2112
November 11, 2011 This seven movement “suite” as many people would describe it, is almost 21 minutes in duration. The song, 2112 (pronounced, twenty-one twelve), was written by the band, Rush. Rush is composed of three members; Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee, and Neil Peart. The band originated in Canada in the year 1974. They quickly moved to the United States where they became one of the most popular bands in their era. Alex plays the guitar, Geddy plays the keyboards and bass while singing, and Neil Peart plays his massive drum-set and writes the band’s lyrics. In 1976, Rush came out with their fourth album, 2112—this album is often referred to as “Rush’s break-through album”. This album might possibly feature Rush’s greatest song ever composed, 2112. This song is based in the year 2112, and takes place at “The Temples of Syrinx”, which is where many priests live their lives. These priests do not believe in individualism, they believe they are all equal. All the priests that live at this temple are banded together under the Red Star of the Solar Federation. One day, one of these priests finds a guitar. He learns to how to play this guitar and shows the other priests, even though guitars have been banished from the temple for decades. The high priest thinks the guitar is evil and that it had destroyed the older generations of mankind. The high priest destroys the guitar.
The 2112 album cover is seen as a red pentagram with a naked man on it, but Neil interprets the red star being the evil red star of the Solar Federation and the naked man is the pure, abstract man against the mass.
Rush’s tone color is filtered with a single guitar, a bass or keyboard, drum-set, and Geddy’s voice. Their style is very unique and hard to describe. We haven’t gone through anything close to modern day pieces in class, so I will just say how I feel about what I hear as the song plays.
(Overture: First Movement) The song starts off with a soaring sound, much like wind. Suddenly, the snare-drum, bass, and electric-guitar chime in together making a monophonic rhythm. This is an instrumental movement. The feeling of the piece changes and the texture changes to more of a homophonic degree. As the piece progresses, it generates more intensity and shows off the virtuosity of all the members of the band.
(The Temples of Syrinx: Second Movement) The form of this second movement is intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus outro/A, B, C, B, C, D. Geddy sings in the verse and chorus with a tone color that obviously can’t be mimicked due to the fact voice is a one-of-a-kind tone color. His vocals line up with the lyrics with a dominant and angry appeal.
(Discovery: Third Movement) Discovery opens with the sound of a stream and an acoustic guitar. Geddy starts singing about the musical instrument the priest has found. The tempo feels as though it speeds up, but then slows down again. The drums, electric guitar, and bass break into the mix and create a more filled sound. The bass plays a big role in the softer, acoustic verse with a bunch of measure ending runs.
(Presentation: Fourth Movement) Presentation flows straight out of discovery without notice. The dynamics and tempo change drastically in this part of the suite. Start with a slow and soft verse, progress to slow and heavy chorus, and finish with a fast and what I like to call “in your face” instrumental outro that again shows off these musicians style versatility. I hear reoccurring themes and variations of guitar hooks and vocals, I believe this “suite” could even be described as a theme and variations.
(Oracle, The Dream: Fifth Movement) Alex starts this off with an acoustic intro where Geddy accompanies him with his voice. Again, the drums break in with the bass and electric guitar establishing an emotional break-up of the vocals. My ears swear they have heard a theme like this one previously. They have to use a variation of a theme in most of these movements.
(Soliloquy: Sixth Movement) Soliloquy cracks open with an acoustic guitar hook and vocals, then clashes when the electric guitar and drums break open and intensify the vocals. Geddy brings pain and anger to the table with shows great diversity in his singing abilities. Rush finishes Soliloquy with a heart lifting guitar solo by, Alex Lifeson.
(Grand Finale: Seventh Movement) Grand Finale has to start in a major key, it sounds relieving and happy. They change the song’s key to minor and fasten the tempo to finish up the suite.
My father purchased me a drum-set for Christmas when I was three years old. My interest in drums and music has been growing with age. I performed in pep band, marching band, concert band, jazz band (placed second in Class 1A in 2007), and honor band while in high school. At the age of 10, I had won the Bill Riley State Fair Talent Search for an original composition on the drum-set. I have played on Channel-8 News KCCI twice, and IPTV. I have been composing songs for 4 years now. I have taken Music Theory and Music Composition in high school with my band director, Mr. Robert Palmer. I have never been had an ear for lyrics, if I like the instruments and/or vocals I will listen to the material. I am an instrumental man, which is the main reason I decided this piece. Neil Peart is an amazing drummer that I idolize. I absolutely love the guitar hooks and bass runs Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee put out there. I really enjoy the tone color of Geddy’s voice and the emotion he gives the lyrics. Rush is my favorite band from this era and genre of music. http://www.erikandanna.com/rush/history_of_rush.htm http://youtu.be/LQEgZNqa8jE Lyrics~
[I. Overture]
And the meek shall inherit the earth...
[II. Temples of Syrinx]
We've taken care of everything
The words you hear, the songs you sing
The pictures that give pleasure to your eyes
It's one for all and all for one
We work together, common sons
Never need to wonder how or why
We are the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx
Our great computers fill the hallowed halls
We are the Priests, of the Temples of Syrinx
All the gifts of life are held within our walls
Look around at this world we've made
Equality our stock in trade
Come and join the Brotherhood of Man
Oh, what a nice, contented world
Let the banners be unfurled
Hold the Red Star proudly high in hand
We are the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx
Our great computers fill the hallowed halls
We are the Priests, of the Temples of Syrinx
All the gifts of life are held within our walls
[III. Discovery]
What can this strange device be?
When I touch it, it gives forth a sound
It's got wires that vibrate and give music
What can this thing be that I found?
See how it sings like a sad heart
And joyously screams out it's pain
Sounds that build high like a mountain
Or notes that fall gently like rain
I can't wait to share this new wonder
The people will all see it's light
Let them all make their own music
The Priests praise my name on this night
[IV. Presentation]
I know it's most unusual
To come before you so
But I've found an ancient miracle
I thought that you should know
Listen to my music
And hear what it can do
There's something here as strong as life
I know that it will reach you
Yes, we know, it's nothing new
It's just a waste of time
We have no need for ancient ways
The world is doing fine
Another toy will help destroy
The elder race of man
Forget about your silly whim
It doesn't fit the plan
I can't believe you're saying
These things just can't be true
Our world could use this beauty
Just think what we might do
Listen to my music
And hear what it can do
There's something here as strong as life
I know that it will reach you
Don't annoy us further!
We have our work to do
Just think about the average
What use have they for you?
Another toy will help destroy
The elder race of man
Forget about your silly whim
It doesn't fit the Plan!
[V. Oracle: The Dream]
I wandered home though the silent streets
And fell into a fitful sleep
Escape to realms beyond the night
Dream can't you show me the light?
I stand atop a spiral stair
An oracle confronts me there
He leads me on light years away
Through astral nights, galactic days
I see the works of gifted hands
That grace this strange and wondrous land
I see the hand of man arise
With hungry mind and open eyes
They left the planet long ago
The elder race still learn and grow
Their power grows with purpose strong
To claim the home where they belong
Home to tear the Temples down...
Home to change!
[VI. Soliloquy]
The sleep is still in my eyes
The dream is still in my head
I heave a sigh and sadly smile
And lie a while in bed
I wish that it might come to pass
Not fade like all my dreams...
Just think of what my life might be
In a world like I have seen!
I don't think I can carry on
Carry on this cold and empty life
My spirits are low in the depths of despair
My lifeblood...
... Spills over...
[VII. The Grand Finale]
Attention all Planets of the Solar Federation
We have assumed control

