Having kids is a blessing. Being a parent is a job itself; it can be very demanding and it comes with many different duties and difficulties. There are some parents in the world who does not love their kids or show them very much attention, and there are other parents in the world who love their kids very much and raise their kids to be good people as they grow up. Most parents go out of their way to provide for their children and they work extremely hard so that their family can live comfortably. In the story “Anything Helps” the reader meets Bit who is a drunken, homeless man who lost his wife to drug overdose. No one likes a thief. Most people know exactly what they would do if they saw someone stealing from them. Most people would confront the person, call the cops, or maybe even take it upon themselves to handle the situation; all of these seem like simple solutions on how to handle a stranger who is stealing from you, but how does one handle the situation if the one who is stealing is one of your own children? This is the problem that Wayne is facing in the story “Thief.” Wayne is a hard working man who tries his best to provide for his family. Wayne has jar that he puts money

...Analysis * We start out with a short summary: Write a short summary to show, in chronological order, what the text is about. Many will choose to put the analytical elements required into their summary, which makes it look a bit more professional. This way of writing an analysis makes it easier to keep to the essay genre. However, many of you may find it quite a lot easier to simply write a summary first, and then write an analysis at the end by making a list of the points required. It is up to you. * Point of view. When you want to find out a novel or short story’s point of view, you also analyze your own experiences and encounters with the characters and events. The way the story is told, the author’s chosen narrator(s), will play a large part in how much insight you get into the story and its characters. In other words: how well you will get to know the characters and the events relies a lot on the narrator (fortelleren). Therefore you should take a close look at the novel’s point of view, and write a paragraph about how the point of view allowed you to understand, like or identify with the characters, the events and the content in general. It is particularly common to write in the first and third person, yet, omniscient or God-like perspective or point of view is also frequently used. (“Guds” perspektiv - allvitende) It can also be that a story is narrated in the third person perspective, but contains an omniscient perspective as well. 1. First...

The Sorcerer's Stone Characters

...Character analysis The characters I have chosen for my character analysis are Vernon and Petunia Dursley. I know you only need to pick one character, but I didn’t feel right just picking one or the other. For that simple fact that they feed off each other’s fixed mindset’s. Which is one of the things I will talk about in my essay. However, before we get to that I will tell you a little about the characters individually. I will start by talking about the characteristics of each then to tie it all together I will talk about both together. I will do this while providing examples from not just Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone By: J.K. Roweling but Carol Dweck’s Mindset the New Psychology of Success. We will start off with Vernon, the first...

...the writer in specific places. Your comments may be on anything: you might suggest that a paragraph is too long or too confusing; you might comment on a particular quote and suggest that the writer needs to frame it or explain it more; you might highlight a particular sentence and comment that it is wordy or hard to understand. You might also leave comments about what you think is working well. There is no required number of comments that you must leave, but remember that this feedback is what you will use when we complete our group conferences, and it is always good to have talking points ready. Second: Answer the following questions. Again, this is what you will use to give your group members feedback during the conference, so while you don’t have to complete long write-ups, you do want to have specific talking points that you can share. Summary: Does the writer provide an adequate summary of the film? If a reader hadn’t seen the movie, would he/she have a sense of what the movie is about, the characters and basic plot, and a bit about the style or feel? What areas of the summary can the writer expand? What aspects of the summary need clarification? How long is the summary? Does it feel too long/too in comparison to the analysis? (Remember, the analysis is the main focus here, not the summary. The summary should only be long enough to provide the necessary context readers need to understand the analysis points.) Organization: How is the paper organized? ...

...Q1. Which tool or technique from the above list would be most effective for a cryptanalyst to use to decipher a text encrypted with the Caesar cipher, and why? I personal like all the ways that I saw in the above list. I think that a cryptanalyst would likely to use the Histogram. I personally think it is easier to read and the information that it gives is very valuable. It gives you the frequency and percent on how many times a certain character was used. Which if I think if I was a cryptanalyst this may help me out in deciphering the encrypted text. Q2. What do you notice about the histogram results when text is encrypted with the Vigenère cipher in comparison to the results of the Caesar cipher? Why is this the case? I really don’t see too much change however, what I have noticed from the first histogram using Caesar cipher vs. using Vigenère I noticed that E is no longer the letter with the most characters used like it was in the Caesar cipher. As a matter of fact it is between L, and K and really doesn’t give a character to use to help decipher it. We know that the letter could be a J but how many words or even phases have a lot of Js in its message? It seems that Vigenere is the better and more difficult cipher to use. Q3. There is an error in the following ciphertext representation of this quote, what is it? What should the correct ciphertext be? (Hint: when using the CrypTool there are several ways to decode one that you can use is “Playfair” encipher...

