The fourth artifact will be a political cartoon about GMOs using humor as a rhetorical strategy. Using the means of “political humor and particularly its core modality of parody are essential for an engaged, sustainable, democratic public culture.” (Hariman, 248). Instead of being political, we took this idea and transformed it to speak on behalf of GMOs and the dangers it imposes. Using the say genre of humor as in political cartoon to dramatize the effects of GMOs on the food that we eat and will eat if nothing is done to change it. I will demonstrate what could happen in the future if we don’t start recognizing the dangers GMOS have, and the importance of requiring labels on all food that contain GMOS. “Parody works in great part by exceeding tacit limits on expression the appropriate, the rational but it does so to reveal limitations that others would want to keep hidden.” (Hariman, 248) because, as stated, this use of humor exceeds normal limitations and uses exaggeration to made the claim intended. We feel that this is an important message because, soon enough this will actually be less obscure of an idea, and instead it will be much more feasible to do. The technology behind GMOS has gotten better, and will only continue to do so. This will impact people’s sense of Ethos because this message is quite powerful in terms of what the future holds in terms of food. It is scary to think about how much your food could be altered, or even how it’s being alerted today. We believe it will leave people thinking about the future, and hopefully change the way people buy food in order to make the change we need through required GMO labels.
