...O’Connell English 215 09, December 2013 Fight Club Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk uses violence for most of recorded history, violence has played a major role in our lives; for example, through country conflicts to world wars, violence seems to be the tool to our defense. Even in our daily lives, when encountered a conflict, we humans want to make it disappear as quick as possible. We do this by using violence unconsciously, whether it is verbally or physically. To the same effect, in his novel Fight Club, Palahniuk reveals violence to be an inescapable cycle. He does this effectively by using violence in the lives of the characters; acting as a form of escape, a gateway to self- realization, a tool for control and a boost of self- esteem. In this novel, Palahniuk uses violence as a form of escape. Fight Club is a support group that is aiming to escape frustrations and to help release built- up emotions; “They never say stop. It’s like they’re all energy, shaking so fast they blur around the edges, these guys are in recovery from something. As if the choice they have left is how they’re going to die and they want to die in a fight” (Palahniuk 139). In other words, Tyler mainly formed Fight Club to allow men to relieve their tension and stress. It is a form of escape for not only the Narrator and Tyler but for the countless other men who flock to Fight Club as well. Moreover, violence seems...

...between good and evil. Take for instance the Christian faith: in the Christian faith, a good man is someone who is virtuous, and has passion for what they believe in, and follows the bible but an evil person is someone molded by corruptions, including sins and vices. The Christian faith depicts evil through monsters such as demons and serpents, and their impacts in their tales. In the poem Beowulf, Beowulf’s fight against the monsters represents a fight between the Christian concepts of good and evil. The first depiction of good and evil in the poem can be seen in the battle between Beowulf and Grendel. Often times, biblical allusions are used as a means to describe characters Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon. This is illustrated in Andy Orchard’s criticism of the poem, when he states, “As for Beowulf, there seems no getting rid of the poet’s clear references to the biblical tales of Cain and Abel” (Orchard 131). Grendel’s depiction of a demon is derived from these tales in the text when it reads: Grendel, who haunted the moors, the wild marshes, and made his home in a hell Not hell but earth, He was spawned in that slime, conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain, murderous creatures banished By God, punished forever for the crime of Abel's Death (14-17). In this passage, Grendel is described as a demon, who is contradicts the Christian faith, exposing his evil. The good entity in this battle lies within Beowulf. The battle consists of a fight between...

...Atticus Finch fights the good fight, no matter the effect it has on him. Atticus is a respectful and compassionate man and he is the word courage and sees everyone equal. Within To Kill a Mockingbird there are some very instinctive quotes that really shine out to show what he was meant to be in the story. By sharing five quotes revolving around Atticus the author shows that he takes pride in his work and he stands for what he believes in and doesn't know how to give in. Speaking of fighting the good fight, one of the quotes that shines brightly on how much he cares about other people is when he says, "This time we aren't fighting the Yankees, we're fighting our friends. But remember this, no matter how bitter things get, they're still our friends and this is still our home." By this quote the author wants you to know that he does not mean to offend or take part in any wrongdoing against another person. He shows that in order to get what you want you sometimes have to go against the ones on your side, but for the right reasons and to keep respect. This quote also shows how brave he is, not a lot of people would go against the people of their own home town, but he does not care as long as it's for the right thing. A very motivating quote he speaks in...

