain a Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences Appeal Against Decision or Action Affecting Academic Experience form from the EIS Central. ( http://www.uow.edu.au/about/policy/UOW058653.html ) The student should firstly take the form to the marker/lecturer to discuss the matter and, if the student is still not satisfied, s/he should take the next step as outlined

on the form. Once the grievance has been considered by the Faculty, if the student still feels the situation has not been fully resolved s/he may consult the Dean of Students. However, the Dean of Students can have no input into the academic judgment of the lecturer and can only review the grievance to ensure proper procedure has been followed. Relevant University Policies, procedures and students services: For more information students must refer to the Course Handbook, relevant online references or consult the UOW General Course Rules in full http://www.uow.edu.au/about/policy/UOW058680.html which contains a range of policies on educational issues and student matters. I Dont Know

...My overall impression on my speech was better than I anticipated. I was very nervous and anxious to get the speech over. I could tell that in the pace of my speech. I was rushing through it and at times it was hard for me to keep track of my place on the outline. I thought I gave good eye contact and I stayed on the speech path, but I could have projected my voice more so that it would have been easier to hear and understand what I was saying. I felt that the delivery was good but I could have moved around more and gave more hand gestures to keep my speech alive. Although I didn’t feel it was a boring speech, I feel like I still tell showed how nervous I really was by the body chemistry I gave off. I prepared a lot for the speech and I went over the speech 3 times in front of the camera at home. I think this helped me a great deal because I had full knowledge of what my speech was about. Because I was nervous and rushing through my speech I often lost my place on my outline, but was able to wing it because I had practiced. It helped a lot that I did my speech on a topic that I am very familiar with and used to talking about. I also used the technique in the chapter that tells you that when you are nervous take a deep breath and use a focus word, mine was “Money”. This technique helped me a great deal in the beginning because I actually felt overwhelmed and on the verge of an anxiety attack. Using this technique calmed me down and made me able to deliver my speech. ...

Copies of the text are available in campus bookstores, from online sources, and from previous COM 114 students. Students must score 70% (35 out of 50 correct) or more to pass. One hour is allotted for the exam. Students will be informed of the results of the written exam via email within 24 hours, and then assigned a speech date and time if applicable. STAR students will have their results at the end of the exam session they attend, and will be assigned their speaking date and time before leaving the location. At the beginning of each chapter in the text is a list of “Chapter Objectives”. Every question on the exam is based on one of those objectives. To be successful on the exam, a student will need to be able to recognize, define and apply the text material in many different situations. Procedure for Writing a Term Paper

...PROCEDURE FOR WRITING A TERM PAPE A term (or research) paper is primarily a record of intelligent reading in several sources on a particular subject. The task of writing such is not as formidable as it seems if it is thought out in advance as a definite procedure with systematic perpetration. The procedure for writing such a report consists of the following steps: 1. Choosing a subject 2. Finding sources of materials 3. Gathering the notes 4. Outlining the paper 5. Writing the first draft 6. Editing the paper Now let's look at each of them. CHOOSING A SUBJECT Most good papers are built around questions. You can find subjects in any textbook. Simply take some part of the text that interest you and examine it carefully. Ask yourself the following things about it to see if you can locate a question to answer in your paper. Does it tell you all you might wish to learn about the subject? Are you sure it is accurate? Does the author make any assumptions that need examining? Can two of the more interesting sections in the text be shown to be interrelated in some useful way? Your paper is an attempt to write a well-organized answer to whatever question you decide upon, using facts for the purpose of proving (or at least supporting) your contention. The most common error made by students in choosing a subject for a term paper is to choose one that is too general. (The most specific subject will always have enough aspects to furnish a long paper, if you think...

...However, as I’m coming close to the end of my college career I realized I was wrong. Nonetheless, looking at my freshman essay now, I do see how I’ve grown within these past for years. Within my freshman year, I realized didn’t take the time to actually analyze my topic to where I could have understand it more. Therefore, it didn’t come out the way that I’ve envisioned it to be. The topic of evil is a widespread and extensive topic. If I was to approach this topic now, I would have done more extensive research on the nature of evil. This would have made me more knowledgeable about the topic at hand and helped me determine how to start this paper. In addition, before beginning this essay, I should have created an outline to help guide me throughout my paper. The outline would have given me the opportunity go through the research that I’ve gathered and helped to be more critical on how I wanted to present evil and it’s different levels. Doing this would have help me to develop this essay within a more critical and organize matter. While reading my freshman essay, I find myself coming up with more ideas of how I could have develop my point of view of the branches of evil, hence making an stronger argument. For example, I should have went into more deal of the ways evil is view within religion and our society. By doing this, it would have gave a more insight to the reader of how the paper is developing. This also would have given the reader an additional understanding of what evil...
