American Spirit
The American Spirit can defined by many people and by many events. The Alaska Purchase may not be an example of all the definitions of the American Spirit but it does cover a few. The Alaska Purchase at the time seemed like a great waste to the American people. It was given nicknames such as Seward's icebox and Seward's Folly. What Americans didn't know was how valuable it would become in the years to come. The Alaska Purchase is a good example of the American Spirit through intuition and perseverance.
Almost everyone but William Seward, secretary of the state at the time, believed that Alaska was nothing but a barren ice block. However Seward knew what the new American frontier was actually like, mountain ranges, dazzling bays, lush forests and only in the upper quarter of Alaska was the barren frozen wasteland everyone expected. Seward knew that in this territory twice the size of France there had to be some useful resources from it (Gold 80). Seward was right, the territory already had an abundance of timber, a wealth of fisheries and fur, that could, when properly executed, could produce a healthy profit (Russell 45). Whales, more specifically, whale oil was a very important resource up until electricity and light bulbs lit up our world. Whale oil was used in virtually every oil lit lamp on the planet so when the whales would migrate north to Alaska, the valuable whale oil would be collected. These so far are only the resources Seward knew about and his intuition, or gut feeling, told him there was more to be discovered. He was correct, Alaska would soon be discovered holding oil and gold. A little more than a century later the infamous black gold would be found at Prudhoe Bay in 1968. Nine years later in 1977, after oil companies shelled out more than 900 million dollars to build the Alaskan pipeline. It’s first shipment of oil was valued at 7.2 million dollars, exactly what William Seward had paid for all of Alaska (Gold 115). Therefore Seward’s intuitive predictions were correct as the land would pay for itself many times over, just from oil. Although much sooner Alaska would pay for itself. By the end of the 1800’s prospectors found gold, triggering the Klondike gold rush; all the gold mined out during that gold rush would, in today’s dollars, be valued at roughly twenty four billion dollars (Bennett 407). Which proved everyone who doubted Seward wrong, and that Alaska was more than Seward’s polarbear garden. It was a valuable addition to America.
Also being aware the U.S had minimal coal refueling stations and ports closer to Asia, Seward saw the opportunity to open up more trade in Asia. Intuitively Seward sought this advantage, unlike those who opposed the purchase. Seward had already be looking for more territory to expand to but his “efforts to acquire island footholds in the Pacific and Caribbean were unsuccessful” (Russell 43). However Seward was able to claim the Midway Islands west of Hawaii and the soon to be glorious prize of Alaska. Alaska has a chain of islands on the southwest corner which stretches fairly close to Japan and the rest of Asia. With Seward gaining this land much more trade with Asian countries, providing a significant boost for each economies. Intuitively Seward was able to see past the fact that Alaska is a cold and remote place, and see that, with the future advances of technology the remoteness of Alaska would no longer matter; and that even with the technology of the time the pit stops Alaska provides helps boost trade.
However living in this new frontier wasn't easy. Especially in the northern part of Alaska where the coldest temperature recorded in Prudhoe Bay was negative sixty one degrees fahrenheit. For many new settlers, like those from the Klondike gold rush, the cold was more than they expected. Not many settlers came at first, resulting in very few small villages because of that most people lived off the land. they almost had to as the time between shipments of basic supplies could and would sometimes be extremely long (Snell 188). Especially during the winter months when a majority of bays would freeze over, effectively making resupply impossible. Therefore living off the land was almost mandatory. To learn how to do so effectively many assimilated into Aleut’s, native Alaskans, villages. Others just worked with the Aleuts in an effort to stay alive. What they would learn from the natives would lead to the settlers own perseverance. The Aleuts would teach how to make canoes from trees, how to properly catch seals, how to skin animals and how to use every bit of a resource usefully (Snell 172). Then what the first settlers learned would be passed on to the next ones until the population could no longer be supported by living off the land. For the amount of seals and other animals to hunt would dwindle as the demand increased. Then to be able to live off a constant resupply they would have to live in the southern most regions of Alaska because to the north all of the sea and land routes freeze over. For the Northerners to persevere over the harsh conditions planning trips and stocking up was very necessary. Even the miners during the Klondike gold rush lived this way. There wasn’t a town them to rely on. All they had was what the brought, each other and what they could find (Bennett 407).
Secondly in perseverance is the continuation of American’s desire to expand or Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny is a large part of what defines America in the 1800’s. Its the mind set that it is their destiny to expand west to California and to then persevere in this frontier. However after the Civil War the mind set of Manifest Destiny disappeared. Most people were focused on rebuilding the south, William Seward however was still very much stuck in the mind set of Manifest Destiny. He still believed, even after expanding all the way to the Pacific, that America was destined to keep expanding. Then no matter the harsh condition or enemies they’d still prevail. Eventually by sticking by the thought of Manifest Destiny William Seward persevered and claimed Alaska (Gold 94). Eventually Americans would buy into the idea of Manifest Destiny again and settle Alaska. Although this time around it isn’t as easy. The journey is much longer and much more harsh. Hardly any people going to Alaska could afford the boat ride there so most took the long walk through Canada (Bennett 408). Therefore this round of Manifest Destiny would be much more difficult. Eventually, through the years, the desire for Manifest Destiny would fade but those that did make it to Alaska will have persevered and continued that mind set of Manifest Destiny for a little bit longer.
Finally through the perseverance of William Seward in the negotiations of the treaty America obtained Alaska. When Russia offered to sell Alaska "Seward singlehandedly negotiated the agreement for its purchase at the price of 7.2 million dollars" (Dulles 157). Although it wasn't that easy, Seward also had to gain two thirds majority of congress and the president’s favor. By law Seward had to meet those requirements gaining, two thirds majority of congress would be the hard part; for President Johnson was already on Seward’s side (Dulles 157). Even worse was the fact that would be adjourned for a recess at the end of the week and they would resume after a week. Seward had a very limited amount of time to get all of his political influences together and begin gain supporters (Gold 101). The following night, after Seward and Edouard de Stoeckl, Russian minister to the U.S, had settled on the price, Seward suggested they get working on the treaty that night. So that night they got to work and wrote up the treaty (Russell 43). “The next morning Seward had a treaty drawn and ready to go to the Senate” (Russell 45). After some political strings were quickly pulled the Senate quickly ratified the treaty however the House was not as quick. At first the House Republicans refused to pay out the sum of 7.2 million. This caused a small delay but eventually the House would ratify the treaty too (Russell 45). Through the short amount of time Seward had he was able to negotiate price, draw up the treaty and pass it through congress, Seward persevered in the negotiations. In the end many things can define the American Spirit like intuition and perseverance. Then through certain events or people those ideas of American Spirit can be expressed. Through the intuition of one and the perseverance of many the Alaska Purchase has become an example of American Spirit. From the anticipation of new resources like oil, gold, plus the resources that were already know at the time, timber, fish and furs, intuition is shown through the expansion of the economy after their acquisition. Plus the increase from trade with Asia is reflected in the economy after gaining new pit stops to make the trip more profitable. Again America’s economy grows because of it and Seward’s intuition is shown. Next settling this new frontier wasn't easy, its climate and terrain provided plenty of challenges but through the mind set of Manifest Destiny these new American settlers persevered; along with William Seward whose determination eventually led him to persevere in his tight time restriction. Through intuition and perseverance the Alaska Purchase is a good example of the American Spirit.

