...Lainie Vinikoor A Golden Hollywood During the 1930’s and 1940’s, the establishment of the film industry in Hollywood not only immensely changed the city of Los Angeles, but the nation as a whole. Hollywood’s golden age and success can be credited to the great achievements in film, the studio production system, business strategies of the studios, and the changing nature of the economic situation of the country. The implementation of sound and color in film are considered to be the two highest achievements in art and science during this time. Prior to, silent, black and white films were considered the cutting edge technology of the time. However, these primitive techniques were soon overshadowed with the introduction of sound and color. “[The film industry] had no idea what technology would mean to them] they had stumbled into the use of sound almost by accident…They were reluctantly beginning to experiment with color… and tens of thousands of people were marveling at this novelty.” (Friedrich 15) The uses of sound and color in film led to the creation of new opportunities and genres including musicals, crime films, screwball comedies, among many others. These new genres with the continued development of sound and color, made film more appealing and generated a larger and thus more lucrative audience for film. It was the introduction of sound color in film was a success that instantly improved the popularity and the profits of these films. These new achievements were revolutionary...

...Turner Station in the 1940's was one of the biggest steel manufacturers in the United States. It went from "a few paved roads, a doctor, a general store, and an iceman", to 1 and 2 story housing projects popping up all over the place to hold the stream of the soon to be 30,000 workers that were pouring in. After the war had ended, everything dried up as fast as it had come in. In the 50's after the plant stopped operations, half of the population of Turner Station had either moved back to the country or to East Baltimore. In 1999 when Skloot went to Turner Station it was vastly different than anything in the 40's. It was nearly a ghost town....hidden on the map and nearly impossible to get to. ...1940’s Fashion What is fashion? Fashion is whatever is considered popular during a certain time frame. The things that can be popular are things like clothing, food, decor, and behavior. In the 1940’s there was a lot going on such as the war, this lead to the fashion in the 1940’s to be classy and rugged. In the early 1940’s things were good, until one dreadful day Japan decided to bomb Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. This introduced America into the world war. The war made life hard for many people, even well-off designers. This lead to many European designers to head for America. Fleeing to America didn’t solve all their problems, because the war effort made it difficult to use certain materials, because they had restrictions on them.(1940...

...Concentration Camps The 1940’s were probably the hardest years for the Jewish people. These people were unexpectedly taken from their homes and placed in concentration camps. The two major camps were Auschwitz and Belzec. To start off with, Auschwitz was the largest concentration camp used to execute Jewish people. In fact, “From among 1.3 million Auschwitz deportees, at least 1.1 million were murdered,” (Państwowe Muzeum Auschwitz-Birkenau 2017). This explains that many people were brought into the camps but not many made it out. For example, the Nazi’s would bring innocent Jewish people in the camps, killing most but leaving some alive to do hard labor. Auschwitz was known for killing the most Jewish people in a single camp. Secondly,...

...In every society, every era comes a set of standards everyone is expected to follow and perfectly fit into. If one doesn’t fit into this mold they should shape and change themselves to fit in. Some members of society are content being who they are and end up with a label of strangeness. In the early 1940’s all across America Dean Moriarty was bound to being described as “mad”. Every social, economic or family standard was by far broken. Momentarily he may try to adjust, to fit in, but always ends up embracing the madness and chaos that he’s drawn to. This character never let an unspoken standard dictate any part of his life. Social standards may be what Dean deviates the most from. Typically behaving with manners, and responsibility was expected. Along with solving problems logically and following official rules. Any kind of rule following didn't apply to...

...Personal Navigation Devices Jonathan Caple Dr. Ted NETW-583-11038 In our present age we have become a society of convenience and Personal Navigation Devices (PND’s) have become a necessity in every automobile on the road. If navigation is not standard equipment on the vehicle you currently own, not to worry, you can run down to your local electronics store and pick up one of these devices. Once you have the device securely mounted on the location of your choice, you will never get lost or have to stop and ask for directions again – freedom! Why have Personal Navigation Devices become popular? What technologies are required to facilitate the success of PNDs? PNDs are small personal navigation devices that give the user on-the-spot location, turn-by-turn directions, traffic, and even weather updates – a driver’s ultimate toolbox. It is said that PNDs make up one of the largest consumer markets for GPS enabled devices. But with the flood of free applications and the growing capabilities of smartphones, the sales of PNDs are projected to remain flat. (Maharaj, 2011) Most of these devices work in the same manner; they download maps, are updated by satellites, or with cellular data networks, and then display this information to the user. Who are some of the leaders in PNDs? What are the likely factors that will contribute to winning in this marketplace? The concept for Garmins’ PNDs was born from a conversation between engineers around a card table in...
