The Picture of Dorian Gray: Plot Analysis The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde is a fiction novel that tells about a man who goes through many trials and tribulations that test his sanity. The novel takes place in the late 19th century which is considered to be the Victorian era. The Victorian era was an era of great judgement and it really depended on your social class whether or not you would get treated with high regards. The contrast between middle-class society and the sins of the wealthy corrupted upper class played a huge role in the novel. Dorian Gray was considered to be of the higher class, therefore, he struggled with the madness that came with it. Dorian Gray was beautiful. So beautiful that Wilde made a point to explain to the reader how beautiful and good-looking he was. “Yes, he was certainly wonderfully handsome, with his finely-curved scarlet lips, his frank blue eyes, his crisp gold hair” (Wilde 11). Not only was Dorian Gray well respected, but he was quite the man to look at and everyone admired him. However, Dorian Gray had some of his own demons to battle with his quest to stay forever young. Having this impossible and selfish wish comes him transforming from a gorgeous innocent pure soul, to a full developed maniac. To continue, like many other novels, there’s other characters that have a great impact towards the main character. Lord Henry is the definition of a bad influence that impacted Dorian Gray. Dorian Gray does not have any parents because they passed away. Lord Henry is the father figure in Dorian Gray’s life. Lord Henry does countless things to corrupt Dorian’s mind and of course Dorian is very open to anything that he has to say. As Dorian takes the advice of Lord Henry, bad things start to happen. The reader can almost get a sense that Lord Henry is doing all of this for his own pleasure. He is trying to mold Dorian into this ideal human being that does horrific and selfish things. Lord Henry believed in heavily on looks and how beautiful someone is. “To me, beauty is the wonders of wonders . It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances” (Wilde 16). Clearly, it’s evident where Dorian got this idea that staying youthful forever was the key to life. Furthermore, Basil Hallward was another important character that impacted Dorian, but in a very different way. He saw the goodness in not only life but in Dorian. Basil was the guy who constantly had to pull Dorian back to Earth when Lord Henry did his daily brainwashing. Basil was also Dorian’s painter. Basil painted Dorian Gray a beautiful self portrait. When Dorian Gray would go and do his awful deeds, It would change. The painting started to change, when Sibyl Vane, Dorian Gray’s ex fiancé killed herself due to Dorian cutting the marriage off. “Dorian”, he said, “my letter—don’t be frightened—was to tell you that Sibyl Vane is dead” (Wilde 71). It was one night when Dorian Gray decided to go see Sibyl in a show because she is a well known actress. Sibyl did horribly because she cannot play her role as good as she did because now things are different. She is madly in love with Dorian. That night, Dorian being as vain as he is, told her how horrible she was a called off the wedding. Now, Dorian is stuck with the guilt of being the reason someone killed there selves and a picture of him that is quickly changing before his eyes. The beautiful image changes, revealing new scars and physical flaws with each of Dorian's dastardly actions. As years pass, the man in the picture grows more and more hideous, as Dorian himself stays young and beautiful. Rumors start to spread about the various people whose lives Dorian has ruined, and his formerly good reputation is destroyed. Finally, Basil and Dorian have a conversation. “Where is it? Why have you pulled the screen in front of it?” (Wilde 81). Basil wants to see the portrait, but Dorian does not allow him to because of how hideous it’s starting to look. After all, it is a representation of his soul. Finally, Dorian finally reaches his peak of insanity. When Dorian goes to reveal the picture to Basil, Basil is speechless. “Dorian Gray glanced at the picture, and suddenly an uncontrollable feeling of hatred for Basil Hallward came over him” (Wilde 115). With that same glare, Dorian turns into a killer and stabs Basil behind his ear, and continues to until Basil is unconscious. With that same knife, he goes for the painting. Not only does he kill Basil, and attempts to destroy the painting, but he eventually faces his inner demons. Dorian locks himself in his room with the portrait. “There was a cry heard, and a crash. The cry was so horrible in its agony that the frightened servants woke, and crept out their rooms” (Wilde 164). It was Dorian Gray who stabbed himself to death. In conclusion, Dorian killing himself “freed his soul” from all the bad he has done. He is no longer on Earth to corrupt people and their lives. Although, he did not complete his original quest to stay young forever, he went through many obstacles that showed him that it was not possible. “No, Harry, I have done too many dreadful things in my life, I am not going to do any more, I began my good actions yesterday” (Wilde 154). Dorian figured out that he’s already done so many terrible things that he could not go back and fix them. That’s what threw him off the edge and drove him to killing himself. All and all, it was the only thing left to be done in his life.