Tex Tanalysis of a Matter of Timing

...Text Analysis: A MATTER OF TIMING by Charlotte Armstrong Summary The story, called A Matter of Timing, is by Charlotte Armstrong. Charlotte Armstrong was an American author. She has written over 28 novels and also has worked in The New York Times. The story is about a women named Jane who after visiting a grocery store experiences something unusual in the store’s parking lot. As she is trying to get to her car a man is standing in front of her, asking to get through the man suddenly turns around and threatens her with a knife and trying to make Jane get into her car and drive him somewhere. As the man was standing in front of her, Jane was trying to find her car keys in the bag. But then suddenly instead of taking her car keys out of the bag, Jane took some of the pepper she had bought and threw it in the man’s eyes. The man screamed and fell on the ground and finally other people started noticing the man and Jane and the police was called. The story is written in medias res, it has no background of the story and its characters, no information or introduction. It starts right in the middle of actions. The text has a bit of, both, formal and informal register. The story is written in 3rd person narrator (limited omniscient narrator) because pronouns (he, she, they) are used but 1st person pronouns (I, You) are only used in direct speech and the story seems to be written from somebody else’s point of view, like somebody that could`ve been right there when the actions took...

...them happy. He is very clueless to her emotions regarding this life changing event and the feelings she is experiencing. He also says that he doesn’t want her to do it if she doesn’t want to. "You've got to realize," he said, "that I don't want you to do it if you don't want to. I'm perfectly willing to go through with it if it means anything to you." I think the conflict is very significant as Jig is looking for a connection regarding the baby and clearly there is little hope for one as the insensitive American is frustrating her. I find from the text there are very similar elements of symbolism, metaphor, allusion and allegory apply sort of mixed and sprinkled into most of the stories I have read. I really enjoyed the symbolism and how the Hills stood for life giving and yet highlights her aloneness and emotional disconnect to the American. Ernest Hemingway writing style leaves hints throughout the scene and yet never directly states the plot of the story. “The Gift of Magi” by William Sydney Porter invigorates the mind and redefines irony. I very much enjoyed this story as it is about two very selfless people sacrificing for the other to get a Christmas present. The core conflict in the story is that it's Christmas Eve and Della and Jim...

Performing Arts

...Live Theatrical Performance Helen Robinson HUM/103 Intructor Bjorn Mercer March 10, 2013 Abstract This article gives an analysis of a theatre performance Les Miserable directed by Tom Hooper. It analyses on the best aspects of the play that was performed on stage. The play is a musical and an acting performance with the main character being Jean Valean. An analysis of the plot is given and also the sub plots with the characters featured. The performance by Les Miserable is one that has combined the aspects of art and theatre performance in the most professional manner. The director Tom Hooper has used the musical genre in this performance and this makes it the most pleasing aspect of the performance. Not many directors are able to work on such a master piece. The dialogues are not spoken like it happens in other performance, they are sung in beautiful lyrics that are able to arouse the audience emotions more than it would be in a spoken dialogue. The musical aspect runs down and the most enjoyable part is when the character Eponine sings two songs that feature Samantha Barks. The performance is therefore able to capture the audience since not just mere monologues and spoken dialogues among the actors are involved. The audience can view the inner voice of an actor he or she is left all alone on stage. The transition from one scene to the next is carried out in a perfect way that is not too fast creating suspense within the audience...

Analysis and Interpretation of "Elephant" + Different Types of Endings

...Analysis and interpretation of “Elephant” + different types of endings Part A Polly Clark wrote ”Elephant” in 2006. It is a short story about a man, who writes biographies of female pop singers. He is having a writer’s block in the text and later begins to write false events to the biographies. His wife is also trying to get pregnant. The text is in a restricted third person, which means that the narrator can see everything but only hear the thoughts of one person, the main character William. That also means that we have to guess what the other character thinks, if needed of course. The text mainly contains description, but there is a small amount of dialogue between William and his wife. The narrator finds the events in the story boring and there is not anything exciting about William. The narrator is a bit unreliable because he has pre-interpreted William’s life and therefore describes it the way he does. That could change if it was another narrator or in first person. William is an adult male in his late twenties or early thirties. He is married to a woman named Ginny, who works in an office, maybe as an assistant, and he works as a biography writer. He writes biographies of female pop singers who are still alive, which is not what he would have preferred. He would have preferred to write biographies of male actors, but someone got there first. He and Ginny could live either in Great Britain or in the USA or some third country, but there is nothing in the text to indicate...

