...village. Before June 2013, I was the South girl from Alabang, unaccustomed to long car rides just to get to school. After four months of traveling every day to Ateneo from Alabang, I deem the traffic on Katipunan to be the worst part of my commute. The traffic on Katipunan is bad because of problems arising from infrastructure and traffic management, and conduct. One of the most obvious reasons why traffic is bad on Katipunan is its vehicle capacity is exceeded. While the Katipunan vehicle capacity is 1,200 vehicles per lane per hour, which compounds to 9,600 vehicles for eight lanes per hour, about 30,000 vehicles belonging to Ateneo, Miriam, and UP Diliman, pass through Katipunan, daily. Vehicles from these schools are not the only ones that use Katipunan, commercial and non-commercial vehicles do too. So, at traffic peak times which last about an hour at seven am to eight am and three pm to four pm, traffic on Katipunan is packed with not only cars but motorcycles, tricycles, buses and trucks, from not only the three schools but commercial and non-commercial vehicles too. According to Dr. Jose Regin F. Regidor’s study in the Philippine Engineering Journal, infrastructure that fails to serve its purpose and policies that are ineffectively implemented cause traffic. Road signs must be noticeable enough for drivers and pedestrians to actually read the signs, and concise enough so drivers and pedestrians have enough time to read and react to them. Road markings should be clear...

Non-motorists are always at highest risk of being injured or killed on the road due to increasing number of traffic on roads. Recent years have observed rapid motorization, urbanization, industrialization, migration and other changes consequent to globalization and opening economic policies of successive governments in India. An associated effect of these fluctuations is the increasing road crashes and deaths due to lack of safety policies and programmes (G.Gururaj, 2014). Road accidents are increasing day by day and India has been accounted as highest number of fatal accidents in the world. Fatal accidents in India have increased to 5% to 1.46 lakh in 2015. This number translated that every day 400 people dies or one person dies in every 3.6 min due to road accidents. There are some states where road fatalities have declined. Assam showed maximum decline in fatal road accidents (India, 2016). These numbers are just the reported numbers but there are many more people who get injured or killed every day. Situation in...

...New Technology in the Trucking Industry Sheila Hanson Southern New Hampshire University English Composition II (Eng.123) Professor McIntyre December 15, 2014 New Technology in the Trucking Industry Drivers who travel the interstate have shared the road with an 18 – wheeler, which incorporates a large portion of the transportation service industry (also known as the trucking industry), and have witnessed firsthand new technology working not only to protect the driver but you as well. New technology is defined as the specific methods, materials, and devices used to solve practical problems. Research has shown that new technology has been both helpful and harmful in changing the trucking industry, but was needed. The electronic log, an electronic clearance system (also called PrePass), and the on-board computer (also called EOBRs which stands for Electric On-Board Recorder) are some of the new technologies implemented by the trucking industry that are designed to improve safety, productivity, and help the trucking industry keep up with the changes of the manufacturing and distribution industry's choice to keep a lower level of inventory on hand by using the just-in-time business practice. The following table illustrates the major changes to the trucking industry by Congress that required new technology, in order for the trucking industry to comply with the new regulation. ...their license, and get freaked out. This is because teens are inexperienced, they easily get distracted, and most do not realize the importance of safe driving, and how unsafe driving can affect their lives. Teenagers have little experience once they get their drivers licenses. This is a major problem, because when you are young you feel invincible. This certainly is not the case. In 2013, 2,163 teens in the United States ages 16–19 were killed, which means that six teenagers died each day (“Get the Facts,” 2013). These crashes were mainly from lack of experience. “The first 500 miles for teenage drivers are the most crucial. During this time, they are 10 times more likely to be in auto crashes than adult drivers” (“Teenage Car Accidents,” 2012). A big concern for driving at night is reduced road visibility. “In 2009, 61 percent of teen crash deaths occurred between 6 P.M, and 6 A.M… this is primarily due to a combination of the visibility challenges caused by dark conditions, and slower response time brought about by fatigue, and a lack of experience driving under such conditions” (Canfield, 2013). Also animals are more active at night, which would lead to an animal related accident, and can cause major damage. Once teenagers obtain their licenses, many teens like to drive fast. They have no clue what kind of danger they are putting themselves, and other people in by speeding. A common reason teenagers speed is to impress friends. “Only 44 percent of teens said they would...

