Cycling – Creating the New Norm
Sitting down, whether in a vehicle, office or home, has become the principal offender in a worldwide obesity and diabetes pandemic that is damaging healthcare systems to the breaking point and increasing health risks to millions of overweight people. Administrations everywhere consider solutions that are economically feasible, easy to implement and improves patient health all at the same time. Together, they may have discovered their answer in a simple piece of engineering able to resolve all of these issues; the bicycle. However, research suggests that American society is not cyclist friendly due to drivers and/or cyclists not always being properly trained. Also, there is a need for bike lanes and laws that require road sharing.

For the last five decades, only motorized vehicles have been considered in street designs throughout our country. Driver focused polices, education, and behaviors are an important part of the cycling safety encounter. Revolution in road and cycling infrastructure design is also needed as our population keeps growing. Care needs to be taken and investments made to ensure that everyone has a safe place to travel.
In many ways, there has never been a better time to be a bicyclist. If you thought there were more bicyclists on the roads lately, you’d be right. Biking is thriving. The number of cyclists are growing vastly. More and more, people are using bikes to commute to work, schools and stores or simply for the enjoyment and the health benefits that make it fun. It’s cheaper than the price of fuel. The bike should be incorporated by people as a no-nonsense way of getting around in swarming cities. “According to Bill Wilkinson, director of the Bicycle Federation of America, roughly two million people

Many people are aware that cycling can help in losing weight, lower blood pressure and tone muscle. But, they don't know that cycling improves mental well-being. Aerodynamics in Cycling

...Aerodynamics in Cycling Aerodynamics has become enormously important in bicycle road racing, even more than weight. Bikes are so light these days that it is not unusual to add weights just to get them up to the required minimum weights. Wind tunnel testing is used extensively both in manufacturing and training. Manufacturers test bikes and components in order to reduce drag. One trend in recent years that I find counter intuitive is wider wheels. Newer rims sometimes have a cross section similar to an airfoil, wide in the front and tapering towards the back, or inside of the wheel. They have also added dimples similar to golf ball dimples. In general, most tube cross sections are now being stretched out to an airfoil like shape. Each little thing does not change much, but put together they can make a huge impact on the effort the rider has to put out in the end. A team manager needs to know how to balance many factors such as aerodynamics, weight, cooling, and strength amongst others. As an example for a race with many steep climbs, aerodynamics is less important than weight and cooling for the rider. Maybe a helmet with many vents and high drag is in order so the rider will not over heat. Light but high drag wheels are also ok. On the other hand, it is opposite during a flat time trial, when the rider rides all alone without any drafting behind other riders. In this situation, everything must be low drag, bike, wheels, suit, helmet...

..."by absorbing the energy from the impact, buying extra time for the brain to slow down" (Macyko1). Bicycle riders need to wear helmets to protect their brains from injury, yet unfortunately the public is simply not aware of this need and many people will continue to die or be seriously injured unless something is done. Bicycle helmets save lives and should be required by Arizona State law for riders of all ages. Opponents feel that bicycle helmet laws are too strict and are misdirected. Principally, they feel that helmet laws do not prevent accidents and point out the fact that "motor vehicles are involved in 90-92% of bicyclist deaths" (BHSI/Compendium 4). Creating awareness among drivers by lowering their speeds would create a safer cycling environment. Furthermore, opponents of helmet laws believe that "requiring motorists to wear helmets will save more lives" (Convissor 1) since statistics show the likelihood of fatality while riding in passenger cars is nearly double that of bicycling (Bicycle 15). They are also concerned for the overall popularity of their sport when helmet laws go into effect. After helmet laws went into effect in Australia, "surveys in Sydney found the helmet law reduced...

Bicycles

...4/17/14 English 214 Lines, Vines and Bicycling Times The invention of the bicycle dates back all the way to 1817 when Baron von Drais invented a walking machine that would help him get around the royal gardens faster. Since then it was used as a means of transportation for many years, up until the use of cars started becoming more frequent. However, although cars are a good and refreshing invention that makes it quicker for us to move around, the use of a bicycle is much more convenient for the environment, for your wallet since you are saving money and for your health. An important component that affects our life is the environment which is why bike riding is beneficial to keeping the environment a good place for all of those who live in it. Riding your bicycle can help out with the environment since it doesn’t run on anything but your own physical power, while a car releases CO2 because it needs to run on gas. A car uses “[… ] fossil fuels such as gasoline and diesel to transport people [it] is the second largest source of CO2 emissions, accounting for about 32% of total U.S. CO2 emissions” Since a bicycle doesn’t occupy gas like a car does, it doesn’t release any other toxins, like a car which, in addition to CO2  also release “…carbon dioxide (CO2 ), automobiles produce methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O)” The result of releases of methane to the environment makes it “more efficient at trapping radiation” which ultimately is deleterious to the environment, but can...