The Picture of Dorian Gray

...Writer “Dorian Gray the Escape Artist” is the culmination of my work in my WR100 seminar, Fantasy at the Fin-de-Siècle. The final assignment was to create a research paper based on an interesting problem or paradox I had found in Oscar Wilde’s book, The Picture of Dorian Gray. For me, one of the book’s most fascinating elements was Dorian’s immature behavior; though he grows older, he never seems to “grow up.” At first, I investigated how my idea related to aestheticism and what Dorian’s immaturity showed about aestheticism; however, I could not find a solid way to prove my thesis. My greatest problem was being unsure of how writing a paper based on a research problem in The Picture of Dorian Gray constituted a researchable argument and not just a literary analysis. Hoping to gain a different perspective on the assignment, I met with fellow classmates to talk out my problem. It turned out that they were having the same issue with their essays, and through discussing my paper with them, I realized that my topic was too narrow to be easily supported by sources; the idea of Dorian growing older without growing up was interesting but could not easily be supported with sources outside the novel itself. With this in mind, I modified my thesis, claiming that though Dorian Gray demonstrates aesthetic behavior in The Picture of Dorian Gray, his fascination with artistic things serves less to pursue aestheticism and more to evade his dark past. In this manner, I argued, Dorian could...

Sexuality in the Picture of Dorian Grey

...Intro to Fiction Sexuality in The Picture of Dorian Gray Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray alludes to homosexuality throughout the entirety of the novel. While homosexual relations between the characters are not directly discussed, the context and conversations between the characters points to homosexual relations between all of the male characters. Oscar Wilde, himself, was part of the Decadents movement at the end of the Victorian period. Decadents are known for undermining the mainstream Victorian ideals. There has been a significant change in society’s morals since the publication of the novel in 1891. A person reading The Picture of Dorian Gray in today’s culture may see nothing wrong about the context of the novel or the relationships between the characters within it but, at the time of publication, it was seen by society as an immoral book and even used in the trial against Oscar Wilde that resulted in two years imprisonment and hard labor. I will argue that using the characters of Dorian Gray, Lord Henry Wotton, and Basil Hallward, Oscar Wilde supports the common Decadents belief that open sexuality in mainstream Victorian culture would make for a better, happier society. From the very beginning of the novel, homosexual relations are apparent through the conversation about Dorian Gray between Basil Hallward and Lord Henry. As Lord Henry questions Basil about the mysterious person in his painting, Basil’s odd obsession with Dorian becomes evident. He describes their...

Dorian Gray Selfishness

...The Picture of Dorian Gray: Literary Analysis Life is like a game of chess, you use the other pieces to your advantage. This is exactly what Dorian did in The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Stepping on the backs of everyone until you stand on top of a mountain of the fallen, how selfish. Dorian proves this theme of learning the results of selfishness when he thinks he is gazing down below from the top, but he is only one step from the edge of despair. The author shows the theme of selfishness throughout the book by using symbolism, gothic elements, and character choices. Symbolism is used throughout The Picture of Dorian Gray to support the theme of selfishness. Dorian’s action being shaped to the portrait actions proves that...

Portait of Dorian Gray

...Analysis of Portrait In the Picture of Dorian Gray, Dorian Gray wishes for eternal youth in exchange for his soul. Even though Dorian always looks the same, his portrait changes with every bad act he commits. Even though Dorian tries to avoid thinking about this, it is always on his mind. The portrait is like his conscience, trying to advise him not to commit all of these evil acts. In the end, the portrait would also lead to Dorian’s death. The stage in the book I chose to draw the portrait was after Dorian killed Basil. By this point, Dorian had already done some pretty terrible crimes, like causing Sibyl Vane’s suicide and smoking opium. These bad deeds affected the portrait by making Dorian’s portrait uglier. For example, after Sibyl Vane committed suicide, the portrait now had a touch of cruelty in the mouth. The more he smoked opium, the more wrinkles he got on his forehead and near his mouth. However, killing Basil was by far the worst crime Dorian had committed. When looking at the portrait after killing Basil, Dorian noticed blood dripping off the hand that killed Basil. Dorian became really disturbed at the sight of it and even considered it for a moment worse than seeing Basil lying on the floor. By this point in the story, Dorian hated looking at the portrait and he was trying to avoid it as much as possible. However, this change in the portrait would contribute to his death. As you can see, there is a big difference between the real Dorian and the portrait...

