“1408”: Stephen King’s retelling of Adam and Eve Since the dawn of time, man has always told the story of creation. From different cultures to different religions, there have always been similarities of the first days on Earth. From Milton’s “Paradise Lost”, Percy Shelly’s “The Revolt of Islam”, to D.H. Lawrence’s “Sons and Lovers” the story of creation has been found in most works of literature. No doubt, the story of origin has been repeatedly told to reach a new younger audience so that it does not become outdated and lost in time. Different genres in literature help reach a younger, more various, audience to read about the story of how we came to be. In Stephen King’s “1408”, from the geographic boundaries to the substantial parallels of biblical figures, the heavy use of symbolism implies Stephen King is retelling the biblical story of Adam and Eve for a modern generation. By examining the geographical location of The Dolphin Hotel in King’s short story, the reader recognizes that the hotel is the Garden of Eden. “In the Holy book of the Hebrew faith, the Torah, it states that Eden is in the center of Earth” (Rabbi Katz). The Christian Bible states, “The Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden” (The Holy Bible, Genesis. 2.8). With this religious geographical insight, we must next examine where the fictitious Dolphin Hotel would be located if it was in the real world. King states that the hotel is “on Sixty-First Street, around the corner from Fifth Avenue” (King). After looking at a map of New York City, one can see that the Dolphin would lie just east of Central Park, the center of Manhattan. A second concern that allows the reader the knowledge that King wrote the Dolphin Hotel as the Garden of Eden deals with the name of the hotel. One of the most recognized symbols in the Christian faith is the fish. While dolphins are not fish they do reside in the watery depths, and while The Fish Hotel would make it more clearly to the reader King had to use dolphin to fit the higher societal class that encompasses Sixty-First Street and Fifth Avenue. With this information present, one can conclude that Stephen King alluded to the idea that with the geographical location of The Dolphin Hotel is actually the Garden of Eden. Within the garden there has to be the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Secondly, Mr. Olin, one of the characters not negatively affected by 1408, is King’s version of God. Mr. Olin is the overseer of the hotel, which as discussed previously is the Garden of Eden. Throughout the Bible anytime God wanted to speak to anyone, he would wait until he or she were alone to show His true self. For example, when God talked to Moses He waited until Moses was alone, where God showed himself through the burning bush. In King’s story it states that, “Mr. Olin sighed again, but this sigh didn’t have the disconsolate quality of hiss lobby sigh. Yes, it was the office, Mike reckoned. Olin’s office, his special place. Even this afternoon, when Mike had come accompanied by Robertson, the lawyer, Olin had seemed less flustered once they were in here” (King). The reader sees that Mr. Olin, like God, shows his true self only when he is alone talking to whomever Mr. Olin wants. In addition, Mr. Olin tells Mike Enslin that every person who has stayed in that room has died; just like in the Book of Genesis, God told Adam if he ate the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil Adam would die. One can only conclude that, as the overseer of the hotel, and how Mr. Olin act towards other when alone, on top of the grave warning, that Mr. Olin is Stephen King’s version of God. However, despite his warning, Mike Enslin still tempted to eat the fruit blossoming from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. In addition, the room, 1408, is Stephen King’s version of the Tree of Knowledge. When God created man and placed him in the garden, He told man “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die” (The Holy Bible, Genesis 2.16-17). In King’s story, Mr. Olin tells Mike “The Dolphin is small by New York standards, but we run at ninety per cent occupancy” (King). This allows the reader to know that Mike has other rooms, or trees, to go to in this hotel. Mr. Olin then goes on to state that, “I should guess, for example, that every hotel in New York has had its suicides, but I would be willing