...A TEACHER’S GUIDE TO THE SIGNET CLASSIC EDITION OF GEORGE ORWELL’S ANIMAL FARM By HAZEL K. DAVIS, Federal Hocking High School, Stewart, OH S E R I E S W. GEIGER ELLIS, ED.D., E D I T O R S : UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA, EMERITUS and ARTHEA J. S. REED, PH.D., UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA, RETIRED A Teacher’s Guide to the Signet Classic Edition of George Orwell’s Animal Farm 2 INTRODUCTION Animal Farm is an excellent selection for junior and senior high students to study. Although on one level the novel is an allegory of the 1917 Russian Revolution, the story is just as applicable to the latest rebellion against dictators around the world. Young people should be able to recognize similarities between the animal leaders and politicians today. The novel also demonstrates how language can be used to control minds. Since teenagers are the target not only of the educational system itself but also of advertising, the music industry, etc., they should be interested in exploring how language can control thought and behavior. Animal Farm is short and contains few words that will hamper the reader’s understanding. The incidents in the novel allow for much interactive learning, providing opportunities for students to dramatize certain portions, to expand on speeches, and to work out alternative endings. The novel can be taught collaboratively with the history department as an allegory of the Russian Revolution, allowing students to draw parallels...

...is by far the most interesting, challenging, frustrating, enjoyable, final I have ever experienced while attending college. I chose to do my project on Great Danes. Specifically, my Great Dane-Max. A short history of myself-I am originally from New Jersey. I am prior service Navy, and have lived on my own since the age of seventeen, and in Norfolk since 2007. My dog, Max, is my first dog of my own. He has been more than a pet for me, he has become my family. Moreover, no one in my family lives outside of New Jersey and New York, so it has always been just Max and I. In 2011, on the day after St. Patrick's day, Max suffered bloat. Bloat is a condition, where the stomach of the animal is twisted or flipped over. This causes circulation loss and the gases inside the stomach cannot escape. There are few symptoms to look-out for such as enlarged abdomen, heavy breathing, excessive salivating, and a lethargic demeanor. Bloat is a condition where time is working against the animal, and it could be only and hour or two before the animal dies. On the morning of that day in 2011, I went outside for a cigarette. My friend's dogs Bandit and Boozer (Pit-bull mix...

...Grievance Handling Assignment – Case Study By Lee Zahayko Student#0146832 August 29, 2015 Jessie is an animal lover that booked off 3 vacation days to attend to her 12-year-old dog that needed to be euthanized. When Jessie returned to work after the 3 vacation days she asked her employer to reinstate her 3 vacation days and instead treat her time off as family related leave in accordance with Article 30 of the MGEU collective agreement. Jessie’s employer denied the request stating that the intent of Article 30 related to human family members only – not pets. The question now is should Jessie be entitled to family related leave? In Article 30 of the MGEU collective agreement section a) states: “The leave shall be for the purpose of attending to family responsibilities which are real, immediate and unavoidable and which necessitate the employee’s absence from work.” An interpretation of Article 30, based on the section above, is that Jessie does have reasonable cause to ask for family related leave. Anyone who has owned a pet, or even knows of someone who owns a pet, knows that a pet is a responsibility. The animal needs: food, water, exercise, attention and shelter to survive. Those are the same things that a human needs as well. At the same time, an animal cannot provide those things for its self during any stage of its life, but a human grows, evolves and learns to provide for its self over time. In this case as well Jessie owned the dog for 12 years and obviously...

...1. In Text 1 (Jamie Doward, ‘’Police back new law on killer dogs’’), the author discusses a proposal to overturn the Dangerous Dog Act, holding pet owners responsible for any dangerous acts committed by their dogs, rather than focusing on a particular breed of dog as a means of dog control. In Text 2 (Victorie Stilwell, ‘’Jail owners of killer dogs”), the author also holds owners responsible for monitoring and carefully supervising their dogs at all times. The author strongly states that it is unfair to children as well as dogs to ever leave a dog unsupervised in the presence of children. In Text 3 (Simon Heffer, ‘’If the dog is dangerous, the owner will be, too”), the author also holds the human accountable for the actions of their dogs, but he is very negative and discriminatory about certain dog breeds as well as certain classes of people. The author states that certain breeds of dogs are prized by certain classes and types of people and that with aggressive dogs comes law-breaking people. 2. Simon Heffer, in his writing about dangerous dogs, is very critical of both the legislation regarding certain breeds as well as about their owners. It is obvious from his writing that Heffer has disdain towards people whom are impoverished, referring to them as “the underclass”. He is very negative towards certain breeds of dogs and stereotypes the people who own them. ‘’Pit bulls and their associated banned breeds are the chiens du choix of the criminal classes’’ This statement...

...world and their capital cities, and every prime number up to 7,057." He finds a neighbor's dog, named Wellington, murdered and decides to write about it. With the help of his teacher, Siobhan, he decides to write a book about his attempt to solve this mystery. It's a search for information that will ultimately upset his carefully constructed world. Christopher lives alone with his father after his mother died from a heart attack two years earlier. He never got to visit her at the hospital, but this doesn't bother him since he doesn't like strange places or people he doesn't know. If people touch him, he will hit them. If his senses become overloaded or his brain too confused, he will curl up in a ball and groan loudly, perhaps for hours at a time. Becoming angry with him just makes it worse. He hates the colors yellow and brown. His world needs order and precision. He will do math problems in his head for hours just to pass the time or distract him from an unpleasant situation. As he begins his investigation into Wellington's death, he assures us that everything he will tell us is true: I do not tell lies. Mother used to say that this was because I was a good person. But it is not because I am a good person. It is because Christopher's father is the most patient with him, even if his manner is gruff at times. He quickly forbids Christopher to ask anyone questions about Wellington's death and to promise to let the matter die, which Christopher does, within the specifics of his...