The Picture of Dorian Gray Chapter I The studio was filled with the rich odor of roses, and when the light summer wind stirred amidst the trees of the garden there came through the open door the heavy scent of the lilac, or the more delicate perfume of the pinkflowering thorn. From the corner of the divan of Persian saddle-bags on which he was lying, smoking, as usual, innumerable cigarettes, Lord Henry Wotton could just catch the gleam of the honey-sweet and honey-colored blossoms of the laburnum, whose tremulous branches seemed hardly able to bear the burden of a beauty so flame-like as theirs; and now and then the fantastic shadows of birds in flight flitted across the long tussore-silk curtains that were stretched in front of the huge window, producing a kind of momentary Japanese effect, and making him think of those pallid jade-faced painters who, in an art that is necessarily immobile, seek to convey the sense of swiftness and motion. The sullen murmur of the bees shouldering their way through the long unmown grass, or circling with monotonous insistence round the black-crocketed spires of the early June hollyhocks, seemed to make the stillness 2 of 250 The Picture of Dorian Gray more oppressive...

Oscar Wilde Research Paper

...Biography An exuberant nonconformist and controversial playwright, eminent author Oscar Wilde produced critically acclaimed literary works that defined the essence of late Victorian England. Posthumously recognized for his only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and satiric comedy The Importance of Being Earnest, Wilde initially acquired criticism for his immoral and unconventional style of writing. Additionally, to his dismay, strife followed Wilde in his personal life as he was notoriously tried and incarcerated on allegations of “gross indecency” (homosexuality). Emotionally depleted post-imprisonment and stricken with poverty, Wilde was diagnosed with meningitis and died soon thereafter at the ripe age of 46. Born October 16, 1854 to father...

Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde

...Themes Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work. The Duality of Human Nature Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde centers upon a conception of humanity as dual in nature, although the theme does not emerge fully until the last chapter, when the complete story of the Jekyll-Hyde relationship is revealed. Therefore, we confront the theory of a dual human nature explicitly only after having witnessed all of the events of the novel, including Hyde’s crimes and his ultimate eclipsing of Jekyll. The text not only posits the duality of human nature as its central theme but forces us to ponder the properties of this duality and to consider each of the novel’s episodes as we weigh various theories. Jekyll asserts that “man is not truly one, but truly two,” and he imagines the human soul as the battleground for an “angel” and a “fiend,” each struggling for mastery. But his potion, which he hoped would separate and purify each element, succeeds only in bringing the dark side into being—Hyde emerges, but he has no angelic counterpart. Once unleashed, Hyde slowly takes over, until Jekyll ceases to exist. If man is half angel and half fiend, one wonders what happens to the “angel” at the end of the novel. Perhaps the angel gives way permanently to Jekyll’s devil. Or perhaps Jekyll is simply mistaken: man is not “truly two” but is first and foremost the primitive creature embodied in Hyde, brought under tentative control by civilization, law, and conscience. According...

The Epithet in the Novel "Jane Eyre"

...INTRODUCTION The present course- paper is devoted to the comprehensive study of stylistic device – the epithet in the literary work “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte. The topicality of chosen by us theme lies in the fact that a human being perceives the reality by means of various images. These images exist everywhere: in art, in nature, in thoughts, and in speech in particular. Each of us at least ones created an image. We use different means (stylistic expressive means and devices) to achieve the aim. In our research we would like to concentrate our attention on “epithet”, a figure of speech which gives the opportunity to create the most expressive and vivid images. Despite the fact that there are many works devoted to the problem under analysis some important aspects such as structural - the lexical stylistic device the epithet as its component have not been fully investigated. This defines the actuality of the work and its theoretical value. The basic purpose of this course-paper is formulated as a research of linguistic nature of epithet, its types from the point of semantic, structural parameters and its informational significance in the text. The given aim predetermines the concrete tasks of the research. The course- paper pursues the following objectives: 1) to read the novel “Jane Eyre” and to find epithets; 2) to reveal the theoretical notion of the epithets and its categories; 3) to observe emotional, evaluative, expressive components of the lexical meaning...

Liszt is a man of extensive culture, vivid imagination, and great knowledge of the world; and, in addition to their high artistic value, his lines glow with poetic fervor, with impassioned eloquence. His musical criticisms are refined and acute, but without repulsive technicalities or scientific terms, ever sparkling with the poetic ardor of the generous soul through which the discriminating, yet appreciative awards were poured. Ah! in these days of degenerate rivalries and bitter jealousies, let us welcome a proof of affection so tender as his "Life of Chopin"! It would be impossible for the reader of this book to remain ignorant of the exactions of art. While, through its eloquence and subtle analysis of character, it appeals to the cultivated literary tastes of our people, it opens for them a dazzling perspective into that strange world of...
