...by SULTAN QABOOS UNIVERSITY (29 Dec 2014 03:14 GMT) The Pedagogical Possibilities of Covering Gilman’s Wallpaper Karla J. Murphy In his introduction to The Pedagogical Wallpaper, Jeffrey Andrew Weinstock notes how the pedagogical diversity of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wall-Paper” prompted him to collect essays for this book. He goes on to explain that “given the ubiquity of the text within various academic settings, I was also struck by the absence of attention to the text within pedagogical contexts. Despite the large (and steadily growing) body of criticism to the story, very little of it explicitly addresses its importance as a tool to facilitate learning or various ways in which to make use of the text in the classroom” (3). As a collection, Weinstock’s The Pedagogical Wallpaper contains informed, detailed, and diverse analysis that attempts to shore up the absence of “pedagogical possibilities” concerning Gilman’s transgressive short story (9). Among the contributors are a MOO space specialist, a Gilman scholar, a queer theorist, an existentialist, a formalist, and several reader/student-response theorists. Because each essayist presents a distinct critical perspective on Gilman’s text, each essay is likewise concerned with “how the narrative teaches and how to teach the narrative” (5). Thus, it seems to me that Weinstock’s The Pedagogical Wallpaper resonates with Pedagogy’s conviction that teaching is central to our work as scholars and educators, no matter...

...Chapter 2 Consumer Behaviour 2.1 Introduction “The consumer, so it is said, is the king… each is a voter who uses his money as votes to get the things done that he wants done” [Samuelson in Oxford Dictionary of 20th Century Quotations, 2000:274]. There is no question about it – consumers are paramount to the economy. All marketing decisions are based on assumptions about consumer behaviour [Hawkins et al., 2001:8, Mulkern, 2001:126; and Labbe, 2000:38]. In order to create value for consumers and profits for organisations, marketers need to understand why consumers behave in certain ways to a variety of product and services offered. In order to determine the factors that influence the preferences of the Millennial Generation, an understanding of how consumers generally think and behave in buying situations is vital. This chapter starts off with a model of consumer behaviour, which will serve as the foundation of this chapter’s structure. The first part of the model takes an in-depth look at internal, external and other influences that are relevant for the purpose of this study, whilst the second part examines the consumer decision-making process in detail. 2.2 Model of consumer behaviour Understanding consumer behaviour and “knowing customers,” have and never will be simple. Consumers may say one thing but do another. They may not be in touch with their deeper motivations. They may respond to influences that change their mind at the last minute....

...sections, introducing the major concepts in language study – from how children learn language to why men and women speak differently, through all the key elements of language. This fourth edition has been revised and updated with twenty new sections, covering new accounts of language origins, the key properties of language, text messaging, kinship terms and more than twenty new word etymologies. To increase student engagement with the text, Yule has also included more than fifty new tasks, including thirty involving data analysis, enabling students to apply what they have learned. The online study guide offers students further resources when working on the tasks, while encouraging lively and proactive learning. This is the most fundamental and easy-to-use introduction to the study of language. George Yule has taught Linguistics at the Universities of Edinburgh, Hawai’i, Louisiana State and Minnesota. He is the author of a number of books, including Discourse Analysis (with Gillian Brown, 1983) and Pragmatics (1996). “A genuinely introductory linguistics text, well suited for undergraduates who have little prior experience thinking descriptively about language. Yule’s crisp and thought-provoking presentation of key issues works well for a wide range of students.” Elise Morse-Gagne, Tougaloo College “The Study of Language is one of the most accessible and entertaining introductions to linguistics available. Newly updated with a wealth of material for practice and discussion, it will...

...1 6 CHAPTER Advertising, Publicity, and Sales Promotion In the summer of 1965, 17-year-old Fred DeLuca was trying to figure out how to pay for college. A family friend suggested that Fred open a sandwich shop—and then the friend invested $1,000 to help get it started. Within a month, they opened their first sandwich shop. From that humble start grew the Subway franchise chain with more than 33,000 outlets in 91 countries. Targeted advertising, timely publicity, and sales promotion have been important to Subway’s growth. For more than 10 years, memorable Subway ads featured Jared Fogle, a college student who was overweight but lost 245 pounds by only eating Subway’s low-fat sandwiches like the “Veggie Delite.” Jared says it was a fluke that he ended up in Subway’s ads. After all, he was recruited to do the ads because of good publicity that Subway got after national media picked up a story that Jared’s friend wrote about him in a college newspaper. Subway’s strategy at that time focused on its line of seven different sandwiches with under 6 grams of fat. The objective was to set Subway fare apart from other fast food, position it to appeal to health-conscious eaters, and spark new sales growth. Jared already knew he liked Subway sandwiches, but the “7 under 6” promotion inspired him to incorporate them into his diet. As soon as Jared’s ads began to run, word of his inspiring story spread and consumer awareness of Subway and its healthy fare increased. It’s always hard to...

...Learning with Cases INTRODUCTION The case study method of teaching used in management education is quite different from most of the methods of teaching used at the school and undergraduate course levels. Unlike traditional lecture-based teaching where student participation in the classroom is minimal, the case method is an active learning method, which requires participation and involvement from the student in the classroom. For students who have been exposed only to the traditional teaching methods, this calls for a major change in their approach to learning. This introduction is intended to provide students with some basic information about the case method, and guidelines about what they must do to gain the maximum benefit from the method. We begin by taking a brief look at what case studies are, and how they are used in the classroom. Then we discuss what the student needs to do to prepare for a class, and what she can expect during the case discussion. We also explain how student performance is evaluated in a case study based course. Finally, we describe the benefits a student of management can expect to gain through the use of the case method. WHAT IS A CASE STUDY? There is no universally accepted definition for a case study, and the case method means different things to different people. Consequently, all case studies are not structured similarly, and variations abound in terms of style, structure and approach. Case material ranges from small caselets (a few paragraphs...

...Watch The IMC Plan in Brazil, Japan, and Switzerland 1 Statement of Purpose Swatch (‗Swiss‘ + ‗watch‘) watches, created under the management of Nicolas Hayek, are fashion statements and pop-culture icons. They feature witty, outlandish designs that use intense colors and are youthful, provocative, stylish, and unpredictable. The mission of the IMC campaign is to tie the brand image with creative art in order to tell the brand story, strengthen Swatch‘s brand identity among the target audience (young students or professionals, aged 18-25) globally, and consistently incorporate different and relevant mediums (print ad, website, MTV – user-generated content, and online communities) to reach the target audience. The multi-country marketing analysis of The Swatch Group will aid in developing the IMC strategy and campaign for Swatch‘s CreArt (‗creativity‘ + ‗art‘) Collection in the following three countries: Brazil, Japan and Switzerland. When reading this, please be aware that Swatch did not impose an integrated marketing campaign in Brazil; rather, they only held one event and communicated to customers through Twitter. Therefore, the Brazil section is composed mostly of what The Swatch Group should do in order to meet their objectives. Furthermore, the cultural dimensions and components that will affect consumers shopping intention in each country will also be analyzed. Finally, based on the differences or similarities among the three countries, recommendations, including the cost-efficiency...
