Yearly, thousands of requests for information on education and the special needs of children with ADD/ADHD are made. Over the past years, ADD/ADHD has received a lot of attention from parents, professionals, and policymakers from around the country. Now, almost everyone knows about ADD. The official name for ADD is Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. The disorder name has been changed before due to scientific advances and the findings of careful field trials. Now strong evidence supporting the idea that ADHD is not one specific disorder with different variations. AD/HD is a chronic condition that includes difficulty paying attention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. It is a neurologically-based developmental disability. There are …show more content…
An accurate diagnosis would require a review from a well-trained professional who knows a lot about AD/HD and all other disorders that can have the same similar symptoms to AD/HD. The diagnosis is made upon the basis of observable behaioral symptoms in several settings. To collect the information needed, the person doing the evaluation has to use multiple sources. A proper AD/HD diagnostic evaluation includes: a thorough medical and family history; a physical examination; interviews with caregivers, the child, and the child’s teachers; behavior rating scales completed by parents and teachers; observation of the child; and a variety of psychological test to measure I.Q. and social and emotional adjustment, as well as to indicate the presence of specific learning disabilities. After completing an evaluation, the person diagnosing the disorder must make one of three determinations: The child has AD/HD; the child does not have AD/HD but his or her difficulties are the result of another disorder or other factors; or the child had AD/HD and another disorder(co-existing condition.) Explaining AD/HD to your child, and giving them the words to tell you how their symptoms affect them, will allow you to work more effectively with doctors, teachers, and family members. If your child doesn’t understand how ADHD affects them, they can’t tell you what’s bothering them. They also will be unable to tell you that he feels bad about his behaviors because he doesn’t know what is causing