...When I think of “American Spirit”, so many images come to my mind: everyone coming together on Memorial Day to honor those we have lost, raising the flag at Iwo Jima, and strangers helping strangers after the bombing at the Boston Marathon. American spirit has an effect on how Americans live today. It has only done our country good and brings people, friends and families together. When I looked up the definition, it surprised me how the word’s definitions fit how I think of the American Spirit. The first definition that I came across out of many was, “the vital principle or animating force within living beings”, this could not be any more true to me. Some people think of American spirit differently, so there is always going to be contrasting definitions....

Views of Native American and Euro American Culture on the Intersexed Child, or "Two Spirit."

...Views Of Native American And Euro American Culture On The Intersexed Child, Or "Two Spirit." Ryan Morris Thomas Edison State College Native Americans have viewed intersexed or “two-spirit” children with great respect for a very long time. They thought that children who were born with both male and female characteristics were blessed to have both of them. Most Native Americans were naturally very spiritual and believed that all children were a blessing. Thus, the name given to children who possessed both male and female traits was called “two-spirit.” “Therefore, many Native American religions, rather than stigmatising such persons, often looked to them as religious leaders and teachers (Williams).” Native Americans believed that these children were more beneficial to the group because they could perform the tasks of men and women. “A feminine male who preferred to do women's work (gathering wild plants or farming domestic plants) was logically expected to marry a masculine male, who did men's work (hunting and warfare). Because a family needed both plant foods and meat, a masculine female hunter, in turn, usually married a feminine female, to provide these complementary gender roles for economic survival. The gender-conforming spouse of two-spirit people did not see themselves as "homosexual" or as anything other than "normal"(Williams).” This makes a tremendous amount of sense because it allows the two-spirit individual to live a normal life that includes a family and...

