Ehrenhalt states, “I think privacy is the single most overrated issue in the entire lexicon of public policy-state, local, federal, or any place else,” this quote is the main point in Alan Ehrenhalts article, “The Misguided Zeal of the Privacy Lobby.” Ehrenhalt talks about how people lose sleep over the concern about their privacy, and he claims that there are way bigger problems on the internet that people need to be worrying about rather than that. While you can definitely tell what Ehrenhalts opinion is on this topic, he is not very effective in logical reasoning and trying to persuade his audience. In Ehrenhalts introduction paragraph he uses a very good hook, and that hook was him listing his social security number. It causes the reader to really pause and take note that this writer is not only not afraid of sharing his personal information, but is willing to publish his own social security number. The reason Ehrenhalt did this is to prove the point that people really don't care about that kind of information. Ehrenhalt states, “I have my share of secrets, just like anybody else, but at the moment I can’t think of a single one that’s vulnerable to exposure simply upon presentation of an I.D. number.” This quote does a great job of hooking the reader, and proving Ehrenhalts main point of the article. It is shocking as a reader to see that information put out there for anyone to take advantage of. Although this was a very successful use of kairos, this article would be more overall effective if he used more than just one.
