...A New Work Ethic Seok Gil Hong Business Ethics - Business 309 Professor Mahari Belay April 29, 2012 Abstract This case study was about the evidenced work ethic of young people who are working in a fast food restaurant. A human resource manager, James Sheehy, goes undercover to work in the restaurant in order to observe the organizational culture and environment of the restaurant. What is discovered is that the employees have little regard or respect for the work, the employer, the customers or the product. This report will answer the five questions posed in the assignment. Describe how typical the attitudes that Sheehy reports appear to be in work environments you have experienced. The typical attitudes that Sheehy identified were disrespectful and poor in nature. The employees had a very poor attitude about the work and one another. The employees did not seem to realistically care about their attitudes or their performance. They showed great disrespect for the work place, the business, the customers and their employer. This is very similar to the attitudes that I have seen in some of the places that I have worked. I once worked in a dollar store that employed a lot of high school students and this article exemplified their behavior very well. The employees felt that this was not a real job and they did not...

The Application of Equity Theory in Business Today

...The Application of Equity Theory in Business Today Research Paper Marcy Adams Organizational Behavior and Theory, Bus 7000 Professor Bryan Forsythe October 15, 2012 “That’s why you get paid the big bucks!” A phrase often head in all levels of management may actually hold theoretical meaning as opposed to what was often thought as simply an excuse to get out of performing a task. Unfortunately, implications of such could be the demonstration of a much deeper feeling in inequity that could ultimately damage the motivation of an entire organization. As defined, an organization is a collection of people who work together to achieve a variety of goals (Understanding & Managing Organizational Behavior, p 1). Organizational behavior is the actions and attitudes of those people within the organization (Understanding & Managing Organizational Behavior, p 1). The attitude of an individual determines the job satisfaction or dissatisfaction, commitment to the organization and overall involvement. Attitude can be influenced by internal factors, external factors and perception. First developed by John Stacey Adams in 1963, Equity theory attempts to explain the relationship between how fairness and unfairness correspond to a persons satisfaction. It asserts that employees seek a need to maintain balance between their inputs and outputs, all in comparison to that of a “referent” other (McShane & Von Gilnow p.151)...

Ob Case Study

...selective case study reveals a work environment at the Wilson Construction Company with a discussion between an employee and his supervisor. The employee, Walt Henderson, works at WCC as a drafting technician. He has brought his personal project from home to work on during assigned work hours. His supervisor, a man, named Ken, feels that this sets a poor precedent for the other employees and reminds him that his actions are inappropriate. Walt counters this by commenting that he has not only already finished his assigned work, but also worked while home to finish other company materials. He feels that this should entitle him personal time at work since he gave up time at home for company work. This case study is an excellent example of how attitudes, mainly Walt’s toward his use of time, play an important part in actions, feelings, and behavior in the workplace. Attitudes at work, such as Walt’s about his use of company time both at home and at work, are evaluative statements about objects, people, or events in the workplace. In this paper, I will evaluate the situation at work concerning Walts attitude related to work, his boss, and his time spent at home and work. I will also evaluate Walt’s discourse in order to try to predict his future behavior at work. In conclusion, I will suggest alternative ways on how Walt’s supervisor, Ken, should handle the manner in which Walt’s attitude affects his performance at work. Walt’s attitude towards work is mainly negative, especially...

Sheehy’s reports on the attitudes of his fellow employees, is very typical of young adults today it seems. When Sheehy reported a whole generation of workers with a frightening new work ethic of contempt for customers, indifference to quality and service, and a get-away-with-what-you-can attitude depicts how the work ethics of our youth is today. (Shaw, 2010) It is very apparent when you go to fast food chains, department clothing stores, and sometimes in the grocery store. I have not experienced this type of behavior in my own work environments personally. I have been fortunate not to work in the medical field and insurance most of my professional career and have not seen these types of attitudes or behavior described by Sheehy. The generation I have worked with has usually been older than me. However, I have seen these types of attitudes in my day to day life when I go to fast food restaurants or go shopping in stores at the malls. The sales associates who are young high school or college students don’t show any type of professional work ethics in certain stores. They don’t greet you or ask if you need help in some department stores I have been to. 2. Explain the implications of the work ethic Sheehy describes for the future of American business.
