ONE OF THE LEAST EXPENSIVE AND MOST READILY AVAILABLE ANTACIDS IS NO FARTHER AWAY THAN THE KITCHEN CABINET. SODIUM BICARBONATE, OR BAKING SODA, NEUTRALIZES ACID QUICKLY. THE BAKING SODA BURP IS A SIGN THAT THIS ANTACID IS WORKING; THE BURP IS CAUSED BY RELEASE OF CARBON DIOXIDE GAS, WHICH OCCURS WHEN THE ANTACID NEUTRALIZES THE ACID.

Although sodium bicarbonate may provide a short-term solution to indigestion, too much bicarbonate can wreak havoc with the body's acid-base balance and lead to metabolic alkalosis. The high sodium content may also cause problems for people with heart failure or high blood pressure.

Description

Antacids are taken by mouth to relieve heartburn, sour stomach, or acid indigestion. They work by neutralizing excess stomach acid. Some antacid combinations also contain simethicone, which may relieve the symptoms of excess gas. Antacids alone or in combination with simethicone may also be used to treat the symptoms of stomach or duodenal ulcers.
With larger doses than those used for the antacid effect, magnesium hydroxide (magnesia) and magnesium oxide antacids produce a laxative effect. The information that follows applies only to their use as an antacid.
Some antacids, like aluminum carbonate and aluminum hydroxide, may be prescribed with a low-phosphate diet to treat hyperphosphatemia (too much phosphate in the blood). Aluminum carbonate and aluminum hydroxide may also be used with a low-phosphate diet to prevent the formation of some kinds of kidney stones. Aluminum hydroxide may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Antacids neutralize stomach acid. Although antacids cannot completely neutralize stomach acid, they can raise the pH level in the stomach from 2 (very acidic) to between 3 and 4. This increase neutralizes almost 99% of stomach acid and significantly relieves symptoms for most people. Antacids provide relief more quickly than H2 blockers, but H2 blockers provide longer-lasting relief.

Most antacid products contain one or more of four active ingredients: aluminum salts, magnesium salts, calcium carbonate, and sodium bicarbonate. All products provide relief in a minute or less, but products vary in how long they provide relief—from only about 10 minutes to more than an hour and a half.

Aluminum hydroxide is used for the relief of heartburn, sour stomach, and peptic ulcer pain and to promote the healing of peptic ulcers
Aluminum hydroxide is a relatively safe, commonly used antacid. However, aluminum may bind with phosphate in the digestive tract, reducing phosphate levels in the blood and causing weakness and a loss of appetite. The risk of these side effects is greater in alcoholics and in people with kidney disease, including those receiving dialysis. Aluminum hydroxide may also cause constipation.
Magnesium hydroxide is a more effective antacid than aluminum hydroxide. Bowel movements usually remain regular if only four doses of 1 to 2 tablespoons a day are taken; more than four doses a day may cause diarrhea. Because small amounts of magnesium are absorbed into the bloodstream, people with kidney damage should take magnesium hydroxide only in small doses. Many antacids contain both magnesium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide.

A calculation revealed that the Equate brand was the better choice, since overall it could eliminate more hydrochloric acid than the Tums brand per dollar.
