In these activities, I learned about three types of First Year Composition that offer in SF State. Those are Accelerated English 114, Stretch English 104/105 and Multilingual Students. Accelerated English 114 is the class for students who can be native English speaker or feel confident about their reading and writing and want to learn in faster pace. Sometimes, the classes size is bigger than other courses. This class can earn 3 credits toward the 120 needed for graduation. Basically, this class is like you can learn the second level of your English course in your spring semester. Stretch English 104/105 is the class for students who could be whether English native speaker or not and do not feel confident about their reading and writing. This class is spilt into two …show more content…
Also, I want to learn in the smaller size classes and not in fast space. It is because I know I am slow learning and I need to put more times on my reading and writing. For English 104/105, I think this class might be the right class for me because I like to stick with same instructor, same classmates and same schedules because I can learn more from there and feel more comfortable. I will get the more time to improve my reading and writing skills. Also, when I have questions to ask, I can ask easily to the instructor. For CMS, I think this class will also fit for me because I am not Native Speaker of English and I have been here for 4 years. Therefore, I do not feel confident about my writing structures and the word choices. Sometimes, I am scared about speaking up. I know the thing I need to improve is that deeper understanding the context of the book. It is because when I was in high school, I was so bad about finding the themes of the book and grammar. So either English 104/105 and CMS will be the right class to choose for my first year composition at SF

My Greatest Accomplishment: The Valedictorian Of My Class

...The most significant accomplishment that I have achieved is that I was the valedictorian of my class for three semesters. Valedictorian, or the first in the class, is one the biggest accomplishments that a highschooler can get in the sense that it proves that your at the top of your game and that you have the best grades. I was the valedictorian of my class for my whole sophomore year and for the first half of my junior year. I then dropped back down to second in my class. While being valedictorian was my greatest accomplishment, the process of getting back to valedictorian is my current, greatest challenge. The reasoning that I dropped has everything to do with weight of AP and honors classes. Generally, I tend to do better in the Math and...

Seventh Grade Research Paper

...what most typical seventh graders would say. Many days were stressful, many days were fun, and many days were full of learning experiences . Before seventh grade even started, I was pretty stressed out. To be honest, my thoughts were invaded by my older brother Collin who said that the seventh grade would be the worst year of my academic life. Thankfully, it was not all that bad, I survived, and actually had some great experiences and grew intellectually. The only subject I struggled in was English. This was because I started as an atrocious writer. I set a couple of goals at the beginning of my seventh grade year, one of which was to get on the honor roll and the other was to become a better writer. Both goals were achieved. Seventh grade has ended up being so much more than I expected. One of my favorite classes in seventh grade was Academics in Action. In this class we were given some fun assignments like the movie poster assignment and a movie script group project. In this class, Mr. Beard told us about the time that his projector caught fire and it was one of the funniest stories I had ever heard from a teacher. Two other classes that I have truly enjoyed this year are Social Studies and Art. I remember when in the production of our greek drama, my group members and I ran...

Effective Teaching in Accelerated Learning Programs

...Running Head: Effective Teaching in Accelerated Learning Programs Abstract The purpose of this article is to review research and theory of accelerated learning and show how teachers have to change their method of teaching for the program (Boyd, 2006). It also offers practical suggestions on how teachers can provide an effective learning experience through accelerated learning (Boyd, 2006). Teachers should use the collaborative method of teaching because it gets the students involved and makes learning more enjoyable for them. The teacher should also make the classroom environment very relaxing and safe. Effective Teaching in Accelerated Learning Programs Accelerated learning programs are a way that many students learn today in the classroom. Accelerated learning programs are structured to enable students to take a course and earn credit for them in a shorter amount of time compared to a regular semester long class. Accelerated learning programs are taught very different from a traditional classroom setting. So, teachers have to learn how to teach the program and provide an effective learning experience as well (Boyd, 2006). A Bulgarian psychiatrist, Georgi Lozanov, taught sixty students how to speak English using non-traditional techniques (Boyd, 2006). He used different techniques such as meditation, visual techniques, and the use of music (Boyd, 2006). He was interested in the student’s ability to recall the information and to use both sides...

A Self-Analysis Paper for the Midterm

...abele to do my homework on time, and acquired the ability of outlining in order to control my idea through logically formulated outlines. What I need to work on to improve is class participation. I have improved my homework doing habit dramatically during this English 102 course. Doing homework has always been a complicated task for me before I attended this class. Since other English classes I took before were a full semester schedule, I used to come class with out doing my homework. Finally, when I registered in this accelerated and fast paced class, I realized that I had to do all my homework before I go class to follow my professor lecture very well. Now, I am able to understand what the professor teaches about. This helped me to follow the professor attentively during the lecture. Doing my homework in time is the most powerful thing I acquired during this course of semester. The second strength that I have improved a lot is my outlining ability to stick to my central idea. Before this class, I wrote a couple of paragraphs and essays on other English classes. However, I usually used to deviate from the main idea of my paper while I write. Then, I started to explore what makes my paper ineffective. Finally, I found out that my poor ability of outlining lowers my paper. Therefore, during this class, I committed to eliminate my poor outlining ability. For instance, in my first paper, outlining helped me a lot to write a well developed paper. It helped me to put things in...

Personal Narrative-Back To The Classroom

...in the increasingly chaotic preschool classroom. Throughout my first day, I heard an onslaught of new words. My head spun, why was no one speaking Chinese? Suddenly, there were “shoes” and “crayons” - two terms my mother had only taught me in Chinese. Every object my mother had taught me in Chinese now had a new English word. Education became a balance between Chinese and English. While in school, I was learning the English alphabet with the rest of my class; however, at home, I was learning Chinese numerals from my parents. My multicultural upbringing made understanding the western concepts taught in school while balancing my contrasting teachings at home difficult....