Bike Lanes

...Lafayette Bike Lane Dangers and Restrictions Home to the University of Louisiana, Lafayette is one of the biggest college towns in Louisiana. Everyone knows that a majority of college students are poor. Having to pay for food, gas, bills, rent, and school all for the first time it is hard for students to keep up. Many students choose to ride their bike to school or even to run everyday errands. Lafayette has a big problem with biking accidents due to a lack of bike lanes around town. Being a college town we are very far behind on being bicycle friendly. We need to add more bicycle lanes around town, add barriers between the cars and bicycles, and spread bicycle awareness. Biking around Lafayette can unfortunately be very dangerous. As of right now there are only two main roads in Lafayette that have a bike lane. Saint Marry Street and Johnston Street and on those two roads the bike lane does not even span the whole road and instead just little parts of the road. When there are not bike lanes on roads, bikers are forced to ride in the motor vehicle lane obeying the same laws as a large car or truck. This can cause many problems to both cars and bicycle riders. Even the fanciest race bicycles cannot keep up with the 45-mile per hour speed limit on most Lafayette roads. When there are no bike lanes, bikes are expected to ride in the regular lane and obey regular traffic laws. This causes a problem due to the amount of vehicles that pile up behind the slow moving bicycle....

U.S. EconomyHow does the current U.S. economy affect REI retail operations? 1.The American jobless rate is currently at an all time low. The economy is enjoying an upsurge that is fueling the housing market and the stock market and resulting in the U.S public having more disposable income than in recent years. This turns into an up rise for most retail and recreational markets. 2. While the current economic outlook may be boosting the spending activity of most Americans, the demands of balancing work schedules and family life have resulted in a consumer that is extremely careful of how they spend their disposable income. They are demanding high quality, superb customer service and immediate attention. Those recreational retailers who can meet these demands will be the ones who will benefit most from the current economic climate. Global EconomyHow does the current global economy affect REI retail operations? 1. REI, like many U.S. firms are expanding their operations into overseas markets. Free Cycling

...Ever heard of free cycling? Freecycling is when a person passes on, for free, an unwanted item to another person who needs that item. From silverware to mobile homes, people worldwide are choosing to freecycle rather than discard. This idea was devised in May 2003 by Deron Beal in Tuscon, Arizona in the form of the freecycle network. The Freecycle Network is made up of 5,069 groups with 9,152,735 members around the world. It's a grassroots and entirely non-profit movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns. Its mission is “to build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources & eases the burden on our landfills while enabling our members to benefit from the strength of a larger community.” It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by local volunteers (them's good people). Membership is free. The annual budget is running at about $140,000 in income. The funding comes from corporate underwriting, on-site advertising (in the form of a Google sponsor bar), grants and individual donations. Approximately 90% of these funds are used directly for program expenses. The remaining 10% is split evenly between membership, fundraising and other administrative expenses. Major benefits include freeing up space in landfills and cutting down on the need to manufacture new goods. Thousands of such groups dedicated to connecting people who want to give away...

We feel that cycling is a great way to promote healthy active living, and it is a great way for citizens of Toronto to get together and be involved in their community. Studies have shown that pedestrian and cycling traffic are beneficial for a local economy. Customers who arrive at by foot or bike are more likely to spend more money in a neighbourhood’s shops than those who drive (torontoist.com, 2013). Cycling also brings mental and physical benefits to the community members because it is an easy and fun way to exercise. There are weekly events in Bogotá, Colombia called ciclovías and in these events, approximately 2 million people ride their bikes over 130 km of car-free streets. These ciclovías have been going on for over 10 years, and their success has incorporated other activities in the surrounding areas such as yoga lessons, aerobics and other types of entertainment (nytimes.com, 2008). Similar events have been held in Canada and have showed great success. These events were located in Winnipeg, Ottawa, Hamilton, Halifax and Vancouver.