...doing multiple tasks while driving, such as talking on the cell phone, eating, playing loud music, channel surfing, using mp3 players, and interacting with friends in the car even when they admit they find it distracting. The same survey results indicate that an overwhelming 75% of teens admitted to text messaging while driving (JourneySafe, 2007). Text messaging while driving is a growing trend and is becoming one of the nation’s top killers. In 2011, 1.3 billion (nearly 25% of all) automobile accidents resulted from texting while driving and 11 teens died everyday from texting while driving (Textinganddrivingsafety.com, 2013). However, only thirty-nine (39) states plus DC prohibit all drivers from text messaging (Distraction.gov 2012). Quite frankly, distracted driving is a dangerous reality and it makes driving risky business for everyone on the roads. Americans should support the standardization and enforcement of regulations regarding the use of cell phones while driving and make a personal commitment to not drive distracted in order to reduce accidents and save lives. History and Overview of the Distracted Driving Regulation Dilemma History indicates that the topic of distracted driving has been around since the first automobiles. Mary Anderson...

...'' The mind of adults is different than that of minors. The adults have capacity to distinguish wrong and right. The crimes committed by adults and the same nature of crimes committed by minors have different causes in most cases. So the minors should not be tried as adults. Should DUI (driving under the influence) law be changed? This topic is very important topic to anyone. The DUI law should be stricter than it is right now. According to US Department of Transport vehicles per 1000 of the population in 2013 is, 787.9 highest all around the world. More the numbers of vehicles per people more vehicles on the road and more vehicles on the road more likely to have an accident. People who drive under influence harm not only self but the other too can cause the fatal road accidents and destruction of public property. So DUI law need to be changed so who follow traffic rules and regulations can feel safer. Should all states...

...Administrations everywhere consider solutions that are economically feasible, easy to implement and improves patient health all at the same time. Together, they may have discovered their answer in a simple piece of engineering able to resolve all of these issues; the bicycle. However, research suggests that American society is not cyclist friendly due to drivers and/or cyclists not always being properly trained. Also, there is a need for bike lanes and laws that require road sharing. For the last five decades, only motorized vehicles have been considered in street designs throughout our country. Driver focused polices, education, and behaviors are an important part of the cycling safety encounter. Revolution in road and cycling infrastructure design is also needed as our population keeps growing. Care needs to be taken and investments made to ensure that everyone has a safe place to travel. In many ways, there has never been a better time to be a bicyclist. If you thought there were more bicyclists on the roads lately, you’d be right. Biking is thriving. The number of cyclists are growing vastly. More and more, people are using bikes to commute to work, schools and stores or simply for the enjoyment and the health benefits that make it fun. It’s cheaper than the price of fuel. The bike should be incorporated by people as a no-nonsense way of getting around in swarming cities. “According to Bill Wilkinson, director of the Bicycle Federation of America, roughly two million people...

...test once, it is a wise practice for all adults to test again as they get older. Some people believe that once you pass the test, there is no need to test again because you gain experience with years of driving and that is a valuable thing. However, it is a fact that "the elderly drive less, but have more accidents per mile than younger drivers." (Dugan, 2013) With this being true, it is only logical that people need to test more as they age to check their eyesight or reflexes or other things that may impair their driving ability. Most states have some kind of restriction on renewing a driver’s license once you hit a certain age. For instance, some require an eye exam. Others make the person renew in person and not online. Illinois makes a person over the age of 75 take a road test. The states do not share their ideas on how to handle this issue. ` According to Debate.org, some argue that "Knowing the rules of the road and knowing how to drive safely without making stupid decisions is way more important than age". However, when getting older, often times your ability to make good decisions doesn't come as easily. Older people tend to get forgetful or can have bad judgment. Failing health issues can be the cause of this or not. Either...

