* * A computer/tech invention that will probably shape this century (Exemplification essay)

I believe that the most important invention that will shape the world this century is the Internet. Internet can be defined as the worldwide interconnection of individual networks operated by government, industry, academia, and private parties. Large numbers of people now have access to the internet. The number of individuals accessing the internet is growing exponentially. The Internet has made it possible for the everyday person to access information from pretty much anywhere in the world. This revolution in sharing information has changed the world dramatically. Now we can contact people from countries on the other side of the world with relatively no effort. It is because of internet we are able to search and access information, share ideas, sells products, and stay in touch with friends and family from across the globe.
Internet is great for business. It has global reach and global audience. Customers don't have to sit in traffic, find a parking space, and walk through countless aisles to find and examine goods. And they don't have to drive all the way to a store, only to find out that the desired product is out of stock. In addition to this it stays open 24hrs a day and 7 days a week. You don't have to worry about weekends or federal holidays. From a consumer's perspective as well as a provider's, business can be consummated at any time. The fact that the Internet is operational at all the times makes it the most efficient business machine to date. Plus it is relatively inexpensive to market your product on the internet. Compare to the traditional methods, with a fraction of the cost you can publish information to millions of users. The beauty of the Web is that it allows customers to explore products in as much detail as they desire. If the client just

...projectors, and even projectors for our cell phones, we have forgotten that we will always need something to project on. Unfortunately, with the tragic proliferation of advertising these days, we are probably looking at a future world where all the space on the buildings is taken for billboards and other various projected ads. The only place that would not be taken is the spaces that people walk through. However, that is an option that we can use, with the Heliodisplay or Fogscreen projector. [pic] Figure.1.1 Heliodisplay. Current technologies attempt to create the visual perception of a free-floating image through the manipulation of depth cues generated from two-dimensional data employing well-established techniques. A few examples of these include stereoscopic imaging via shutter or polarized glasses, as well as auto-stereoscopic technologies composed of lenticular screens directing light from a conventional display, or real-imaging devices utilizing concave mirror arrangements. All of these technologies suffer convergence and accommodation limitations. In order to resolve this visual limitation, the image and its perceived location must coincide spatially. A well-established method solving this constraint is by projection onto an invisible surface that inherently possesses a true spatially perceived image location; yet prior art method s rendered poor image fidelity. In late 2003, a small...

