Open-fit HA: General introduction
Open-fit HA, known as open canal HA is a non-occluding hearing instrument that commonly has a soft, vented and universal size silicon tip which is positioned in the ear canal and connected to the behind-the-ear (BTE) HA via a thin tube (Muller,2006).
On the open-fit HA the transparent thin tube has its position over the ear, and replaces the conventional earhook and tube that delivers the sound output; however it allows the low frequency ( unamplified) sounds to enter into the ear canal (Muller, 2006).
Advantages of open fit HA
Reduced occlusion effect
One of the main benefits of an open fit HA is the reduced and minimised occlusion effect, that is commonly experienced by the users who whears HA with closed …show more content…
Therefore, these features makes the open-fit HA to have a more comfortable fitting in the ear and also make them more acceptable amongst HA users, particularly for those who are self-conscious about using a HA or those displeased with the image of traditional HA ( Dillon,2011; Smith et.al, 2008).
Disadvantages of open-fit HA
The open-fit HA has some disadvantages and limitations, particularly for users diagnosed with severe hearing loss. Due to the severe level of hearing loss, the users often requires increased levels of sound amplification which consequently generate feedback noise. The feedback noise commonly occurs at the frequency appropriate with the natural resonance of the ear canal 3000 Hz. This may result in hearing an unamplified stimulus via open fit before the actual amplification of the HA can occur (Kiessling et al. 2005)
Other disadvantages of the open-fit HA may occur amongst the patients with poor motor skills, muscle atrophy and insufficient dexterousness, as they might encounter difficulties in handling the small size of the hearing …show more content…
Ideally the volunteers will be recruited from the student/colleague /staff population of the University of Southampton; however volunteers/participants from outside of University of Southampton area may also be included in this study. Randomisation will occur amongst the population of volunteers;
Each of the volunteers will be randomly selected for testing REMs on open fit HA with a random selection of 10 left ears and respectively 10 right ears.
To control for bias, it will be necessary to randomly assign the order in which test will be carried out: the ear to be tested first; and the hearing aid model to be tested randomly.
7.2 Inclusion and exclusion criteria:
Prior for testing each volunteer, it will be required to obtain their form of consent by signing a consent form of participating; informational leaflet/ or experimental information sheet will be handed. Consent for the experiment study will be taken from the Human Experimentation Safety and Ethics Comittee of the “Institute of Sound and Vibration Research”at the University of Southampton. Risk assessment approval will be a must before conducting this experiment

Open-Source Movement and the Future

...OPEN-SOURCE MOVEMENT AND THE FUTURE ITSU1003 INTRODUCTION TO OPEN-SOURCE Generally computer software sources (the human readable version of the software) are of two kinds; closed and open. Open-source programming has been prominently growing in the past ten years. In this model, programmers share their codes freely in order to be modified and used by others. They are allowed to alter and change the original software as much as they like. This in turn will produce higher quality software with improved features. For the open-source programs to be reliable, some sort of licenses has been approved by Open Source Initiative (OSI) which is a “non-profit corporation dedicated to managing and promoting the open-source definition for the good of the community, especially through the OSI Certified Open-source software certification mark and program.” HISTORY OF OPEN-SOURCE Open-source began to form in the hacker’s society of the United States computer science laboratories such as Stanford and MIT in the late 1960’s. Programmers were members of societies in which each member was expected to share his or her code among the society members. This would apply improvements on different codes by members of the society. In addition, programmers were able to use each other’s knowledge in their own interest mutually. By the early 1980’s the university hacker societies began to collapse, and the hackers were hired by commercial companies producing proprietary systems (systems that required...