Band Rush Progression

...The band, Rush, was more of making music complex and challenging while combining these influences with their own personalities. That is why most of the songs created by Rush are a true representation of themselves. The album, “2112”, was essential for progressive metal as it was the first classic album from Rush. The story behind this song is that it tells a futuristic battle for freedom against the mythic priests of the temple of Syrinx. Rush managed to add depth to this Song, which allowed the audiences to capture the imagination of this epic battle. To go into details of this song, it is considered a “suite” and it’s divided into seven chapters:song is considered a "suite" and divided into seven chapters: I) Overture, II) The Temples of Syrinx, III) Discovery, IV) Presentation, V) Oracle: The Dream, VI) Soliloquy, VII) Grand Finale. So in the printed lyrics, each chapter begins with a story, describing the events. In part one it talks about the overture of the year 2112. Then part two is about the the origin of Temples of Syrinx and the Priests that rule...

Higher Ed Funding

...Funding for Colleges and Universities: Overcoming the Lack in State Appropriations Emilee Sides Arkansas State University Abstract As higher education enrollment increases, the ability for states to provide sufficient funding to their institutions decreases. This paper will examine a variety of practices that colleges and universities can use to offset the shortage of appropriations. These courses of action include tuition increases, attempting to increase enrollment through out-of-district campaigning, finding additional charitable donations, partnering with private companies, and looking at unconventional bond issuing. Each method of fund-raising has its own advantages and disadvantages. All of these methods, along with their benefits and drawbacks will be discussed. According to the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association (2012), enrollment for colleges and universities has experienced an overall growth of 16.9 percent since 2006 and an overall growth of about 33 percent in the last ten years (p 19). While this should be good news for higher education, unfortunately, state appropriations have not matched this exciting growth in enrollment. According to the report, appropriations per FTE dropped from an all-time high in 2001 of $8,316 to $6,290 in 2011 – lower than any year since 1980. This data indicates that while school must serve a growing number of students, they have fewer resources with which to serve each individual. Obviously...