...cells, are available in standard sizes such as AA, C, and D, and they are a fast-moving consumer-good category with emphasis on manufacturing efficiency and scale, marketing and branding, and distribution efficiency. One of the earliest forms of rechargeable battery was the wet lead-acid battery, the chemistry for which was invented in 1859. The application that drove this battery into prominence was to power a starter motor for vehicles, but today lead-acid batteries are commonly used for uninterruptible power supplies—in forklift trucks, golf carts, boats and submarines, and vehicles for indoor operation. They are inexpensive, albeit heavy. A variant on the lead-acid battery is the Gel Cell, which is a sealed lead-acid battery with a jellified electrolyte, allowing a higher degree of portability. Smaller rechargeable batteries began as size-compatible replacements for disposable batteries and used technologies such as nickel-cadmium (NiCd), nickel-iron (Ni-Fe), nickel metal hydride (NiMH), and lithium ion (Li-ion) and lithium polymer. As demands for portable electronic devices such as laptop computers, music players, and cellular telephone handsets rose, makers responded with new sizes and custom packaging to meet the unique needs of customers. ...proliferation of patents on trivial inventions that actually retard technological innovation in the long run. This Article reveals that the common wisdom is only half correct. The nonobviousness standard is not too low, but both too high and too low. It is indeterminate. Three principal factors produce nonobviousness indeterminacy: a failure to identify the quantum of innovation necessary to satisfy the standard, a failure to define the baseline level of ordinary skill against which to measure an innovation, and the epistemic infeasibility of requiring a technologically lay decision maker to judge from the perspective of a more highly trained and educated person of ordinary skill in the art. This Article introduces a mathematical model of innovation and patenting to analyze the effects of nonobviousness indeterminacy. Based on the model, indeterminacy in nonobviousness decisions has several unexpected consequences. First, indeterminacy results in an excessive total number of patent grants, and in many patent grants on obvious inventions. Second, indeterminacy leads to too many patent applications on obvious inventions and too few applications on non-obvious inventions. ∗ Professor of Law, Temple University — Beasley School of Law. It begins with a description of this innovative modern day science and discusses its applications. To this end, it explores how robots and androids assist in both domestic and workplace activities. Next, our paper goes into detail on the historical development of human androids which goes back into the into the Renaissance time period. In addition, current development is briefly mentioned which includes economic support from the U.S President, further research, and considering an ongoing project. The collection of models are also noted followed by innovation changes that have been implemented up to this date. Last of all, the legal issues and concerns are described under different cases while government manufacturing has become significant. Next we will delve into the environmental implications androids and robots have on our society such as ensuring a safe society with the additions of these man-made creations and the possible threats they bring. This leads us into the moral and ethical implications of how they can improve our lives and the challenging code of ethics that is brought forth as to how we should consider them in today’s society. ...THE CONSEQUENCES OF MASS COMMUNICATION Cultural and Critical Perspectives on Mass Media and Society Kirk Hallahan ii For Jean and Jenna Copyright info to be set by McGraw-Hill. iii Foreward This book is a brief survey of contemporary ideas about the cultural impact of mass media on society. The use of consequences in the title reflects the fact that most cultural researchers prefer this term (instead of media effects) to describe media's influence on human experience. During the past 30 years, culture has emerged as a major theoretical framework in which to investigate media. Chapter I examines how media influence culture generally, as suggested by various contemporary media scholars and others. Chapter II then focuses on critical-cultural theories about the nature of media power and its potentially negative influence. This book can adopted as a supplementary text in introductory mass media courses along with a survey text such as Joseph R. Dominick's The Dynamics of Mass Communication (available from McGraw-Hill). It also can serve as a foundational text for other assigned readings in advanced courses dealing with mass media and society, communication theory, or cultural studies. Students are encouraged to focus thoughtfully on the main ideas, not attempt to merely memorize details. Important concepts and names appear in boldface and are defined in italics. The abridged Subject Index lists the page with the primary discussion of each topic. Sidebars throughout...

...Technological philosophy Economic models of technological innovation, as well as modern sociological approaches to the study of organizations, predict that two-actor markets will eventually evolve into one dominant technological logic. Why is it, then, that the only two global manufacturers of large commercial airplanes have developed diametrically opposed technological philosophies? Based on secondary historical sources, this article employs a theory of twoparty democracies from political science and the theory of sociotechnical frames to explain why Boeing pilots are allowed ultimate command of their aircraft whereas Airbus confers this authority to the flight computer. Ó 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. 1. Introduction For anyone who has ever flown on a large airplane owned by an airline based in an affluent country, the chances are almost exactly 50% that the plane will be made by Boeing Commercial Airplanes, and 50% that it will be made by Airbus S.A.S. At the same time, it is 100% certain that it will not be made by anyone else. Most passengers probably cannot tell the difference, nor will they care about the type of aircraft they boarded; indeed, they are more interested in flight comfort, safety, and reliability, and it makes little difference whether the plane was manufactured by Boeing or Airbus. The truth is, however, that there are significant differences in the...

...with a movie titled Logan's Run, which offered a vision of the future as a false paradise. In the movie, humanity is portrayed as having destroyed the earth's ecosystem by the 23rd century, through war, overpopulation and pollution, and retreated into a high-tech city enclosed in domes, full of futuristic buildings and public spaces that look like something out of a contemporary shopping mall. Inside, the inhabitants devote themselves to a life of indulgence while a computer with a vaguely seductive female voice controls the city and produces everything they need to live. They know nothing of the outside world, nor do they have any idea how to operate the machines that serve them. As in many similar works, the characters are portrayed as being much like children, dependent on the central computer to shelter them in their gilded cage. But the characters aren't only separated from the nature outside the city. They are also separated from the natural processes of life. They are incubated in nurseries, rather than being born, and they neither marry nor know their children. It is only natural, in their eyes, for sex to be purely a form of entertainment, unconnected to intimacy or procreation. Nor do they know anything of the natural process of aging. Because space is limited in the city, the computer simply does away with everyone on their 30th birthday. To lead these lambs willingly to their slaughter, it has given them a ritual and a myth: at the age of 30 everyone participates...
