If you ask three people, 9 times out of ten, you'll get these three answers: 1) It’s the TV, 2) It’s peer pressure, or 3) It’s their environment. I beg to differ. All three answers are constituents as to why the homicide rate is at an all time high amongst the youth! However, I blame the parents! You have children who know lyrics to Chief Keef songs, word for word, but they don’t know their government name; you have 14 year olds who can tell you everything that happened on the Bad Girls Club, or any reality TV show but they don’t who the hell Emmett Till or Anne Frank (two iconic 14 year olds in American history) is; you have parents who are so quick to buy their children the latest designer shoes or clothes, yet these are the same children who can’t excel in school to save their life! Parents, we are our children’s first teachers. The training starts at home. If you wait for your child to start school to start trying to teach them the basics like counting, ABC’s, and how to write their name, they’ll already be behind. If you are solely depending on the educational system to teach your child anything, they have already failed! When they are two years old, they should be engaging in activities that consist of learning colors, numbers, or alphabets. I don’t see that! ...In the essay “Out-of-Body Image” by Caroline Heldman, Heldman illustrates the strain on the relationship between a woman and her body caused by the manipulation in the media. Early on in the essay, Heldman makes it clear that the media has an issue sexualizing women and she does it through tone and the words she chooses. In the introduction of the essay she discusses the typical body figures people see in advertisements; they are “impossibly slim (and digitally airbrushed).” The words impossible and digitally suggest this sense of fabrication and falseness, a perception that cannot be reciprocated by a typical woman. She continues by suggesting that the depictions of women in the media is poisonous and highlights just how bad the impact of the media is, that it is comparable to poison and is harming not only women but young girls who view these advertisements as well. Heldman also demonstrates the direct effects the “poison” has, she mentions that self-objectification leads to eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.