to wager my life that only in the Dolphin have there been a dozen of them in a single room” (King). Mr. Olin goes on to state that there have been 30 natural deaths inside 1408. As discussed previously, Mr. Olin tries to convince Mike that he will die if he stays, or eats the fruit, in room 1408. By entering the room, the tree of knowledge, they ate the fruit and now are dead because of such events. Just like Adam, Mike was warned by Mr. Olin not to enter the room or he would die. However, through the temptations of pride brought on by his writing, Mike Enslin is lead to eat the fruit because of a key. Moreover, the help of a slippery serpent caused the first sin and the fall of man. In the Bible, it states that, “Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made” (The Holy Bible, Genesis 3.1). Inside the Garden of Eden, the serpent was the oddball of the garden; in Stephen King’s 1408, Mr. Olin informs Mike that, “The Dolphin went to a MagCard system in 1979, Mr. Enslin, the year I took the job as manager. 1408 is the only room in the house that still opens with a key” (King). However, it was not just the serpent that led to the original fall; it was the temptation that was the driving force behind the fall. Similarly, it was Mike’s pride in his writings that led him to fall; Mike only visited The Dolphin Hotel so he could write an entry in his new book. While in Mr. Olin’s office King states that, “As always when he saw his books in someone else’s hands, Mike Enslin felt the oddest mix of emotions: pride, unease, amusement, defiance, and shame,” (King). This boast of emotions, especially pride is what led Mike to allow the key to open the door of 1408. The temptation of Eve, as stated in the Bible, happened as a result “when the woman saw that the fruit was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom” (The Holy Bible, Genesis 3.6). Through their temptations, both Mike and Eve allowed the serpent to guide them and help them eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Seeing how the key to open 1408 leads man to eat from the fruit of 1408 and that the key is the oddball of the hotel one can conclude that the key is the serpent in King’s short story. With four different reasons as to how one can conclude that Stephen King is retelling the origin of man and his fall, one should still question who is Adam and who is Eve. Lastly, at first to the reader, Mike would be considered as Adam; however, with as King’s story goes on we can see that Mike is Eve. The reader can come to this conclusion by looking at the woman in the black dress. As stated by King, “the woman was blond, dressed in black, of course, and the light, flowery smell of her perfume seemed to summarize New York” (King). In the Bible, Eve was pure unlike the women the King makes out in his story. In order to create a pure Eve, King gender bends the role so that it cannot only appease with the younger audience, but give the sense of purity. Mike Enslin even states that he has never once experienced a supernatural phenomenon while writing his books. Like Eve, Mike is pure and has a sense of innocence draw to him that is until he eats the fruit. Once Mike eats the fruit, he sets himself on fire exposing his naked torso; much like Adam and Eve covered their naked bodies after eating the forbidden fruit. Shortly after Mike leaves the room, consumed in fire, Rufus Dearborn saves him. Just like the Bible, after Eve taste the fruit she gives some to Adam. In King’s short story “Dearborn looked up, and it seemed – this was crazy, but it seemed the door to the room the man had come out of was filled with the burning light of an Australian sundown, the hot light of an empty place where things no man had ever seen might live” (King). By looking into the room Dearborn ultimately ate the fruit right after Eve, exposing him to the evils of the world. In conclusion, many authors allude to the story of origin to keep it fresh and youthful for younger generations. The story of the creation of man is one of the most well-known religious tales across all world religions, and can be found in a large number of literary works. Through strong parallels of biblical figures and from geographic locations provide, one can only come to the conclusion that Stephen King meant for “1408” to be a horror-filled version of the biblical tale of Adam and Eve for a younger audience.

