...Budget 2013-14: To defend or not to defend Published : Tuesday, 11 June 2013 Mahfuz Kabir Budget 2013-14 has been placed in Parliament for discussion, not for debate per se. At the backdrop of less than projected GDP (gross domestic product) growth, low private investment, low private consumption and less vibration in the domestic economy, there is no hype for the Finance Minister to present something from a 'magic lamp'. The size of the budget with an outlay of Tk 2.22 trillion, although 16 per cent bigger in scale compared to the previous one, is not necessarily a big jump. Can we call this budget overambitious? Perhaps not, because the economy could reach close to the target if the unprecedented violence and shutdowns by political masterminds did not jeopardise the economic potential from the outset of this calendar year. Nevertheless, the fact that growth could cross the 6 per cent mark is no mean achievement. Now the budget's big public investment plan of Tk.722 billion can be seen as a positive instrument for economic expansion in the next fiscal year to tap the unrealised potentials for attracting more private investment. The revenue target of Tk. 1.74 trillion, a point-to-point growth of 20 per cent, seems to be a bit unrealistic even though NBR has performed well in the recent past by well-achieving the successive targets. Nevertheless, this year the NBR went through considerable stress in attaining target because of lower economic mobility, particularly in the second...

...“Loss of Innocence” Innocence is like a tiny flower that fills the eye with their beauty and uniqueness, but in turn, can be destroyed with a simple gust of wind. Strong social problems like racism and rape are among the causes of the destruction of the absence of evil, innocence. Myop is a girl who plays the protagonist role in the story The Flowers. This story was written by Alice Walker. This story is a vivid example of the consequences of racism and how it can affect the life of an innocent girl. In addition to racism, rape is another compelling reason that destroys innocence and leaves marked the history of any person subject to this abuse (White). The story "The Answer Is No" by Naguib Mahfouz tells how a rape victim can be marked forever. Children are the first victims when we speak of racism and rape because they lack the means to defend themselves. They are easy prey for people without a soul with any clear sense of decency and humanity (Crosson-Tower). Racism has become the flagship of empires and nations, to justify their anger against those who are different. The changes we have recently experienced worldwide, this new era of globalization has meant that entire towns revive feelings of nationalism, unfortunately the wrong way. Because of its ambitious leaders with power, these feelings of nationalism have been driven by anger, hatred, intolerance and violence (Dain). The Flowers story is about a girl who is a victim of racism indirectly. Myop is a happy girl, who...

...Sunday, January 22, 2012 Business Bangladesh can be social business champion Social business promises to make Bangladesh a champion in solving global problems, Hans Reitz, founder of Grameen Creative Lab, said yesterday. "The country has its own problems to solve. It has suffered a lot from poverty, natural disasters, malnutrition, illiteracy and many other social problems," he said. "Bangladesh will probably have to handle similar problems in the future as well. It is a place where anyone can find problems easily." But there is a brighter side to it. The experiences of dealing with so many social problems for so long can help solve social ills around the world. "It is just a matter of time that Bangladesh becomes a champion in social business to solve social problems," Reitz said. The 45-year-old spoke at a gathering at The Daily Star Centre in Dhaka. His German-based lab promotes social businesses and the principles of Professor Muhammad Yunus. The profits of capitalist businesses are private and mainly used for personal gratification, Reitz said. "But my enjoyment should not take away other people's enjoyment." Reitz said the capitalist businesses cannot be social businesses because they operate on a mission, whereas social businesses hinge on values. Social business ventures should not be tax-free or have special licences to operate, he said. "It is a normal business. Unlike not-for-profit business, we are part of the business community and have to pay tax." Entrepreneurs...

...INTRODUCTION Islam is the youngest of the world’s major religions. Originated in South Arabia 1400 years ago. Muslims are generally found in Africa and Asia including Russia and South Western China. Their number has increased in America, Australia and Europe during the end of the 20th century Islam is a monotheistic and Abrahamic religion articulated by the Qur'an, a book considered by its adherents to be the verbatim word of God and by the teachings and normative example (called the Sunnah and composed of hadith) of Muhammad, considered by them to be the last prophet of God. An adherent of Islam is called a Muslim. Muslims believe that God is one and incomparable and the purpose of existence is to submit to and serve Allah (God). Muslims also believe that Islam is the complete and universal version of a primordial faith that was revealed before many times throughout the world, including notably through Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus, whom they consider prophets. They maintain that the previous messages and revelations have been partially misinterpreted or altered over time, but consider the Arabic Qur'an to be both the unaltered and the final revelation of God. Religious concepts and practices include the five pillars of Islam, which are basic concepts and obligatory acts of worship, and following Islamic law, which touches on virtually every aspect of life and society, providing guidance on multifarious...