...is part of a larger company.” It is a local operation completely owned and operated by a foreign firm. These organizations can be acquired by another but can also be built from the ground up. Of course, though, with every business decision comes risk; advantages and disadvantages of subsidiaries are deeply weighed when this becomes an option for expansion. There are many advantages to having subsidiaries in other countries. One major advantage is the amount of control the parent company gains over the subsidiary. The parent company becomes the boss. They now gain control of operational means and strategic moves. This means that the parent company can now have the subsidiary function by means that the parent company sees fit. Another advantage to having foreign subsidiaries is the expansion of brand recognition. By taking the parent companies name to the foreign countries, the name is being spread and the brand is well recognized throughout the world. This opens up opportunities into new marketplaces, which broadens the company name and spreads the chance of success in new areas of business. Along with many other advantages, a parent company also controls the assets of its subsidiaries and can invest these assets as it sees fit....

...addressed are the type of software desired, either open-source or propriety, and what characteristics of the database meets the company’s needs. There are two basic types of database programs people can choose from when deciding what they want for their small business, an open-source database or a propriety one. While both of these are similar, they still have their advantages and disadvantages. First, consider what an open-source program is. The term open-source means exactly what it sounds like; the source code for the software is completely open and free to the public. Some advantages that come with this are the fact there is no upfront costs when it comes to obtaining the database program. While this sounds great, one needs to consider the tools the business has at its disposal. If you do not have the people to manage the databases and run them, then more employees must be hired in order to support the system. This can lead to more cost in the long run. So the fact that it’s free can also be a disadvantage. Another advantage to open-source database systems is a lot of them have a huge following such as MYSQL. MYSQL is database that is designed to use Standard Query Language (SQL) and it is compatible with most popular platforms. Last, there are a lot of third party tools or add-ons that can come with using open-source databases. This is because everything made for the program is free too. A couple of disadvantages to open-source databases are that since the software is...

The Future of Media

...Introduction To Open Source – Open source media means media software with no restrictions There are open source forms of media and closed source forms of media. Open source has been growing more and more rapidly in the past decade as most forms of media we have discussed in class on Friday mornings. With an open source form of media software, programmers share their codes freely in order to be modified and used by others. They are allowed to alter and change software with improved features. For open source programs to be reliable, licensing has to be approved by Open Source Initiative, which is a corporation that certifies shares and promotes open source software. Where Open Source Came From Open Source began with the Hacker’s society of the United States computer science lab in Stanford MIT in the late 1960’s. It was a collective were members shared their code with other members. This would allow members to use each other’s knowledge to improve their own interest. In the 1980’s the Hackers Society began to fall apart after the members were hired by commercial companies to produce systems that required users to purchase a license in order to use them. Later they left those commercial companies and recreated the hackers’ society. One of the first open source systems was a Unix compatible operating system named GNU by Richard Stallman. What The Open Source Is Open source is similar to “free software”, but the open-source users are generally able...

Discuss the Advantages and Disadvantages of Globalization

...DISCUSS THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF GLOBALIZATION The world as we know it has evolved over the years. From times when communities thought they were alone through periods when they depended on one another through trade to today when it is considered to be a global village. Over time the interdependent nature of countries across the world has gained prominence, hence the coinage of the term Globalization. Globalization is defined as the tendency for the world economy to work as one unit, led by large international companies doing business all over the world (Longman Business English Dictionary 2000). There has been many views concerning globalization. Whereas some people are of the opinion that it is good and are in favour of promoting and supporting it, others see globalization as detrimental to the world in general. This essays will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of globalization. The idea of globalization is an old one and can be traced back to the days when nations fought to create empires. The Babylonians and Romans through the conquest of weaker nations to formed huge empires thereby setting large single economies. These however did not extend to the global level as is happening now. As Ellwood (2001, p.21) noted, globalization is a new word which describes an old process: the integration of the global economy that began in earnest with the launch of the colonial era five centuries ago. The aim of colonization was to establish new sources of raw materials...

(4 pts) A: During these years, the key elements fit very well for Dell. The first advantage gained is efficiency of order based on its Direct Model. The second advantage gained is a solid supply chain and lower inventory based on its low-cost strategy. What caused Dell to lose its No.1 spot in PC industry in 2007? Internal factors and external factors? Anything to do with its strategy and implementation?