Stephen King Pabophobias In 1408

...Phobophobia 1408 is full of events representing different phobias. Pyrophobia, frigophobia, and acrophobia are just few of the many phobias shown in the story. Another three that stick out are phasmophobia, claustrophobia, and agoraphobia. While others may lurk in the background, The fears of ghosts, tight spaces, and helplessness steal the spotlight. These three fears are foundations that Stephen King used to turn 1408 a truly scary story. One of the main phobias shown in 1408 is phasmophobia. Phasmophobia is the fear of ghosts or spirits. This fear is one of the most present phobias in the story, as Mike Enslin is constantly catching glimpses of spirits of previous residents of room 1408 roaming about the room. Along with that, he returns to the bathroom to find the towels and toilet paper once again folded, pictures...

...of View Throughout Stephen King’s “1408” Over the past years, Stephen King has made several novels that are mysterious, fearful, and dark. Many of Stephen King’s books will show the main character’s inner emotions. This allows the readers to understand what the main character is feeling or going through. This creates a very good suspense for the readers because it makes the readers feel as if they were in the scene of the stories. Stephen King’s short story, “1408”, is about a man named Mike who writes all types of books. Madness is defined as a state of severe mental illness (Merriam-Webster). In Stephen King’s “1408”, the author uses third person point of view with limited omniscience to show the mental and emotional transformation of Mike’s increasing madness from the beginning to the end of the story. Hotel Dolphin is like any other normal hotel that one would assume is safe to stay in. The only difference is that it contains a room like no other. The room seems to always play with people’s head causing horrible fatalities. One could assume that Mike Enslin started showing a little bit of madness even before he entered room 1408. For example, one would have to be insane to stay in room 1408. Instead Mike’s hard headedness shows no change on his mind about staying in the room. This could possibly foreshadow his traumatic experience in the room. Mikes madness clearly increases as he enters in the hallway. For example, the door of 1408 appeared to be slanted. This can either...

Three Sculptures

...1 Comparison of Three Sculptures The major difference between the three Davids is based on the periods in which they were carved. Michelangelos was during the Renaissance (1501-1504), Berninis is Baroque (1623), and Donatello carved his David, or Davids, (1408) during the Gothic period. Each gives a sense of style but also different perspectives on why art even exists. Michelangelo’s David is very large in size and stands 14-feet tall. This makes him a rather imposing figure, looking as if he is looming over his admirers. It is more than obvious that this David is naked, has no flaws, and seems to be in perfect health sending off the perception of the perfect man. Classical Greek sculptures idealized there subjects, which was typical of the Renaissance period in which he was carved. Michelangelo’s David seems to be pondering something very important, planning on the battle that is ahead of him. His pose also shows a style of classical Greek called contrapposto, thought to be a distinctive feature of antique sculpture. Michelangelos David is considered to be a symbol of both strength and youthful human beauty. Bernini’s David, on the other hand, is posed as if he is in the midst of battle with Goliath. Viewers can imagine the rock thrown at Goliath by looking at the way his legs are spread and body is twisted. Even his facial expressions show emotional strength envisioning a battle ahead. Where Michelangelo uses his mind to ponder the upcoming battle...

The plaintiff was the United States government with the petitioner being quality stores, Inc. the respondent was accused of making severance payments to its involuntarily terminated employees. The payments made varied depending on the seniority of the employees and the time they served and was not connected to receipts of the state insurance for unemployment. This led to the respondent withholding inter alia taxes that were supposed to be paid to the state as per the Federal Insurance Contribution Act (United States vs Quality stores Inc. et al, 2014). The disagreement occurred since Quality stores Inc. believed that severity payments were not taxable as per the Federal Insurance Contributions Act and was seeking a reimbursement on behalf of itself and its 1850 terminated former employees. Proceedings were initiated at the bankruptcy court since the internal revenue service never allowed or denied the refund and ultimately, the summary judgement made went in favor of Quality store Inc. The district court and the sixth circuit courts of the appeal concluded that severance payments never amounted to wages under the federal insurance contribution act. This ruling was made despite FICA’s definition of wages broadly incorporating any form of remuneration...

Phobias and Addictions

...Phobias and Addictions Kevin Hostetler PSY 300 February 16, 2014 Cara Patterson Phobias and Addictions In order to effectively examine any relationship between phobias, addictions and types of conditioning, it is important to first define and examine the differences between classical conditioning and operant conditioning. According to the Free Dictionary (2014), classical conditioning is defined as “A process of behavior modification by which a subject comes to respond in a desired manner to a previously neutral stimulus that has been repeatedly presented along with an unconditioned stimulus that elicits the desired response.” Operant conditioning however is defined by Mirriam-Webster.com (2014) as “conditioning in which the desired behavior or increasingly closer approximations to it are followed by a rewarding or reinforcing stimulus.” The important distinction between the two is that classical conditioning relies on neutral stimulus, where operant conditioning uses positive or negative reinforcement, rewards, or punishment to achieve results. Following from the definition of classical conditioning and working forward, one can see how phobias can be developed through classical conditioning. Since classical conditioning uses a neutral stimulus paired with an unconditioned response it is rather simple for the neutral stimulus to be something that initiates a sense of fear into the subject. Through this manner of bringing on fear in a subject, it is a small leap forward...

