Directions: Think of a misunderstanding you experienced when communicating with someone else at work. Then fill in the blanks of the chart below.

Misunderstanding 1
Who was the sender? Myself-a packer
Who was the receiver? Spanish non-bilingual employee-an inspector
What was the message? Instruction on which product to inspect
What channel was used to send the message? Face-to-face verbal communication
What was the misunderstanding that occurred? The employee didn’t understand the instructions because of a language barrier. Both of us were non-bilingual.

How could the misunderstanding have been avoided? I should have had a translator before I started conveying the message.

1. What did you learn about the communication process from this activity?
What I learned from this activity is that the most common elements within the communication process were not enough for my message to be received properly by the Spanish-only speaking employee. My packer position was above inspectors which allowed me to correct any mistakes that the inspectors had made when inspecting the product. It also allowed me to give the inspectors direction as to what and how to inspect a product. I didn’t speak any Spanish and the inspector didn’t speak any English. The communication process needed to have an extra element included--translation. There are times when the most common elements of the communication process are not enough or need to be enhanced.