...King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table Chapter 1: Arthur and Merlin Read by Nathalie Drasse This very old story begins with Uther, a great king. He was a good man and he was king in the south of Britain. Other places were very dangerous at that time, but people did not fight in Uther's country. Uther loved a beautiful woman, Igraine, and he wanted to marry her. But she did not love him and he was very sad about that. Merlin was a very clever man and he knew a lot of magic. He could change into an animal or bird. Sometimes, when he used magic, nobody could see him. He also helped people with his magic, and one day he came to King Uther. 'You can marry Igraine,' he said. 'I will help you. But when you have a child, you will have to give the boy to me.', I will give him to you,' said the King. He married Igraine and later they had a baby son. They called him Arthur. When Arthur was three days old, a very old man arrived at the door of the King's house. It was Merlin. King Uther took the child in his arms and gave him to Merlin. Merlin took the child away. He gave the boy, Arthur, to a good knight. His name was Sir Ector. So Arthur lived with Sir Ector and his son, Kay, and the two boys were brothers. A short time after this happened, King Uther was very ill. He did not get better. He called for Merlin because he wanted to talk about the future of his country. Merlin came and listened to the King. ...Carlton Andrew Mann ENG2D June 7th 2014 A Fight That Can Never Be Won Macbeth and Atticus illustrate a commitment to the Common Good as seen through how they chose to deal with the conflict that arose in their respective worlds. In the books To Kill a Mocking bird by Harper Lee and the Shakespearean play Macbeth. The reader soon realizes the contrast of the two characters that are both alike but due to the events in their respective worlds, choose different paths that do not exemplify a commitment to the common good. The reader is introduced to Atticus Finch, from To Kill a Mocking Bird, who is the father of Scout finch and Jem Finch he is lawyer who represents the less fortunate. In the play Macbeth, Macbeth is the main character and a valiant warrior. In the beginning, they both began as characters that cared about the common good of their people. Both characters were similar in the sense that they showed traits of a leader who fights for justice and show that they care about the good of their people. Soon both stories begin to unfold and we begin to see how malicious Macbeth is, Macbeth shows the reader that he put his own priorities before the people of Scotland by murdering the beloved king Duncan and in this case left the kingdom in jeopardy. Atticus is different because he is willing to put his family in danger to defend a innocent man and look past his skin color. He put Tom Robinson’s priorities before...

...conditioned, and trained to fight are placed in a small pit (a small arena made out of plywood walls) to fight each other for the spectator’s entertainment and gambling. “Man’s best friend” may fight to the death in dog fights, often with tens of thousands of dollars at stake. Dogfighters sometimes kill the losing dogs, and even the winning dogs may die from their wounds. Life as a dog used for fighting is a nightmare. Dogfighting is a huge problem and it needs to stop. Sometimes as an individual you don’t think there is much you can do, but there is. Humane Society of the United States (2011) says dogs that are used as fighting dogs live chained up or are put into a tiny cage, do not get the veterinary care that they need. They die in the ring or they are unceremoniously shot for losing and some are used as “bait” for other dogs. Pit bulls and dogs that look like pit bulls get a bad rap because of their reputation as fighting dogs. Dogs that are used in dog fights often die of blood loss, shock, dehydration, exhaustion, or infection hours or even days after a dog fight. Injuries that are inflicted and sustained by dogs participating in dog fights are frequently severe, even fatal. The American pit bull terrier-type are used in a majority of dog fights. Pit bulls have been specifically bred and are trained for fighting as puppies. With their extremely powerful jaws, they are capable of inflicting severe bruising, deep puncture wounds and broken bones. Dog fights often last for up two...

...In the civil war there were people that wanted to fight so bad that they dressed as if they were a white male in his 30’s. Why did they do this? Who did this? It was all ages, ethnic groups, and even genders. The biggest reason that people believed that they did it was “because they wanted to show that they were just as good as the white men.” This is not the true reason for everyone fighting. Everyone seems to think that the Union was fight for what they thought way right but they were really fighting for reasons closer to their hearts. There were thousands of reasons for them to fight. They could have said it was there calling, what they need to do for their future, or just got drafted, but instead there were three really big reasons for...

...consumerism is, “the theory that an increasing consumption of goods is economically desirable; also : a preoccupation with and an inclination toward the buying of consumer goods.” (Merriam Webster) Fight club engages with the latter. We as people, as citizens of the United States are taught that we must consume goods and our act of consumption if for the greater good of everyone, through economic development. But do we really need these things? On major part of consumerism that is left out is that it causes individuals to wallow in debt. By blindly purchasing goods that you can ill afford, to support a system that does not support you. It is affirmed that, “Consumption provides us with many important challenges now. The contemporary facts of consumption urge us to rethink the ethics and politics of it.2 Concern with political consumerism tends to argue how appropriate consumption linked to life-style politics can have a politically significant critical function.” (Giri 207) While many believe that consumerism is just an economic concept, it goes beyond into the realms of politics and social reform. In Fight Club, Tyler Durden is enraged. Enraged at the fact that people like him are taught to consume. They are taught to run the rat race. Go to work to get money to buy. Money is not used as a means of...