A Moment of Understanding

...But, in class, I was hit by an inspiring sentence: nothing can surpass light except our mind since it is our mind that enables us to look back and foresee our future. These memorable words deepened my understanding of the power of mind. Looking back, we may encounter extreme fears, something we don’t want to bring up, and hope to be forever hidden. We may be trapped in adverse situations, where we are helpless and confused in face of the incomprehensible nature. But just as Einstein said, the only incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible. The short-lived biped on a two-bit planet can still move forward and make miracles, because the power of mind, which exceeds any speed in universe, can bring us faith and spirit. Eventually, this power could surpass our fears, and destroy all the negative conditions. This reminds me of the stories of some great minds, such as Steve Jobs, the legendary former CEO of Apple. When Steve had just released his first creation—the Macintosh, he got fired from Apple, the company he started. Very publicly out at that time, he lost the focus of his entire adult life. He really did not know what to do for a few months and even thought about running away from the valley, erasing all the failure experiences. However, thinking of the past, he found that he still loved what he did. “Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith.” Steve said. It is this faith in his mind that helped him defeat all the painful...

Ghost Do Exist

...Rakiiya Hearst December 3, 2012 X155 Ghost Do Exist A ghost is generally understood to be the disembodied spirit or soul of a once-living person. I do believe ghost exist. I’ve had many experiences with ghosts and hearing others tell their experiences, just makes me believe even more. I also believe that ghosts are real because of the research me and my sister have been doing since I started believing. There was a time when I was a non-believer and didn’t think ghost existed. My youngest sister is so fascinated with ghosts and pseudoscience. We share rooms, so when she watches TV (SyFy and Paranormal shows/movies) I have no choice but to watch it. That’s how I became a believer. It’s almost as if once you watch it or read about ghosts, you start having thoughts and strange things began happening. I start seeing things out the corner of my eye or even hearing the floor creak when I was home alone and there was no wind blowing (when it’s windy outside sometimes the wood on my house will creak). Most people believe that’s your mind playing tricks on you. But I believe that once you start believing in ghost then they’ll try to reach out to you and get your attention. One time, I was at home with my friend and I left my phone upstairs, on the bathroom sink. I was actually getting ready to flat iron my hair, but I went downstairs with my friend to keep her company while the curlers was heating up. We were sitting on the couch watching Punk’d on MTV. All of a sudden, we...

Mind, Body, Spirit

...I always try to leave people better than I find them. It sounds simple, but I truly value working hard, serving others and building friendships. These values come from my Catholic faith and family tradition. In this essay I will help you see who I am in light of these values, without creating a false impression of myself. In order to give you the clearest picture, I will describe my personal growth over the past year through three different facets of my life: Mind, Body, and Spirit. Mind: I have always had a creative mind and the ability to see the world differently. This helps me to make people laugh, build friendships, as well as solve problems in school. For example, during a recent Physics project, I was able to build the tallest tower in class using only an 8 ½” x 11” piece of paper and a 6” piece of masking tape. I may not be the smartest kid in the class, but sometimes I can see solutions to problems that others cannot. However, my creativity and free-thinking have not always been assets. From the time I was very young, focus has been a problem for me. Whenever I take a test I often find myself looking around the classroom at my peers rather than focusing on the test in front of me. I have quietly struggled with this my entire life. Last spring, I mentioned this to my parents and they took me to a specialist. In May, I was diagnosed with mild ADD for which I am now being treated and have already seen results. For example, the first time I took the...

"Hamlet's Ghost- to Believe or Not to Believe”

...questions about the characters' motives arise as these themes are portrayed. Questions regarding Hamlet's love for Ophelia or his sanity arise. However, these questions develop throughout the story. The most important question arises at the beginning of the story in Act 1, and affects Hamlet’s every thought and action thereafter. Is the King's ghost a good spirit, merely seeking justice or an evil spirit sent to corrupt Hamlet? Perhaps the ghost is genuinely that of the dead king, but the fact that the ghost uses Hamlet to exact revenge and demands he commit the mortal sin of murder, clearly shows it to be an evil, malicious demon from hell. During the era in which Hamlet was written, there was a common belief of demonic intrusion, and corruption by the devil. Even today, it is not too difficult to find people who will agree that specters are evil demons, sent up from the bowels of hell to corrupt and destroy the living. In fact, a recent CBS poll reveals that almost half of all Americans believe in evil spirits, and that the dead can return in certain places and situations (Alfano). Because of this belief, the appearance of the spirit, along with the assumption of its wickedness, would not be considered unusual then or now. Subsequently, it is believed that demons can take any form in order to deceive another into committing a sin which will cost them their soul. Often times this was written about in plays, such as William Shakespeare’s King Lear where the character Edgar, pretending...

