A Rough Ride To The Future Analysis

Today, humans and their actions are a major deciding factor in how the world is ran. Most believe that we are in the era of the anthropocene, which is a period of time that human’s are the dominant influence on the climate and the environment. Three major writers: Wendell Berry, Aldo Leopold, and James Lovelock all have their opinions on what role humans have compared to nature as well as what we should do as humans regarding our relationship with nature and the world. Berry had the agrarianism viewpoint; Leopold had the ecocentrism viewpoint; Lovelock had the Gaia hypothesis. All three authors give their own opinions, however I don’t believe in any one of those viewpoints solely, but more as a collaboration of many different viewpoints we …show more content…
The Gaia hypothesis revolves around the idea that Earth is a super-organism that is also self-regulating. Lovelock believes that the steam engine was the invention that accelerated evolution and instead of just trying to fix what we have already done to Earth, we must evolve and change with Earth just as a self-regulating organism does. An example in James Lovelock’s book, A Rough Ride to the Future, on page 119, signifies how places have already evolved to the climate and how we need to use this as a model for the rest of the world. “Singapore is a large city (5.6 million people)…it has a natural climate 12.5° C hotter than the global average but is kept cool enough for its inhabitants…” Singapore has to be doing something right in order to achieve this result and that something right is evolution over time. Evolution has allowed for this to happen, therefore Lovelocks wants humans to evolve with Earth and that includes energy source and try and slow down the climate change through geo-engineering practices. Lovelock believes that nuclear power is the energy source of the future because of its efficiency increase over coal/oil and its huge amounts of various types of nuclear energy sources that will last us billions of years. Also nuclear power is probably safer than coal or oil energy sources. While geo-engineering has some great ideas, it is just far under researched and to many unknowns to be a certainty like nuclear is. To Lovelock humans are superior, but they must consider the living and non-living because without them the human species will die. Therefore, Lovelock wants us to also become holistic and recognize importance of other organisms but we must evolve to stay

...Course: PM 592 Assignment: Course Project CP-1 Executive Summary Totally Amused, Inc, is a hotel and water theme park innovator which burst into the amusement industry only 10 years ago and has made several big splashes with successful property/facility introductions in multiple states since then. However, the amusement park industry is extremely competitive, so each new venue is built bigger and better than the next to maximize customer enjoyment and park ticket sales. Totally Amused is looking to take its current indoor and outdoor water park locations to the next level, venturing into an area that is not all too familiar. Management is considering a big move into the indoor theme park market. Although water parks and traditional theme parks have their similarities, they have many differences. The project consists of a new 100,000 sq. ft. building which will annex onto one side of an existing building. The indoor facility will feature a first-of-its-kind two-level go kart track, a six-story Ferris wheel (enclosed in glass), 24 lanes of bowling, mini golf, a four-story rope course, and scores of arcade games. Although this new venture sounds like a walk in the park, an important decision is at hand! The project has reached the 50% scheduled completion stage and a control evaluation is being undertaken to analyze the performance of the project and to recommend corrective measures to support the continuation of the project. The project, which commenced on April 4, 2008...

North America markets are now catching up to their European and Asian counterparts with service in more than 30 cities. In the U.S., service rapid growth has led to multiple implementations in major metro areas and many more cities are considering adaptation. The success in recent growth can be attributed to city infrastructure improvements of dedicated biking lanes, public transportation authorities’ extension of service coverage, and most importantly, consumer awareness of health and environmental benefits derived from riding instead of driving. Lockheed Tri Star Case Study

...LOCKHEED   TRI STAR   Analysis & Recommendations                       Toby Odenheim      10‐OCT‐2013 Executive Summary With the L-1011 Tri Star program, Lockheed, well respected for military aircraft contracts, started to move into the civilian commercial aviation sector in direct competition with Airbus, McDonnell Douglas and Boeing. By 1971, having already invested $700 million in development costs, Lockheed was struggling with cash flow and sought $250 Million in federal loan guarantees, funding which was needed to complete development. Despite Lockheed’s assertion to the contrary, NPV analysis demonstrates that the project was never financially viable. However, given the sunk costs, Lockheed’s best option is to continue with production to minimize the project loss. Continuing to production yields an expected NPV loss of $584 million (assuming estimated sales of 210 aircraft) versus a loss of $900 million if production is scrapped outright. Recommendations:   Secure the needed $250 million in funding to complete R&D and move into production. Pursue every option possible to boost total sales, including o Adding an option to lease the aircraft rather than purchase outright. This could help more customers afford the L-1011 thereby driving up sales on reducing unit production costs. o Pursue possible sale of the L-1011 to military and (international) government buyers, rather than focuses exclusively on the commercial market. o Attempt to voluntarily...

Cash Flow Statements

...STATEMENT OF CASH FLOWS Cash flows are critical to a company’s success because among other things they measure the ability of a business to generate cash internally. Positive cash flows allow a company to meet its obligations with creditors and suppliers, take advantage of investment opportunities, replace assets, negotiate better pricing in purchases, and pay dividends; all these without the need of incurring in external financing. Net cash flow needs to be distinguished from Net Income, which includes accounts receivable, accounts payable and other items for which payment has not been received or made (Accruals). Cash flow is used to assess the quality of a company's income; that is, how liquid it is, which can indicate whether the company is positioned to remain solvent. Net income (Income statement) measures a company’s financial results after business operations and financing activities, and it is crucial for investors as this is the statement that determines if overall a business is profitable or not. But because most companies use the accrual accounting method (which I will not explain on this paper), the income statement may not reflect actual changes in cash position. This is why investors should not rely only on this statement to make decisions as should use it only as one “indicator” of revenues minus costs, but it does not give the whole picture of a company’s financial health. It is important for investors and management to analyze the four main financial statements...

...apps, we make cities more accessible, opening up more possibilities for riders and more business for drivers. From our founding in 2009 to our launches in hundreds of cities today, Uber’s rapidly expanding global presence continues to bring people and their cities closer. — From the Uber website, November 2015 In late 2015, Uber was among the most high-profile new companies of its generation. Founded just six years ago, the company connected passengers to drivers at an unprecedented scale, using point-topoint software enabled by smartphone technology. Customers raved about Uber’s reliability and convenience. The breathtaking efficiency of its value proposition had fueled astonishing growth: It was now said to be booking 2 million1 rides a day, and although it did not report revenues as a private company, analysts estimated Uber’s net commission from drivers would come in between $1.5 billion and $2 billion2 in 2015. But if there was an adage about disruptive technology companies—”move fast and break things”— few companies embodied this adage better than Uber. Not only did the company endure frequent customer criticisms about its surge pricing policy, Uber was constantly battling government regulators, taxi companies, and critics who charged that they were playing fast and loose with the legal system. Barry Korengold, President of the San Francisco Cab Drivers Association, described Uber this way: “I think of them as robber barons. They started off by operating illegally...