...Friar Lawrence did have a very valid reason to marry Romeo and Juliet. The war between the two families was getting out of hand. A officer and citizen had to stop a fight between the Montagues and Capulets. The Prince came in and said to the fighting men, “Your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace. For this time all the rest depart away.” (Kinsella 774) The Prince was saying that the feud between the families have been going on way too long, and anymore fights, they shall be punished. So the Prince had said the feud has been going on for quite a while now, and if the officers and citizens have to split them up to stop the fights, then it’s affecting everyone in the city. And Friar Lawrence wants good for everyone. So when Romeo...

...long hours with minimum pay. Child labor is a worldwide problem and various laws have been developed to stop it. The affected governments are still too weak to implement these laws and successfully enforce them. Activists continue to fight to eradicate child labor and support the laws. The children are also not able to defend themselves and claim their rights. The children are unable to attend school since most of the times their parents cannot afford to give them education. Corporate child labor is a big problem in the world today and the government is not able to enforce the labor laws that prohibit it. There are various approaches that can be followed to fight child labor and prevent it. Stopping the companies and shutting them down does not solve the problem. The children just find an alternative method to fight poverty. The best methods to fight child labor should involve an alternative route for the children to follow. One of the methods that can be followed is to prioritize education especially primary education to the children, and make it affordable and available to the children. As a consumer you can insist on buying or using goods that are not made through child labor. Companies can put labels on their goods that show that the goods are not made from the use of child labor. Some multinational companies strive to take advantage of the cheap labor offered by children in third world countries. They hire these children in sweatshops to work in extremely unfavorable...

...Response #2 Hannah Miracle In these couple of chapters Amir enters into a kite tournament where he wins. This metaphor about Amir, Baba and the kite tournament “the chill between Baba and me thawed a little.” I think that this is a very good metaphor because if Amir wins the kite tournament then he will also win his father’s respect “Would I ever lie to you, Amir Agha?” (Hosseini 54) This quote signifies Hassan’s loyalty to Amir and how he doesn’t just see as a friend, but as a brother. His loyalty is not just shown through words alone, but through the actions that he does. Lying to Amir is what Hassan believes will separate him from his only and best friend Amir. The imagery shown in this section is if a friend is really a friend when the time comes. Amir doesn’t appreciate Hassan for his values enough to even fight for their friendship and prove his friendship when the time came. He watched Hassan get raped which was not an easy sight to withstand, but at least try and fight for a person who you claim to be your friend not only when you and him are alone, but when others are around you. The theme is Guilt vs. Love and it is shown through Amir’s fight to get rid of the guilt he feels he has inside of him for not helping Hassan and his fight for the love of his father and how he believes that the kite-fighting tournament is the last resort he might have to get the relationship that he always wanted with his father. This section makes me feel that no matter what happens if you...

...Roman Gladiators Long ago, in the Roman Empire, there were people called gladiators. Gladiators were slaves, criminals, and volunteers who fight each other to the death for entertainment. Roman gladiators were mostly men, sometimes there were female gladiators. They trained very hard to fight in the arena. Roman gladiators trained for arena fights by getting in very good physical shape, learning how to die, and learning how to use weapons. To be able to do anything, Roman gladiators had to be in really good physical shape. How did they get in this amazing shape? The first thing new gladiators did when they got to training camp is go through a inspection to see if they were able to train and fight. Research suggests that gladiator trainers kept their students on a largely vegetarian diet. Also, the first thing the trainers taught their gladiators was how to fight without a weapons to gain muscle in their body. Gladiators even trained with weapons two time as heavy as the real weapon to build up their upper body and core. Gladiators also had to learn how to die bravely. They also, had to learn how to die gracefully and with honor. Showing no fear when dying was a big part in learning how to die. Spectators of this sport fully expected these gladiators to die...