Orwell’s tone in the final paragraph is apathetic, in that he pays particular attention to the racial inequalities that are present in Burma. Moreover, in stating “ The older men said I was right, the younger men said it was a damn shame to shoot an elephant for killing a coolie, because an elephant was worth more than any damn Coringhee coolie” (Broadview. pg 1408), Orwell is highlighting the colonial impact of the British peoples viewpoint, as well as his internal struggle with the decision regarding the choice he made in killing the elephant by analyzing the interpretations of the Europeans perspectives. ...

...Fra Angelico Born in 1395 in Vicchio, Italy, Fra Angelico was known as Guido di, Pietro. In his existence, Fra Angelico was also called Fra Giovanni da Fiesole and Beato Angelico. On 17 October 1417, Fra joined a confraternity at the Carmine Church while still going by the name Guido di Pietro. At that period, he had started his work as a painter as seen in the records of the church of Santo Stefano del Ponte. In 1418 while still a young lad, he and his brother Benedetto took the vow to become Monks according to the order of Dominican Preachers. Consequently, he chose the name Fra Angelico while at the convent of San Domenico in Fiosele. (Tabucchi and Tim, 98) At around 1425, Fra Giovanni became a friar going under the name Giovanni da Fiesole. Not much has been recorded about his parents but presumably, he was from a wealthy background. By 1418, he had completed his novitiate in Cortona. Fra Angelico nurtured a profound religious love for humanity and an appreciation of humility before his God. Angelico started out training together with his brother as an illuminator of missals and other religious books before later pursuing fresco painting. At around 1420, he and his brother opened a painter's workshop in Fiesole. The Order of Preachers belonged to the two new mendicant orders of the era. Unlike their predecessors, the two orders kept in close contact with the community mostly as priests, teachers, or inquisitors. Hence, Fra believed that his work created a medium for all...

Phobias and Addictions

...Phobias and Addictions Phobias and Addictions Everyone has a phobia and an addiction. A phobia is an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something: "he had a phobia about being under water"; "a phobia of germs.” An addiction is the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity. Phobias and addictions are related to classical and operant conditioning. Phobias and addictions are two emotional difficulties, which theorists can account for. Phobias can be acquired through classical conditioning by pairing a neutral stimulus with something that causes pain. Phobia responses can be permanent unless the organism is subjected to the extinction process. In the extinction process, one must confront the fear without the presence of the unconditioned stimulus. For example, in Watson’s experiment, Little Albert developed a phobia of white rats (and other furry objects) as a result of pairing the white rat with a loud bang. The phobia could have been extinguished by repeatedly exposing Little Albert to the white rat without the loud bang. Another way to extinguish a phobia is through counter conditioning. In counter conditioning, the conditioned stimulus is paired with a pleasant stimulus. Little Albert could have extinguished his phobia of the white rat by pairing it with something pleasant (e.g., food, praise) ("Phobias,” 2010). Ivan Pavlov is known for his theory...

Vancouver 2010 Olympics

...The desirability of Whistler Blackcomb and Sochi as winter and summer destination resorts. We can think of Whistler Blackcomb and Sochi as winter and summer destination resorts by having in our mind one historical event for the year 2010 when the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games started in the westernmost province of British Columbia and recently launched the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. It makes sense to organize Olympic Games on the territories that can serve as winter and summer destination resorts. Why? To answer this question let’s consider the geography and all necessary infrastructures needed and designed to carry out the whole bunch of sport venues. Host country’s Organizing Committees are responsible for installing necessary infrastructures for organizing the Olympic Games such as Olympic Villages, air-supported domes, stadiums, training ice rinks and other facilities for competing during the games. It also assists with medical services, lodging facilities, means of transportation for the athletes and officials. For organizing Winter Olympic Games which includes alpine skiing, luge, ski jumping host county’s geography should provide mountain chains, and for Summer Olympics that include canoe sprint, canoe slalom or sailing, geographically the country needs ocean, seas and lakes. As it is mentioned in our case, Whistler is a resort town with nearly 10,000 permanent residents and has two million visitors annually. It served as the designated site of Olympic events.