Hamlet thinks that, “The spirit that [he] have seen may be a and the hath power T’ assume a pleasing shape…” (II. 627-629). ...Are Angels Real? Read This Story and Decide for Yourself An Angelic Encounter This is a personal story that happened to me. Some people read this and say that they believe I was visited by angels. Others say it is bogus. Read it and tell me what you think. The verse that corresponds to this first story is: Hebrews 13:2 - Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. I believe I encountered angels one day while on a bicycle ride. I'm not sure if God was testing me as the above scripture makes clear, but I am sure the meeting with these angels was not of this humanly world. I ride a road bicycle quite a lot. I used live out of town so my rides either headed back into town or way out toward the middle of nowhere on the highway headed to the next town. The highways of New Mexico are usually sparsely traveled. On this particular day, I was battling a headwind and it was a bit of struggle. I couldn't wait until I got out around 10 miles because the 10 miles home would be fast with the wind on my back. About 3 miles from home, I came up to the top of a small hill and noticed a white mini-van about 100 feet down the other side of the hill. As I approached it, I noticed that the young man standing next to the van had taken a badly deteriorated flat tire off the van and had his spare laying next to it. There were rubber and steel belts all over the place as the blow out appeared to be sudden and dangerous. I stopped...

Relaxation

...Relaxation Name: Institution: Course: Tutor: Date: Introduction The body and mind are interconnected such that proper functioning of the two cannot be achieved when either or both of them are too tired, stressed or simply un-relaxed. This paper discusses a relaxation process of the body and mind connection as applied on a friend. This friend, William is his name, is a college student who also works part-time in an accounting firm. William has lately complained how he is stressed both at school and at work, how he barely finds time to catch up with friends, how is often overworked and trying to balance his daily schedule. This is a guide to William on how he can engage in the process of relaxation for 20 minutes and get his energy and a relaxed body and mind back. 20-Minutes Relaxation Process “Relaxation is a state in which there is no movement, no effort, and the brain is quiet”(Lasater, 2011,p. 5). William’s case needs just that, that is,he needs to be at least in this state for him to feel stress free and free from the tight schedule he undergoes every day. This 20-minute guide to relaxation was applied to William one evening after coming from school and before going to his part-time work. The process is commonly known as Progressive Relaxation (PR) and was popularly applied by Bourne (1995) in his study of anxiety and phobia. PR basically aims at relieving the mind and body from anxiety and stress by quieting the mind and relaxing the body muscles...

...© Michael Lacewing Descar tes on mind-body independence and the inter ming ling thesis This handout follows the handout on ‘Descartes’ arguments for distinguishing mind and body’. You should read that handout first. How is the mind related to the body? While Descartes has argued that the mind as intellect is distinct from the body, we have just seen that the existence of the imagination complicates the picture. In Meditation VI, Descartes says nature…teaches me by these feelings of pain, hunger, thirst, etc., that I am not only lodged in my body, like a pilot in his ship, but, besides, that I am joined to it very closely and indeed so compounded and intermingled with my body, that I form, as it were, a single whole with it (159). Because ‘one single whole’ doesn’t sound like ‘two substances’, this claim and its implications for Descartes’ dualism are puzzling. THE ARGUMENT FROM BODILY SENSATIONS AND EMOTIONS Reflecting on perception, sensation and feeling, we notice that we perceive we have bodies, and that our bodies – this particular physical object that we have a close and unique relationship with – can be affected in many beneficial and harmful ways. This is brought to our attention through our bodily appetites, like hunger and thirst, through emotions, such as anger, sadness, love, and through sensations, like pain, pleasure, colours, sound and so on. All these experiences have their origins in the body. This doesn’t mean that mind and body aren’t distinct; in Meditation...

The Bondage Breaker

...Summary In this book the author Neil Anderson discusses the different forms of spiritual warfare that many people can encounter. The problems some people endure may be due to psychological or spiritual reasons. The Christian worldview perceives life through the scripture and scripture clearly teaches that supernatural, spiritual forces are at work in this world (Anderson, 2006). Anderson gives a description of what symptoms and signs to look for when counseling people. People often complain during counseling sessions of physical symptoms, which disappear after they resolve their personal and spiritual conflicts and find their freedom in Christ (Anderson, 2006). He further discusses how to counsel people and how to incorporate biblical understanding and scriptures in the counseling sessions. Anderson discusses what the Word of Gods says and describes how to break the bondage that the devil bestows on people. This book is designed to help people understand the different bondage that the devil has on some people. The author descriptions and examples of the counseling sessions catch the reader’s attention and draw them in to want to read more. The description that the author gives helps future counselors to understand how to help people who are controlled by the devil. The book helps strengthen you and help Christians to understand that there is power in the name of Jesus and we as Christians have power over the devil. We cannot rescue people from the bonds of spiritual blindness...
