“To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others” –
Anthony Robbins
The online communication skills quiz I selected was found at mindtools.com. The results of the quiz that I took was 61%, and the summary part of that quiz indicates that, those with this score have excellent communication skills, understands their role as a communicator, both when sending messages, and when receiving them. People in this category anticipate problems, and choose the right ways of communicating. They are respected for their ability to communicate clearly, and are appreciated for their listening skills (Mindtools, 2001). The Mindtools.com communication skills quiz indicated that I need to work on my listening skills. The quiz question I scored lower was on, “When someone's talking to me, I think about what I'm going to say next to make sure I get my point across correctly.” I often think of what I will say next instead of really listening to what the other person is saying. In many ways, not to truly listen is being disrespectful. If we listen to each other, we will discover we agree on many issues. “By taking responsibility for successful communication through active and reflective listening, you can become more successful at those activities that depend on communication, including your personal and professional life”(O’Rourke, p. 227). The analysis indicated needed steps that good communicators use the KISS ("Keep It Simple and Straightforward") principle. By using the KISS principle, several effective communication skills are applied. Wasting time in conveying information that isn't necessary is eliminated, as well

Memo: Group Communication

...| ABC, Inc. | Memo To: | Ms. Jane Doe | From: | Abigail Shearer | CC: | Learning Team A | Date: | March 23, 2015 | Re: | Group Communication Position | | | I have prepared this memo to help you in your new position. I understand that you have limited experience in group communication. Group communication skills are essential for your new position. My teammates and I have discussed what skills and tips we have absorbed during our time at ABC, Inc. and hope to provide you with information and suggestions that will be useful in your transition. A common barrier that exists in group communication is called bypassing. Basically, this is when different people interpret words and phrases differently. Sometimes the meaning of a word or phrase may seem completely obvious to you and you may assume that other people will interpret the meaning the same way. Very often, however, this is not the case. For example, you may tell someone that the department’s account has been “seriously overdrawn.” Of course, you know what you mean by “seriously overdrawn” but somebody else would not be able to interpret what you mean by “seriously.” You must always make sure that you use very clear, specific language. Be sure that you reiterate and clarify what you mean. Another common barrier that can occur in group communication is called an allness statement. These are essentially untrue generalizations. To state “women are smarter than men” is an example of an allness statement...

...Analyzing Messages Jeffrey Richardson COMM/470 November 22nd, 2011 Mr. Michael Zervos Analyzing Messages In today’s technological based world, communicating is a very important part of our daily lives. Whether it is a phone call, text, email or even a voicemail, the ways people or companies communicate is what makes our country run on a daily basis. Effective communication, either virtual or natural, is an integral part of our daily lives. As an employee for a major satellite network (Dish Network) here in Jacksonville, I know good communication is a very important part of my professional life. As a Crew Leader for technicians, my communication skills allow me to provide good customer service at all times. As a Crew Leader for a company that provides thousands of customer’s entertainment every minute of the day, I know that effective communicator also means effective an effective leader because an effective leader provides clear, accurate, and relevant information that employees can use to their benefits. But for a communication to be effective, according to our textbook, one must be aware of the various components of the communication process which are: sender, receiver, message, channel, feedback, environment and noise (Roebuck & McKenney, 2006). In this paper, I will concentrate on three messages that I received and responded at Dish Network. As a Crew Leader, I am receiving phone calls and voicemails on a daily basis. Since I am mainly in the field for over...

Communication

...With this week’s assignment we have been asked to evaluate our communication skills if we are comfortable speaking to others in large groups and etc. I will be sure to address which form of assessment I used and how it influenced me, discussing my communication gaps that I have. In addition I will be describing training that I could you and that I have used in communication, and specific areas that I need to work on. Lastly I will be analyzing how I can improve my communication skills and how it can apply to my current and hopefully future professions. The assessment that I used is one that was provided for us through our instruction. The assessment was one that had a series of questions asking about how we address a group if we take the time to plan out what I will be saying. Do I sit down and write out some facts that could be very important and if there are key points that I would like to hit while communicating with someone. The assessment was sure to ask some of the key factors that were needed in order to figure out how effective I am with staff and trying to get my point across. It even took the time to ask the hard hitting questions of after I complete a task of sending out a email to staff do I take the time to look over it and proof read it, just so that I am able to catch any errors or if I was truly able to get my point across. The one point I thought was relevant about the assessment, was that it took time to see if you had outside ideas on how you could...

The Art of Leadership

...Clayton Moore December 7, 2012 The Art of Leadership Marcus Chaney Leadership I have played football my whole life so I have been around a lot of leadership and developed some of my own leadership skills. I have always felt like I was a pretty good leader, but after this semester I have greatly improved on many of my leadership skills. Although I still have some weaknesses when it comes to leadership, this semester has helped me learn a lot about myself as a leader and as a person. Over the semester I learned that I have much more leadership potential than I thought. Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs them in a way that makes the unit more cohesive and coherent. Obviously, leadership can be learned but, the skills and knowledge processed by a leader can be influenced by their traits such as beliefs, ethics, and character. Before this semester I felt that I possessed many of the traits that a good leader would need to have. I am a very motivated person and I pride myself on my beliefs. Throughout the semester I learned how important it is to use my motivation to motivate others and to inspire them to become the best they can be at whatever it is they are doing. In my case, most of the time I am leading on the football field. I am constantly pushing my teammates to their limits and helping them achieve, not only their individual goals but, the goals of our team. I also learned that while it is important...

Analyzing Messages

...Analyzing Messages Randy Koval COMM/470 April 19, 2016 Rosalind Raby Analyzing Messages When analyzing messages, the Basic Communications Model is the starting point for analyzing the communications process in terms of the intent of the sender, the needs of the receiver, and the elements of the communications environment. This paper will analyze three business related messages that one has sent or received and analyze these messages using the communication process. This analysis will include the descriptions of the purpose, sender, receiver, message, environment, technology, noise and feedback. While analyzing the messages, one will determine whether the explanations of the messages were appropriate as well as explain how the content, media and technology of the feedback are appropriate for the purpose of the audience. Message 1 (Face-to-Face) The first business related message is face to face between me and my immediate supervisor. My supervisor and I had a meeting in her office to discuss scheduling for upcoming projects which is the purpose of the message. My supervisor (sender) asked me how I (receiver) want to schedule staff accordingly in order to efficiently be able to manage the projects over the weekend. I responded with my ideas as to go about scheduling in order to efficiently staff for the projects. My supervisor then agreed with my proposal and I went on to schedule the staff after coming to our conclusions. Given the environment and purpose, the explanation...