...Federal Highway Policy Xanthyne Perrin POL 201 American National Government Professor Angela Cranon-Charles June 8, 2015 When we define the Federal Highway policy, we initially think of the many rules and guidelines that are to be followed when considering operating a motor vehicle. The Federal Highway Policy is placed to make a safer driving experience for many road users that are considering traveling by a motor vehicle. The creation of the Federal Highway Policy system in 1956, which was funded by road users who were paying a federal fuel tax of 18.3 cents per gallon of gasoline (The Heritage Foundation, 2010), which initially lost its since of purpose and today no more than 65% of all federal trust fund spending’s goes to general purpose roads. Like any policy in reference to federalism, there are the pros as well as the cons to any situation. The minimum age of drinking, the safety of the way these roads operate and the speed limits are all considered when discussing the Federal Highway Policy as well as the many issues that takes place in reference to the three issues listed. As we are all familiar, the legal drinking age of alcohol consumption is 21. There are many issues to the legal drinking age and why some agree that is should be lowered. Back in the 1970’s, a trend toward lowering the minimum legal drinking age 18, 19, or 20 took place in the states providing many natural experiments (Wagenarr & Toomey, 2005). As a result of lowering the legal drinking...

...a topic and to change public attitudes (rather than sell a product), often advocating better health practices or safety (Jess Dudley, 2013). The purpose of this study is to introduce two advertisements, one is smoking and another one is dunk drive. The paper is structured as follows: the first section will present the background which shows the perniciousness of smoking and dunk drive. The second part will show the content of the smoking advertisement, and the third part will introduce the target audiences and influence to people by AIDA. After that, the dunk drive advertisement will be presented. The first part of this advertisement will present the content. And then, this essay will introduce the adverting media of this advertisement and advantages. Finally, this essay will introduce the marketing ethics and segmentation. There are many reasons cause health hazards in recent years, such as smoking and drunk driving. Smoking is the main element of preventable deaths. Accounting to the research shows that about 80,000 people death in England in 2011 and nearly 9,500 children illness because of secondhand smoke (Jane Ellison, 2013). Additionally, excessive drinking is another threat, especially dunk driving. In 2012, there are 290 people dead cause by drinking, which occupied with 17 percent in all the road traffic accidents (Ray Massey, 2013). Thus, those two social advertisements were made. The first advertisement is about smoking. The advertisement use exaggeration way...

...Charles M. Hayes once said, “Safety first is safety always,”but clearly, not many people follow this extremely important rule. Statistics show that thousands of people, young and old, are killed every year. In response to this dilemma, our class has thought of a possible public policy solution that could potentially help reduce the amount of traffic-related fatalities. What is this policy? This policy is adding more traffic safety tools such as adding more refuge islands, traffic signals, and speed bumps. Now one may ask, how will this policy affect people? Foremost, it will increase taxes because of the people/services required to create the crosswalks. This means that this policy will affect many taxpayers negatively and citizens that want...

...What the Government should do in regard to China policy following the 2013 Federal Election 30 July 2013 at 22:44 Some Australian commentators claim that Australia is at a cross roads, and that it is unprecedented that its largest trading partner is not its closest ally.[1] In fact, its major ally and largest trading partner are engaged in a Cold War power struggle. They go on to say that solving this ‘unprecedented’ situation is Australia’s greatest foreign policy conundrum for at least the next decade.[2] However, Australia’s situation is not unique, neither in the region nor in its own history. By considering the recent positions of the major political parties this essay will examine Australian and Chinese foreign policy in relation to the importance of the Australian-Chinese relationship and whether we need to choose between China and America. Lastly, I shall recommend strategies for the Australian government to implement regarding its China policy. The overarching foreign policy aim for both the ALP and Coalition is serving Australia’s national interest, which can be broadly broken down into four main goals: maintaining the territorial integrity of Australia, including the safety and security of its society and economy; ensuring regional stability and preserving the existing regional balance of power; the sea lanes that make up the arteries of international trade remain open; and responding to new security threats.[3] Included in the last goal are terrorism, international...