...physician who is trying to treat Jane for being “nervous”. Although his intentions are good, he goes about it in the wrong way. Dismissing any wishes she may have and not allowing her to express her feelings and or opinions. For example, Jane wants to be in a different room. The narrator states, “I don’t like our room a bit. I wanted the one downstairs that opened onto the piazza and had roses all over the window, and such pretty old-fashioned chintz hanging! But John would not hear of it.” (pg. 346) Making an assumption from what Jane reveals, she is not able to care for her newborn child and has now fallen in to an extremely emotionally unstable state. "It is fortunate Mary is so good with the baby. Such a dear baby! And yet I cannot be with him, it makes me so nervous." (pg. 346-47. Gilman) Her husband, John, and the other people in her life, don't think she should do anything. She likes to write but John does not allow that so she sneaks it. "There comes John, and I must put this away - he hates to have me write a word”(pg. 346). Freud, Jung and Lacan psychoanalytic approach with mental illnesses were different in many ways. Comparative Analysis of Two Works

...Comparative analysis Comparative Analysis of two works E M. Tu English Literature 125 M V 05 August 2012 Comparative analysis Comparative Analysis of two works The creative process is often filled with emotions, and throughout it, it is not uncommon to experience the whole gauntlet of highs, lows and everything in between. The poems, “poetry” and “constantly risking absurdity” are two works that are filled with similarities in the creative process and yet they are very different. These two works give insight to the creative process from each poet’s perspective. They are both excited by it, but they achieve their goal through traveling different routes. As much as they like and appreciate the finished product you cannot help but believe that they are just as fascinated, captivated and even enthralled by the process itself. The creative process for them is a lot like certain aspects of life, and it is demonstrated in their work. Ferlinghetti’s experience is not one made up purely of joy, in fact; it is filled with struggle, but it is a journey in search of joy and of beauty. He must take risks and is willing to do so in pursuit of the desired goal every time he performs. He starts his poem in a manner using words that immediately catches your attention. You are immediately drawn in by his description of the risks that a poet must take each time he performs before an audience. There is always the possibility that he may end up looking like a fool (risking absurdity)...

The Littlest Hitler

...The Littlest Hitler by Ryan Boudinot Literary Analysis The Littlest Hitler is an American short story, which, in brief, is about Davy, a young boy who has chosen to dress up as Hitler for the annual Halloween parade at his school. When his classmates find out what kind of person Hitler actually was, Davy suddenly feels excluded in his class, and he regrets his choice of costume. Davy’s guilt does not go away, and he ends up reaching his arm into the stove. While the major focus in The Littlets Hitler is on Davy and the guilt he is feeling, the symbols are significant for out interpretation of the story. It is obvious that Davy is not aware of most people’s hatred towards Hitler. As a kid he might not have the same background knowledge as grown-ups do, which is the reason why he feels such an excitement about wearing his costume. He was just thinking, like every other fourth-grader would do, that it was a scary and obvious costume. What gets clear through the story is that Davy suddenly feels a lot of guilt because of the costume that he is wearing. When his teacher, Mrs Thompson asks him if he can tell the class what he knows about Hitler, he clearly does not want to tell what kind of people Hitler killed. Instead he replies that he killed “everybody”. He does not want to spell out, that he actually killed millions of Jews. The reason to this might be Lisette’s costume as a Jew, and therefor he does not want to get a bad reputation among his school friends. Moreover...

Thesis- the Gift of the Magi

...affects her looks. If ever there were a story with the message that all you need to be happy is love, this is it. Sacrifice The two main characters in "Gift of the Magi" are a husband and wife who give up their most precious possessions to be able to afford gifts for each other on Christmas Eve. The story seems to be all about sacrifice. We watch Della go through the process of deciding to make the sacrifice and going through with it, only to discover that her husband has made the same sacrifice. The story's narrator assures us that in their willingness to give up all they have, they have proven themselves the wisest of all gift-givers. It might remain unclear, though, exactly what their sacrifice has accomplished, or how it has affected them. Wealth In many ways, "Gift of the Magi" is a story about what it means for something to be valuable. Does something's value lie in how much money it is worth? Or are other things more valuable than money? The main characters are very poor – this is repeatedly emphasized – and yet the story suggests that their love for each other makes them very rich. It is that love, which motivates them to give up the only things of monetary (or personal) value they have to buy presents for each other. Perhaps their poverty is what enables them to appreciate what really matters. Women and Femininity The main character of...
