A good old memory
My grandfather bought a 1971 Ford F150 for $1,200 in 1995. I remember it like it was yesterday. He loved that old truck. He spent more money fixing it than the truck was actually worth. The Ford was a kind of silver/grey color with two black stripes down the middle. It had a big dent above the left rear wheel that occurred when a drunk driver side swiped it while stopped at a red light. The truck’s bed was mostly full of my granddad’s golf equipment and covered by a black plastic truck bed cover. The golf gear was not arranged or organized in any way, only he could find what he was looking for any given time. There were always empty golf ball boxes piled up on the bed of the truck. Underneath the boxes, one could find the golfing equipment.
Once I got inside of the cabin, I entered a whole different world. The door on the driver side wouldn’t open at times and I would have to go in through the passenger side door. Most of the time the passenger side was full of newspaper clippings, empty bottles, cans, 2 pairs of golf shoes and a pair of sandals. Inside the cabin, it usually smelled like dirt and grass. My grandfather played golf for a living, not in the PGA or anything like that, but he always managed to make enough money to support his family.
Once I finally got past the odor. I proceeded to insert the key and hoped it would start. Sometimes it did nothing, but my Grandfather told me that this could happen and he said I had to keep trying until I could get it to start. So I continued to crank the engine a more times until the engine came to life. But, I wasn’t very optimistic, because within a few moments it would sputter, rev down and, if I didn’t step on the accelerator quickly a couple of times, died. I would then have to give it another try and then another... It usually took more than three attempts to get the truck running.

...several stages to keep memory in human’s brain. In the other words, it is divided into three steps as the process of memory, from sensory to short-term to long-term memory. Sensory memory is the shortest memory in the brain. It received information through five senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch, which last 1-3 seconds but retain accurately. For instance, people saw something and remembered what it looked like is an ability of sensory memory. Short-term memory (“working memory, which is essential for human cognition, can be thought of as a mental workspace or the brain’s notepad- a neural system for storing and manipulating small amounts of useful information.”) last 15-30 seconds and it is closely related to the process of sensory memory. If people receive new information without repeat old information, the new one will push out all information from brain. “Short-term memories can become long-term memory through the process of consolidation, involving rehearsal and meaningful association.” But when people rehearse information, it turns to long-term memory. Without rehearsal, the information is lost from the short-term memory and forgotten. Long-term memory is obviously stored information for a long period of time. [pic] Types of Human Memory: Diagram by Luke Mastin It is necessary to improve memory in different methods. People’s lifestyle is a based way to keep memory. The Giver Color Analysis

...As a human we can see color, feel love, and have feelings, but in the Giver the community does not have feeling. What kind of life is that? In the book The Giver by Lois Lowry it is based on a utopian society. Jonas lived in a community where they had not feeling, no love and no color. Jonas accepted his very normal life until he became the receiver of memory. When he became the receiver the Giver transmitted many memories of good times and bad times. He noticed that life had more meaning. When he watched his father releasing a baby he noticed that nobody knew what they were doing when they were killing someone. He decided to run away with Gabriel the boy, his family was taking care of. He ran away, on the way down a hill he heard music,...

Marketing

...return to its old advertising jingle 16 years after the company stopped using it The case study “Nostalgia Marketing Brings Memories Back” portrays how companies like Meow mix, Volkswagen, MetLife and others use the concept of old advertising.  On this chapter I have learned about episodic memory which is the knowledge about ourselves and things that have occurred to people in the past, including emotions and sensations tied to past experiences. Meow used 16 years old advertising jingle because people would recall these memories involving visual images, sounds, smells, tastes and tactile sensations. According to the case study 50 percent of consumers surveyed before the new ads aired said they have heard the jingle during the previous 18 months. This showed me how positive it is to go back to old advertising after people can associate the brand positively.  In my opinion, I think this is a good strategy for Meow because we all have unique and different set of experiences and episodic memory is more personal. Meow renovated the old commercial to a newer version and this would help them to advertise its brands with the new product better. By using this technique of episodic memory marketers are able to reinterpret past consumption experiences.  Customers support brands that have a positive attitude towards ads because it preserve personal memories.  2. What role do episodic and sematic memory play in the use of nostalgia marketing? Episodic and sematic memory are long term...

