...history speaks about the Apache, they almost always refer to the warriors and leaders, Geronimo, Cochise and Mangas Colorado. There is much more to the Apache history that affects the land and culture in contemporary times. Whether referred to as a murderous renegades by the United States Army or as a heroic warriors by the Bedonkohe and the Chiricahua Apaches, they are unwilling to compromise the land they love. They did whatever was necessary to defend their interest, even if at times and it put them at odds with the Spaniards, Mexicans, the United States and ultimately other tribes. Geronimo has been given many descriptions but was mostly known for his guerilla warfare that kept a quarter of the United States occupied with a band...

...Alcohol and the Apache Reservation Frank A. Parkinson Grand Canyon University RN-BSN Alcohol and the Apache Reservation The Apache Indian Reservation is a place I am very familiar with. As a registered nurse I have worked and served the people of this area for nearly three years now. I also grew up in the area surrounding the reservation so I have first hand knowledge of the health status of this community. These people are part of the American Indian or Alaska Native group and I will be using the data from these groups as well as direct data from the White Mountain Apache Tribe to compare the health of these people against that of the national average. The primary focus on this essay with is that of the disease of Alcoholism that plagues these people. The tribe is extremely impoverished and well below averages on education. Department of Labor statistics indicated that Navajo and Apache Counties were the sixth and seventh poorest counties in the nation. With a median per capita income less than 50 percent of that of the State of Arizona, 40 percent of the residents of these two counties were living below the poverty line. Unemployment on the reservation peaked at 61 percent during this time—ten times the state average and many times the national rate. ...Apache Indians The Apache Indian tribes have gone thru many changes thru the years. Most every area of their lives have been affected and changed. How, when, and where they live has changed a lot over the years. In the past, their ways were the very set, and the same for many years. Now like most Americans, their ways have changed, they are not as structured, and they have changes frequently. Many Apache Indians now live in the Midwest. They live in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, but they did not always live there. Some of the Apache Indians have had to move across the border into New Mexico. The Plains Apache Indians live in what is now Oklahoma, but their traditions are different from the other tribes. Many Plains Apaches got captured by the other Apache Indians tribes. The Apache Indian population today is about 30,000 Indians. Currently, there are 13 different Apache tribes in the U.S, in 5 different states. The Apache Indians must obey American law enforcement because they do not live on Indian reservations, which means they are legal American...

...The Cocopah Indian Tribe is one of the numerous Native American tribes of Arizona that is continuously active. Its strong sense of culture and participation in its surrounding civilization has helped it thrive as one of the most well known tribes still in existence. The Cocopah’s extensive history as an early Yuman community and its current cultural influence in Arizona make it acknowledged as both an intriguing tribe and major source of the state’s ethnic identity. The Cocopah Indian Tribe of Arizona, otherwise called “the River People,” originated in lands along the Colorado River and Lower Colorado River as one of the several descendant tribes of the Yuman-speaking people (“About Us”). The name “Cocopah” derives from the tribe’s name for itself, which in the Cocopah language is “Kokwapa” (“Facts For Kids”). The tribe was originally and still is located throughout the Colorado River Basin in Arizona, the southernmost part of Baja California, and the northern border of Mexico (“Facts For Kids”). The time during which the Cocopah Tribe was formed cannot be very accurately determined, mainly due to the fact that its people had no written language. However, Spanish explorer Hernando de Alarcon’s expedition through the Colorado River region in 1540 is one of the first recorded sightings of the tribe’s existence (“About Us”). He along with other explorers who interacted with these people can be credited with collecting the information currently known about the beginnings of the tribe...

...introduction of Apache and the issues under consideration. Apache Corporation was conceived 50 years ago. Its gestation, with no small amount of planning, has yielded a company that is built to last. Apache was formed in 1954 with $250,000 of investor capital with the simple concept of becoming a significant and profitable oil company. Today, Apache Corporation is one of the world's top independent oil and gas exploration and production companies. The journey to this point was fueled by Apache's contrarian approach to business. Apache Corporation is an independent energy company that explores for, develops and produces natural gas, crude oil and natural gas liquids. Apache’s mission is to grow a profitable global exploration and production company in a safe and environmentally responsible manner for the long-term benefit of our shareholders. The value’s Apache was founded upon — integrity, respect, individual initiative, innovation, and striving for excellence. Apache's continued growth and global expansion depend on these values to guide strategies, decisions and actions into the future. Apache had just closed on the acquisition on Repsol in Egypt’s Western desert and, along with its partner Shell Overseas Holdings, had also acquired Fletcher Challenge Energy, for a combined cost of $1 billion. The value of such acquisitions, however, depended in large part on the future prices of oil and gas. To decrease its exposure to oil and gas price volatility, Apache had begun a limited...

