Task 1 - Produce a questionnaire and interview twenty people (16 -19 Age Group Only). Conduct primary and secondary research for a selected product/service making use of identifiable sampling techniques.
A sample is a piece of a whole; you cannot research the whole market, so you pick a sample. An example of a non-profitable sample could be dimensional sampling this is an extension to quota sampling. The researcher takes into account several characteristics e.g. gender, age, income, residence and education. An example of a profitable sample could be systematic random sampling. With the systematic random sample, there is an equal chance (probability) of selecting each unit (every nth person) from within the population when creating the sample.
For my research I've chosen to use a non-profitable sampling methods simply because I am targeting young people on how music influences them. So I have specific age groups (16-19), which are allowed to answer the questionnaire in order to make my research more reliable. With my questions I've used four different methods in order to make my questionnaires more do able and reliable. I used opened questionnaires, which allows my samples to elaborate on their answers. I've also used closed question such as 'do you listen to music?’ as yes or no question are easy to tally up. I've used scaled questions in order to easily tally up and give general quantitative data and finally I have also used dichotomous which is the use fixed-alternative questions that can only be answered in one of the two indicated ways, such as 'A' or 'B', Agree or Disagree, True or False, Yes or No. This help is gaining quantitative and qualitative data.

From my research the majority of the age group who answered the most were 16-17 because I asked a Business Year 1 class.

How do you listen to music? - The majority of both sexes listen to music through their phone (20 per cent males and 25 per cent females). 20 per cent of males and 5 per cent of females enjoy listening to music through YouTube. 10 per cent of males and 5 per cent of the females stream their music through Spotify. 5 per cent of the females used SoundClound and Mp3 to listen to there music. What is your opinion on explicit language and the use of sexual images in music videos? And is explicit language necessary? - Most of my samples clearly stated that they dint not mind the explicit language as it a form of 'expression' and help the artist to 'express' themselves to their fans. But as a whole they all concluded that the sexual images in music video should have an age restriction and should be shown less.
What is your favourite song of ‘this year’? - Although 45 per cent of my sample didn’t not know what their favourite song from this year was. 55 per cent of them succeeded at answering the questionnaire. Why is music so influential or important to you? - 85 per cent of my sample listen to music for various different reasons, such as sentimental memories, helps them think and relax, its hot, lets them escape for a while, makes them feel better, its has become apart of their lifestyle, and it allows them to express them and they enjoy it.
Secondary research
Latest industry data estimates that the core music industry made an estimated economic contribution - also known as Gross Value Added or GVA - of about £4.1bn to the UK economy in 2014 and supporting 117,000 jobs. The music industry's growth of 5 per cent in 2014 outperformed the rest of the UK economy. The Market sectors within the music industry are digital music in figures, physical format sales, performance rate income, and synchronised income. The UK's current inflation rates is –1.5 which means that products prices such as music are lowed which makes it very convenient for consumer to purchase music.
British jobless rate decreased to 5.3 per cent in the three months to September of 2015, down from 5.4 per cent in the previous period and below market expectations. It is the lowest level since the three months to April of 2008 as the employment rate hit a fresh record high; the inactivity rate hit the lowest since 1991 while pay growth came in below expectations. The household rate is declining this is due to the low inflation rate. People over the age of 85 are now the fastest growing demographic group in the UK. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimates there are currently 1.5 million people in the UK over the age of 85; by 2050 this will have grown to 5 million.
From looking at the 'Bestselling British albums of 2015' its clear to see that the best selling British h albums are mostly POP, which is what most young people listen to. So influential artists are singers like, Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith, and with groups we've got One Direction and Coldplay.

From this source we see that the UK's Music industry has grown a lot from 2012 – 2014, and this has contributed to the UK's economy by billions of pounds. This chart tells us that music is very important to people.

From looking at the 'Global top selling albums of 2014' it clear to see that Frozen is the number one best selling album if 2014 asking 10 million sales, this is due its popularity and that’s it is favourable to every ages. This source also tells us that musical genres are very popular. We see that the UK's selling artist is also on the global top selling albums of 2014. This is evident that the UK economy is growing, as it’s well known and listened to.
From looking at global top digital singles of 2014, we see that Pharrell Williams single has made it with 13.9 million sales. In terms of digital sales, it seems that genres such as soul neo soul, and Hip Hop (Katy Perry – Dark Horse) are favourable to consumers. This helps with my primary research as more than 85 per cent of my samples favourite genres of music were hip hop.
Task 2 - Explain reasons for selecting the particular method of data collection for your product. (No more than 500 words)
I've chosen to use a non-profitable sampling methods simply because I am targeting young people on how music influences them. With using questionnaires as my main source of primary research means that I am able to find out the most popular music influences and trends of this year within my selected sampling frame, this means that I can make a clear judgment and even generalise whether or not music has an influence on young people today. The Gondola's Records Group has created questionnaires, which include 12 questions that are music related in order to find out how influential music is to the young people at City and Islington (CBAT).
The data I collected allowed me to make a conclusion on whether or not music influenced the young people, I was able to find out the young people at City and Islington (CBAT) didn’t necessarily find that music was influential but they dint all conclude that must was important to them for various reasons such as, it’s sentimental, helps the think and relax, its hot, let them escape foe a while, makes them feel better, its has become apart of their lifestyle, and it allows them to express them and they enjoy it.
I also chose to do questionnaires as I found that it was a highly suitable, quick and convenient method to use as it allowed me to clarify the question when asked. I also used the questionnaires because it is the cheapest method and City and Islington (CBAT) provided me with a printer, which was very helpful. Through the use of questionnaires, I was able to collect reliable data as each on of my sample felt very comfortable answering the questions and I a, confident to say that they answered the question very honestly, as they were giving the chance to stated their opinions in the opened questions. Another reason I chose to use a questionnaire in order find out if young people were influenced by music was because it has a quick response rate.
As my secondary source I chose to use the Internet and the ONS because its fit for purpose this is because it is used by the government to get facts and figures about numerous topics, therefore making it reliable for my research. Using the ONS and Internet is free and quick therefore convenient for to find out more about the influence music possible has on young people and to also find out information, such as the bestselling UK albums, bestselling worldwide digital singles, most popular genres and even the most listened to artist.
Strength and weaknesses
The strengths of using a questionnaire is that, they are very easy and quick to fill out, this was clearly an advantage for me because it mean that I didn’t have to deal with low response rates. Another strength was that I was able to gain both quantitative and qualitative data, which made my researcher more reliable, as all my samples were able to answer understand all the questions on the questionnaire.
On the over hand, the weaknesses of my questionnaire were that not all questions were answered, although understand maybe it was because they were interrupting the question differently. I found that not everyone of my sample wanted to answer the last question properly as I just got short answered answers rather then extended answers.
In order to improve this I would have to interact with my samples and simply explain and go over the questions in order to clarify any misunderstanding.
The strength of using both the ONS and the Internet is that its easy and quick to access when researching also it doesn’t cost anything, which is very convenient for my research. I was able to collect data from numerous sources, such as finding out the bestselling UK albums, the bestselling global digital singles and more.
The weaknesses of using both the Internet and the ONS is that the Internet can not fully be trusted as anyone can access and changed information, And with the ONS it was hard to find statistics of the current hear so I had to use the previous years information.
In order to overcome this I would have to use different types of secondary resources, such as using the library, reading articles, and reading book.