Childhood Memories

...Childhood Memories My personal memories about growing up as a child centered around my family. My family consists of two brothers including me and four sisters. Since I was born, my family and I were staying in an apartment. After that, we have moved to another bigger than the one we living in. after my family has got bigger, we moved to a house which is the one we are staying in right now. When I was born as the fourth child, my mother made a prediction about me and how I would help to evolve and change our family. In theory, I have done just that. I am the first child who left our country to become educated in another. The house I visited as a child was my uncle’s house and there is one of my cousins named Mohammed was at the same age of me which was the reason for me to go there every day. It was filled with many memories and traditions from my family heritage. As time passes by, I have come to realize that home is where your heart lingers. An empty house is crowded from yesterday’s memories. My favorite store to buy candy and chocolates in as a child does not exist anymore. To this day, I can’t recall particular brand names of chocolate, or other visual, identity systems to jog my mind as to what else could be purchased in this store. I chose to remember humanistic features than marketing advertisements. The man who ran the store had very defined features. He was of average build, black hair, and a very caring face. Every time I go back home, I go around...

...“Inside Out” is the story of an 11-year-old girl named Riley, the generally joyful daughter of two loving parents, who is struggling to cope with a difficult transition from Minnesota to San Francisco and the often unstable emotions of youth. The neat part of this movie is that us watching are invited to experience a conceptual version of Riley’s mind to better understand who she is and how she processes the world. Pixar got really creative to do this, we are introduced to Riley’s emotions, Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Anger and Fear, These emotions demonstrate what it might be like in the mind of an 11-year-old girl who struggles with having to move to a different city, away from her friends, away from her hockey league, and has a hard time pretending...

The Giver

...introduced to Jonas, the eleven-year-old protagonist of the story, as he struggles to find the right word to describe his feelings as he approaches an important milestone. He rejects “frightened” as too strong a word, recalling a time when he had really been frightened: a year ago, an unidentified aircraft flew over his community; it was a strange and unprecedented event, since Pilots were not allowed to fly over the community. As Jonas remembers the community reaction to the event, we learn more about the society in which he lives. It is extremely structured, with official orders transmitted through loudspeakers planted all around the community. As a punishment, the pilot was “released” from the community, the worst fate that can befall a citizen. Jonas decides he is apprehensive, not frightened (Jonas and his society value the use of precise and accurate language), about the important thing that is going to happen in December. Jonas thinks he lives in a perfect world. He lives in a highly ordered community where there is no pain, but he learns that there is a price to pay for this kind of life and discovers humanity’s long forgotten pains and joys. He finds out that he is living in a twisted messed up imperfect “utopia”. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community. When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life...

Personal Narrative Analysis

...Memories are the foundation to who we are. As we go on about our day, we learn and remember things that are crucial to our personalities. Though, if we had the ability to erase any memories we could, something may trigger it back, changing your emotions drastically. Evidence from the article shows that memories aid in helping you learn from past experiences to grow as a person, as well as trigger cognitive reflexes that would help in unfortunate situations. If we could have the chance to forget anything with just a touch of a button, we’d place ourselves in incidents that would be inconvenient. Erasing memories would lead to many dangers in the future, as well as make us forget ourselves. Imagine this, you’re in the military in the middle...

Multi Store Model of Memory

...Outline and evaluate the multi-store model (12) | A01Atkinson and Shiffrin argued that there are three memory stores: 1. sensory store 2. short-term store 3. long-term storeAccording to the theory information from the environment is initially received by the sensory stores. (There is a sensory store for each sense.) Some information in the sensory stores is attended to and processed further by the short-term store. In turn some information processed in the short-term store is transferred to the long-term store through rehearsal or verbally repeating it. The more something is rehearsed the stronger the memory trace in the long-term memory. The main emphasis of this model is on the structure of memory on rehearsal | A02Case studies support to the multi-store modelGlanzer and Cunitz found that when rehearsal is prevented, the recency effect disappears. There is evidence that encoding is different in short term and long-term memory. The Working Memory Model

...Memory is very like a storage unit in the brain. It can keep memory stored for a short period of time, short term memory or working memory, and for a long period of time, long term memory. There are various types of memory that make up our memory storage such as general knowledge, things you have learned and metamemory, which is your own awareness of your memory. Many researchers predict that the information storage capacity of humans is up to 50,000 topics on every subject that we have a reasonable amount of knowledge in (Norman, 2001). Short term memory allows us to remember a telephone number for the few seconds it takes us to dial the number (Eysenck and Keane, 2015). Baddeley and Hitch (1974) suggested replacing the concept of the short term store with that of working memory. Working memory is defined as a system that temporarily holds and manipulates information as we perform cognitive tasks. This is for the reason that short term memory stored brief information about an outcome of an early incident and then the memory moves straight onto another outcome and the previous one is forgotten. It just was not sufficient enough. Working memory is the development of short...