Algebra 1 High School Dropout

...with their cohort and possibly even being accepted into a post-secondary school. This action research project studied the correlation between the use of graphic organizers and concept maps in an 8th grade Algebra 1 class and the effect of their use on students’ grades. The students were not previously enrolled in middle school Gifted or Accelerated classes. The students were also not non-English proficient, although several were still classified as English Language Learners. Several also had Individual Educational Plans, but their IEP’s were not specific for Math. Introduction Students in lower socio-economic level schools are more likely not to graduate within four years of enrolling in the 9th grade. Many factors appear to contribute to not graduating from high school within four years including family, school, neighborhood, peers, and course grades (Allensworth, E. & Easton, J., 2007). Other factors include age, proficiency in speaking English, gender, and the academic performance in ninth grade Algebra 1 (Silver, D., Saunders, M., & Zarate, E., 2008). Many experts believe that early development of Algebraic thinking is paramount to learning concepts in higher level math courses. Some experts believe that middle school students should enroll in Algebra 1 class starting with 8th grade. Middle school students are still generally visual and kinesthetic learners, requiring more concrete, semi-concrete, and semi-abstract learning. This project is about helping 8th grade students...

Wk3 Poll

...Poll Results Week Three This week’s poll is from the ABC News Poll: History’s a Positive for Clinton; Not So much for Bush or Romney. This poll was conducted by landline and cellular telephone Jan. 12-15, 2015, in English and Spanish, among a random national sample of 1,003 adults, including 843 registered voters. Results have a margin of sampling error of 3.5 and 4 points for the general population and registered voters, respectively, including design effect. Partisan divisions are 30-24-37 percent, Democrats-Republicans-independents among the general population, 33-26-33 percent among registered voters. Scope: The potential for Hillary Clinton to run for President is evident now moreso than ever for the next election. In a hypothetical head-to-head early matchup against five other opponents she leads in the polls. The national survey has Clinton being supported by 53 to 56 percent of registered voters. One of the cited reasons for this is that her husband is a former President and she has a significantly strong political base than her GOP peers. With a 13-point margin voters stipulate they would support Clinton primarily due to her status as the potential first female President. Voters tend to get behind individuals that are trying to create history (Langer, 2015). Clinton’s current base is like cement where she is backed by nine out of ten Democrats that are registered to vote. Due to President Obama’s financial recovery for the country Clinton has an overwhelming...

On Writing

...Since being a UCWR student, I have had the chance to expand my range in my writing skills. From this course, I have learned to expand my writing ability to subjects I would never have broached before, allowing myself to heighten my awareness of the world around me as well as hinder my procrastination. In the beginning of the year, I was very disappointed I would have to take this course. From my previous experience with accelerated English and rhetoric courses, I felt I would be bored and disappointed with the classroom experience. Over the course of the semester, I have learned I was wrong. While in the beginning my engagement level was poor, I was still interested by the current events brought up in class. Some of the biggest topics we discussed (Occupy Wallstreet, Penn State scandal) I never would have previous searched out to be educated upon, despite their high levels of popularity. I really appreciated the opportunity to learn and discuss these subjects in an environment surrounded by students just as least aware as I was. The time we spent in class discussing these topics really opened up my mind to value the opinions of others on subjects like politics which...

Globalization

...benefit for them. However, as the deepening of globalization, it has revealed a lot of problem, especially for developing countries. This essay is to discuss challenges faced by developing countries in the context of international trade in the process of globalization. The author wills look into their challenges in international trade of manufacture goods, agriculture products and services. Globalization Globalization is probably the most frequent emerging word in the news today. Concerning about what is globalization, it reminds me of a joke, which is about Princess Diana’s death. In this joke, Princess Diana’s death is claimed to be a symbol of globalization, for the reason that this car accident is highly globalized: it is an English princess with an Egyptian boyfriend crashes in a French tunnel, driving a German car with a Dutch engine, driven by a Belgian who was drunk on Scottish whisky, followed closely by Italian Paparazzi, on Japanese motorcycles; treated by an American doctor, using Brazilian medicines. This is sent to you by an American, using Bill Gates's technology, and you're probably reading this on your computer, that uses Taiwanese chips, and a Korean monitor, assembled by Bangladeshi workers in a Singapore plant, transported by Indian lorry-drivers, hijacked by Indonesians, unloaded by Sicilian longshoremen, and trucked by a Mexican illegal..... Although, the original intention of the gagwriter is to bring a burst of laughter, this joke, indeed...

Communication Opinion Paper

...Non-verbal (body language), Written, Tactile, and Flavored. There are also six effective communication skills that are the six C’s that include: Correct, Clear, Courteous, Concise, Constructive and Complete (Anonymous, 1994). How does effective communication incorporate the basic elements of communication? It is important to have a good listening and understanding that good listening is often enough. Sometimes the patient or family member actually wants an answer to their question when, indeed, they only the listener to listen to them. Before the sender says anything, it should be well thought out and then spoken. When a patient becomes upset, try to reason with that person by staying calm and always being professional. “If communications accelerated with big developments in medical science diagnostic and surgical innovations, personalized medicine, and blockbuster drugs it was spurred on by a trend at least as big: the rise of the healthcare consumer” (Hicks & Nicols, 2011, p. 45). How do the basic elements of effective communication differ from the basic rules of health care communication? According to DuPré (2005 pg. 5), “Health communication is shaped by many influences including personal goals, skills, cultural orientation, situational factors, and consideration of other people’s feelings”. I believe that communication in the healthcare field is different from...