...Bus Law II Writing Assignment Due: September 18, 2014 NO. 3 This is the case of Joe vs. Sam. Joe was driving with his wife which, was in the passenger seat. Joe carelessly rear-ended Sam’s truck, shattering a taillight. Both Joe and Sam got out of the vehicles and Sam, who was incensed, approached Joe with his fists raised. He hit Joe’s dog instead of Joe. Joe was very emotionally distressed at having his dog hurt, and broke Sam’s nose. Sam pulled out a handgun and shot Joe. Sam would receive compensatory damages for Joe’s careless driving when he rear-ended Sam’s truck. Joe failed to exercise the standard of care that a reasonable person would exercise in similar circumstances by hitting the vehicle and breaking his nose. But at the same time, Joe would receive compensatory and punitive damages for Sam shooting Joe. Sam did unnecessary damage to Joe by shooting him. Sam committed assault even though he did not actually hit Joe. Sam created a reasonable fear of immediate harmful when his fists were raised in the air. In Sam’s defense, he could tell the court that he did not have Mens Rea to actually hit Joe sense he actually hit his dog instead. When Sam hit Joe’s dog it made Joe become very emotionally distressed, which is the tort of infliction of emotional distress. Joe committed assault and battery when he broke Sam’s nose. Since Sam hit his dog, he could say that he was protecting his family. There are probably a few juries that allow protecting your pet a family...

...LS-03 Introduction to Law and the Legal Profession Unit 6: Criminal Law: Summary What constitutes discipline? What constitutes abuse? Different cultures – different cultural connotations – difficult to universalize Punishment in Schools: 31 states do not allow corporal punishment in schools; southern states allow teachers to discipline children. Now there is a tremendous emphasis in our culture on abuse/neglect of children. Death Penalty: there are many cases where people are exonerated after many years. At least they can get out and have freedom. They got rid of Apartheid – people who took a stand, i.e. Rosa Parks and Nelson Mandela “committed” civil disobedience – yet were the catalyst for new/better laws to evolve. Bullies in school is a problem – if teachers hit a child, it adds to corporal punishment. Does corporal punishment in schools have a positive affect? The evidence shows that countries an states that do not have a death penalty – murder rates are lower. Criminologists believe that having a death penalty in place – creates a cycle of violence. Are the shootings in the schools a result of corporal punishment? We must look at Colorado to explore this question. Identifying Criminal Law: Elements of a Crime – criminal law is straight forward. Every crime has 3 elements: GUILTY MIND: to punish intentionally wrong conduct OJ Simpson case – he was charged with murdering his wife and waiter on Goldman. The prosecutor had the burden of proof. OJs attorneys...

...coupled with the gloomy thought of be hexed with the “mummy’s curse” when you think of the day King Tutankhamen, “King Tut”, and his ancient tomb where uncovered November 26, 1922. In Ancient Egypt, pyramids were built from the Old Kingdom to the Middle Kingdom to house the bodies of their mummified queens and pharaohs; along with gold, food, and treasures. These tombs at times where plugged with large pieces of granite to block entry, disguised to throw off grave robbers, masked with secret passageways, and supposedly cursed to bring death to those who entered. King Tut’s tomb was believed to be cursed when its financer, Lord Carnarvon, died two months after the opening of the tomb, along with his dog howling to the moon and falling immediately dead right after. One claim on museum.org (1997-2012) says chief archeologist, Howard Carter, hid a tablet with the curse inscribed on it, while it also is recorded that the fatal curse "death will come on swift pinions to those who disturb the rest of the Pharaoh" (Dowdey, 2014) to be on the outside of tomb door – so it seems it is really up to the believer to formulate your own opinion on the curse, and where it began. All of the mystery and skepticism leads curious minds to attempt to find the truth, and “in 1999 a German microbiologist, Gotthard Kramer, from the University of Leipzig, analyzed 40 mummies and identified several potentially dangerous mold spores on each. Mold spores are tough and can survive thousands of...

...topics and ideas I will be speaking about. In addition I will provide real life examples of why granting animals too many rights is harmful to both animals and humans. To do this I will first go over and analyze the arguments laid out by Carl Cohen who is opposed to animal rights. I will then discuss the arguments presented by Tom Regan. After this I will present my own opinion based on their arguments and the writings of others. Animal rights is the idea that some or all nonhuman animals are entitled to the possession of their own lives, and that their most basic interests – such as an interest in not suffering – should be afforded the same consideration as the similar interests of human beings. Advocatess, such as Peter Singer oppose the assignment of moral value and fundamental protections on the basis of species membership alone – an idea known as speciesism. Peter singer argues that speciesism is a prejudice similar to racism or sexism, in that the treatment of individuals is predicated on group membership and morally irrelevant physical differences. The argument is that species membership has no moral significance.[2] Tom Regan In The Case for Animal Rights, argues that non-human animals bear moral rights. Regan points out that we routinely ascribe inherent value, and thus the right to be treated...