James Joyce Essay

...James Joyce's Araby In James Joyce's short story "Araby," several different micro-cosms are evident. The story demonstrates adolescence, maturity, and public life in Dublin at that time. As the reader, you learn how this city has grown to destroy this young boy's life and hopes, and create the person that he is as a narrator. In "Araby," the "mature narrator and not the naive boy is the story's protagonist."(Coulthard) Throughout the story this is easily shown, especially when it refers to "the hour when the Christian Brothers' school set the boys free."(Joyce 2112) Although they were freed, they were placed into an "equally grim world, where not even play brought pleasure."(Coulthard) Joyce demonstrates this culture by showing a boy's love for a girl throughout the story. This young boy, is completely mystified by this girl, but at the end, the girl is replaced by the girl with an "English accent" attending the booth at the bazaar. This shows the power and persuasiveness that England has at that time over Dublin. The antagonist in this story, which can easily be determined is the culture and life in Dublin. This has a great effect on the boy and the rest of the people from this city. Dublin is referred to as the "center of paralyses,"(Internet) and "indeed sterile."(Joyce) This plays a huge role in the forming of this boy's life, where there is no fun. "Araby" is a story "of a soul-shriveling Irish asceticism, which...

Explaining Phobia

...Explaining phobia Fear can often be a temporary emotion experienced while riding a roller coaster, watching a scary movie, and attending a haunted hay ride. Within these experiences fear is often expected by the individual and often the fear is temporary. However, some individuals do not experience fear in a temporary manner, he or she will develop a phobia. A phobia is an irrational and excessive fear of an object or situation (Cherry, 2012). The individual experiences an intense fear of something but he or she does not understand why the fear is occurring. The fear disrupts the well-being of the individual by causing the intense fear he or she will be harmed or endangered. Sigmund Freud who often provided details to understand the anxieties of the mind by his analysis of his cases studies (Cervone & Pervin, 2010). One such case is the analysis of Little Hans who was young child who suffered from an extreme fear of horses biting him and the fear of leaving his home (Cervone & Pervin, 2010). Freud suggested the case of little Hans produced the most compelling evidence for the positive Oedipus complex and suggested the Oedipus complex is a universal phenomenon (Lachmann, 2010). Freud did not analyze Little Hans personality but uniquely corresponded with Hans’s father about the young child’s phobias and conducted therapy through Hans’s father (Garber, 2001). Freud and Hans’s father would discuss the difficulties Little Hans experienced and Freud would instruct Hans’s father...

With SEO, corporations raise funds through the sale of stocks rather than the issuance of additional debt. Many articles have mentioned that investors may construe a seasoned issue as a sign that a company is having financial problems. This news can cause the price of both the corporation’s outstanding shares and the new shares to fall. This is the impact of SEOs to the issuer itself, then what is the impact of SEOs to the competitors in the same industry? Lies My Teacher Told Me

...Sarah Whittaker POS 2112 “Lies my teacher told me” This interview opened my eyes up to how history is really written in the United States and shows that it is written by the victors which is why there are so many inaccuracies in our history. The reason Loewen says as to why history textbooks are distorted is because they want to avoid controversy and don’t want to put anything in textbooks that will show the history of the United States in a bad light and want to show the United States as heroes. To make his point, Loewen emphasizes the "dark side" of U.S. history, because that's the part that's missing from our education system. So, for example, we never learned that Woodrow Wilson ran one of the most racist administrations in history and helped to set back progress in race relations that had begun after the Civil War. Helen Keller's socialist leanings and political views are omitted and we only learn that she overcame blindness and deafness. John Brown is portrayed as a wild-eyed nut that ran amok until he was caught and hung, rather than an eloquent and dedicated abolitionist who expressed some of the same views as Lincoln. Loewen's book illustrates the saying that "those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." Ignorance of our real history also renders us incapable of fully understanding the present and coming to grips with the issues of our time. Reconstruction, which textbooks put the blame on black people for the failure...

“the Triangle Fire”

...Jalissa Shackleford Professor Prumith History 2112 sect. 10 November 14, 2012 “The Triangle Fire” In many cases in the nineteen-hundreds women were the main caregivers for the families rather than the men. Women would also slave for hours upon hours at work for the littlest pay you can imagine. When they did bring home a check it would all go to maintain the household, get food and other things that men should have been responsible for. Women were getting tired of working hard for no pay. After the 1911 fire of the Triangle Waist Factory women felt it was time to speak out. Once women did this it made them feel empowered and they had an equal chance to get what they never had. In the early 1900 a women did not get as equal rights as men especially in the work place. They often worked many long grueling hours of overtime and never got the right pay they deserved for it. Some women would work more than 120 hours a week and would never see the same pay as man would if a man worked that many hours. To add on to the already hard working hours, most of the times in the work place women were treated like dogs. They were repeatedly treated like the machines they were running. The bosses would yell at them curse at them and even call them names that were too unbearable to mention. Most young women were dissatisfied with the way they were being treated. One evening in September many young women went to secret meeting of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU)...
