Adolf Hitler's Euthanasia Program

In the 1940’s, the Nazis, led by Adolf Hitler, murdered thousands of men, women, and children of the Jewish religion or Gypsy lifestyle. During the Holocaust, the Germans murdered any individual that did not fit into Hitler’s purified race. This “cleansing” of the German race began with the sterilization program. After Hitler reaped the successes of the sterilization program, he advanced to his euthanasia program. Hitler did not only euthanize Jews and Gypsies, he also executed people with disabilities. People define euthanasia as, the act of killing or allowing the death of a hopelessly sick or injured individual in a quick and painless way. However, Hitler did not kill those innocent people in a quick, painless way. To maximize the …show more content…
Hitler believed that the German people supported the mass killings of the mentally and physically disabled (Evans 31). Philipp Bouhler, director, and Karl Brandt, attending physician, led the child “euthanasia” program. Public health authorities encouraged parents with disabled children to take their children to a special pediatric clinic, actually a child killing wards (“Euthanasia Program”). The child’s program consisted of twenty-one killing wards and twenty-six physicians (Evans 27). Many physicians referred to the killing wards as “hunger houses.” Children with disabilities died slow and painful deaths (Evans 32). The physicians mainly killed the children by lethal overdose or starvation (“Euthanasia Program”). The physicians gave the patients medication, usually Luminal or morphine, in tablet form, but if the patient would not swallow it, the physician would inject it directly into the heart (Evans 32). Dr. Hermann Pfannmüller, of Eglfing-Haar, murdered 322 children and infants with disabilities (Evans 34). After the deaths of the children, some parents traveled to the institute to figure out what happened to their child. Then after arriving at the institute, the SS men turned the parents away and threatened the parents not to speak of the child’s death (Evans 30-1). Physicians killed four year old Richard Jenne, the last official patient of Nazi euthanasia, at the Kaufbeuren hospital at 1:10 P.M. (Evans 93). In the end, the Nazis murdered approximately five thousand physically and mentally disabled children, ranging from newborns to seventeen years old (“Euthanasia

On March 23, 1933 Hitler was able to successfully pass the Enabling Act stating the need for “the moral purification of the body politic”. (Gellately 13) The Reichstag Fire Decree reveals that Hitler’s political and social agenda is more than dealing with Communism and unemployment, but also evolves the purification of Germany. Euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide are very similar, however, dissimilar at the same time. In all technicality, physician-assisted suicide is the active form of euthanasia, and it gained popularity after the largely controversial case of Dr. Jack Kevorkian. Comprehending the basic knowledge of euthanasia and its history will help one to understand why euthanasia is not such an unacceptable practice, but also why legalizing euthanasia can benefit many people. Euthanasia is derived from “the Greek word for ‘good death’” (Terri). This “may imply that the Greeks and Romans who coined the term agreed on the basic issues [of euthanasia although,] history shows on us that this is not the case” (McDougall 3). Until Christianity came about, if the person is suffering from immense pain and/or the quality of life is futile, a physician’s duty to kill was equated to the duty to heal. Unfortunately, euthanasia received a much more dramatic, negative reputation in Germany in the 1920s when people “who were handicapped, mentally ill, or in asylums … were killed in a program secretly approved by the government” (McDougall 5).