...The Company also had approximately $118 million accrued as of December 31, 2011, for an insurance contingency as a member of Oil Insurance Limited (OIL). This insurance co-op insures specific property, pollution liability, and other catastrophic risks of the Company. As part of its membership, the Company is contractually committed to pay a withdrawal premium if we elect to withdraw from OIL. Apache does not anticipate withdrawal from the insurance pool; however, the potential withdrawal premium is calculated annually based on past losses and the nature of our asset base. Insurance Program We maintain insurance coverage that includes coverage for physical damage to our assets, third party liability, workers’ compensation, employers’ liability, sudden pollution, and other risks. Our insurance coverage includes deductibles that must be met prior to recovery. Additionally, our insurance is subject to exclusions and limitations, and there is no assurance that such coverage will adequately protect us against liability from all potential consequences and damages. Our current insurance policies covering physical damage to our assets provide $1 billion in coverage per occurrence. These policies also provide sudden pollution coverage. Coverage for damage to our U.S. Gulf of Mexico assets specifically resulting from a named windstorm, however, is subject to a maximum of $250 million per named windstorm, which includes a self-insured retention of 40 percent of the losses above a $100...

...Baum Professor Noble-Ward HIST170D-4840 24 February 2015 Apache women and Polygamous settlers "Apachie women and their white husband, Arizonia 1879," notes the handwritten caption for this hand-colored portrait. That same year the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a ruling against polygamy. "Everything there has changed," wrote T. S. Hitchcock, a retired dentist, who submitted this photo. This photo was captioned by Margaret G. Zackowitz in the National Geographic stock, titled, “Family Portrait”. In 1870, with Brigham Young, the leader of the Mormon indoctrinate in Utah, the Mormons gain power politically, ushering the idea of polygamy in the West, claims New Perspectives on the West article, on PBS.org. Though the Native Americans became citizens in 1871, not sovereign nations, (PBS), many were destitute and hungry with little resources after their land had been seized, now struggling on reservations. Because the Apaches were known to be polygamists, many sold women into arranged marriages where the father in the tribe would obtain a dowry from male settlers in the Southwest. (Francis,Valentine). This can be interpreted as a life of slavery or otherwise today known as “human trafficking”, hard labor, and a lifetime of despair. Though the Apache women were formally treated with elite status, the late 1800’s brought change in the value system as the tribes began to starve and dwindle. (Francis,Valentine). The Apache women were even looked down upon by their own tribe, doing...

...Choctaw (alternatively spelled Chahta, Chactas, Tchakta, Chocktaw, and Chactaw) are Native American people originally from the Southeastern United States (Oklahoma, California, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas,Alabama). The Choctaw language belongs to the Muskogean linguistic group. Henry Halbert, a historian, suggests that their name is derived from the Choctaw phrase Hacha hatak(river people). (“Choctaw,” n.d.) Choktaw is the approved, anglicized form of the tribal name Chahta (Chäh’ta). It seems to have been first applied to the tribe about the beginning of eighteenth century and is found spelled in a number of different ways in historical records. It has been suggested that the name Choctaw is from the Spanish word chato, meaning "flat," descriptive of the ancient tribal custom of flattening the forehead of male infants. (Wright, Muriel H..; A Guide to the Indian Tribes of Oklahoma) In the 19th century the Choctaw and the United States (US) agreed to nine treaties and, by the last three, the US gained vast land cessions and deracinated most Choctaw west of the Mississippi River to Indian Territory. They were the first Native Americans forced under the Indian Removal Act. Many place names in the Southeast all the way to the Atlantic Coast are undoubtedly of Choctaw origin. In Oklahoma, the Choctaw are one of the Five Civilized Tribes and have been associated in history with the Chickasaw, a closely related tribe. (“Choctaw,” n.d.) Those Choctaw who removed to the Indian Territory...
