...Fallon Cooper Gower GEN/200 April 30, 2012 University of Phoenix Personal Responsibility and College Personal responsibility varies for each individual, but for me it encompasses all areas of my life. It determines how I choose to live my life via my moral compass. Education and personal responsibility are two aspects that can sometimes be hard for people to take control of. It is much easier to point a finger when things do not go as planned, such as failing a test or turning an assignment in late. In order for students to be successful in college, they must practice personal responsibility by holding accountability for their actions, identifying educational goals, and using time management skills effectively. I have made mistakes in my college career, and I do not always blame who I should. Sometimes, I would much rather blame the teacher for failing a test or not agreeing with my grades when either turning my assignments late or not turning them in at all. The truth is that I should hold myself accountable for my actions. It was up to me to get the work done and to turn in the assignments. It is also my personal responsibility to study for the tests and to put in the correct amount of time each week in order to pass the course. I appreciate the teachers that do not give in the rules that they have made, and those who hold us students to our lack of responsibility. Learning includes making mistakes, but if we do not learn from our mistakes then that is solely our fault...

I began making eye contact with the older gentleman (Chuck), and whether he noticed the constant stares from me or not, he began to take initiative and lead the group. Prior to taking a class in organizational behavior, I would have just brushed my behavior off and not extracted any useful lessons from the hula-hoop example. As I study organizational behavior, I thought about the hula-hoop example on a daily basis. How do I identify myself in a group environment? What Did You Learn About Yourself? In my intermediate accounting class (ACCTG 620), we are required to work in groups of four to complete in-class assignments. These assignments typically take up the majority of the class time, and are always challenging. Within my group, I unknowingly became the leader of the group. During our third in-class assignment, my group had a question that needed to be clarified by the professor. I was only made aware that I was elected as the unofficial leader when my fellow group member,...

...Running head: SEMINAR ALTERNATIVE ASSIGNMENT – UNIT 1 Seminar Alternative Assignment – Unit 1 Kaplan University MT302: Organizational Behavior SEMINAR ALTERNATIVE ASSIGNMENT – UNIT 1 1 What do managers do? “Managers get things done through other people,” (Robbins & Judge, pg. 5). This might seem like an extremely simple definition of a manager’s responsibilities, but it is the truth. There are many methods and ways in which a manager can develop their administrative and people skills. By using systematic study, utilizing the POLC and organizational behavior (OB) models, defining management roles, understanding OB challenges and opportunities, and assessing management skills and managerial activities, a manager can empower and motivate their employees, stimulate innovation, and improve customer service, while creating a healthy work environment. What is organizational behavior? Organizational Behavior is a “field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within organizations, for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organization’s effectiveness.” In other words, it is “the study of what people do in an organization and how their behavior affects the organization’s performance,” (Robbins & Judge, pg. 10). The outline will describe the four major roles of managers, the functions of responsibility, the need for specific roles of management in healthcare, and the outcome of understanding how these ideals will enable me as a student, to transition into an effective leader in the healthcare setting. Managerial Roles The roles of managers and workers are clearly defined, not only by job description work performed, but also in salary. Managers in health care have multiple roles and responsibilities and encompass different disciplines. Managers need to be aware of the fact that this is their job, to supervise and guide workers in their duties, as well as to observe report and supplement what the workers are being tasked. One of the biggest mistakes that mangers make, is that they try to be liked. This is where poor leadership begins. A manger must remember that they are there to manage, not be popular. A manger will gain the respect of the workers by being there, doing their job properly, and not trying win their respect by being liked. ...and Functions of a Health Care Manager Schniqua Bennett HCS 325 April 23, 2012 Instructor: Vivian Perez Health care managers and administrators are increasingly assuming leadership and management responsibilities for multiple units and departments (Purnell, 1999). Managers on various levels in a health care organization, spend a significant amount of time on communicating, problem solving, decision making, collaboration with others internally or externally, people development, and cost containment. Managers perform these various tasks listed above through a process called management. The process of management consists of four cycles: organizing, planning, controlling the use of resources, and leading to accomplish performance goals (Lombardi, Schermerhorn, & Kramer, 2007). The most important role a health care manager has cannot be limited to just one function because each function is equally of importance. But for this assignment, I would say a valuable function of a manager is leadership. In leading employees, a manager must have the ability, knowledge, and skills to take charge and lead the organization in the way it should be ran to accomplish the organizations goals. A leader/manager must be able to build up his or her employees’ enthusiasm to work hard to fulfill plans and accomplish objectives (Lombardi, Schermerhorn, & Kramer, 2007). A manager must be able to work as a team alongside his or her subordinates, as well direct at the same time. Teamwork...

...have to most people come and participate. We decided to make Kathryn the leader since she was really the one that took charge in the first place to line up a place for us to go to complete the volunteer work. She called around and was able to get one of the nursing homes to agree to let us come there. Management functions The four primary leadership functions are: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Planning involves deciding where to take a group and selecting steps to get there (Norman, 2016). Kathryn displayed planning when she took charge of what organization we were going to volunteer for. Leaders organize by bringing together physical, human and financial resources to achieve objectives (Norman, 2016). Kathryn displayed organization when she called Devlin Manor to set up a reasonable time slot that the group could attend by relaying this message to the rest of the group members. Leading requires managers to motivate employees to achieve business objectives and goals (Norman, 2016). Kathryn displayed the leading portion of the leadership function when we got to Devlin Manor. When we arrived, Kathryn got us checked in and positioned us to where she thought would be the best spot in the room to achieve the goal. Controlling is a function of management that involves measuring achievement against established objectives and goals (Norman, 2016). Kathryn at the end of each round of bingo, would assess the situation to make sure all the elderly people were taken care...

...in a health care setting are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Leading involves implementing the plans and helping employees work effectively toward accomplishing the organizational goals. The first major function of management in a health care setting is to plan. In order for anything to be accomplished, a plan must be put into place. Planning helps a health care manger and other employees stay organized. Part of the role of being a health care manager is knowing how to plan out goals effectively. Planning is utilized to enhance the role of a health care manager because it helps to identify goals clearly (Agriculture and Rural Development, 2001). When goals are planned effectively, the amount of time needed and effort that is used for achieving those goals would be reduced. The second major function of management in a health care setting is organization. Being organized helps a health care manager stay on track with day to day goals. In a health care environment, organization includes arranging tasks, people, and other resources that would assist with accomplishing the work (Lombardi, Schermerhorn, & Kramer, 2007). A health care manager must be able to construct plans build from their organizational skills.
